Young grandmother names!

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:16

My 21 year old dd is making me a grandma just in time for my 40th birthday!
I'm happy to be nana (because Janice in Benidorm is my grandparent goal but my dd says she'll call the baby Coolio if I go for that) .
Does anyone go by anything less conventional than nan, granny etc?
I'm a bit excited!

Someone I know is called 'Glam-ma' or another is called 'Nanni-ma' - which I've always thought is sweet.

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:27

She said glamma Grin its a no from me!
Nannima is cute

What’s wrong with the usual names?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 04/02/2019 08:34

Lots of the children near me call their grandma 'Mamar'. It's a regional thing but sounds very cute when spoken by a small person. I have also hear MeMaw but personally I think that it sounds very American.

MollyHuaCha · 04/02/2019 08:37

I would say stick with usual names - Gran, Granny, Nan, Nanny, Nana.

I called one of my grandparents a cute name. When I got to age 7-8 I felt really self conscious about it and wished they'd just been called a proper grandparent name.

LittleLongDog · 04/02/2019 08:38

What’s wrong with nana?

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:39

Nothing my daughter just likes being a bit different! I'm gonna refer to myself as nana and it'll stick I reckon, may wanted to hear what people used!!

Several women in my family were grandmas at 40. Most of them are Nanas and one was Granny, which seemed odd to me as I see granny as old and this person is very young in her outlook.

Interested to hear any other suggestions though.

Spacebat · 04/02/2019 08:47

I know a grandmother who is called Shanna - a combo of her first name, Sheila, and nana.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 04/02/2019 08:49

I saw this on one of my son’s tv shows ( boss baby!)
The grandmother was called GG ( Gigi) I thought that was cool.
You’re way too young to be nana. You’re eight years younger than me! Grin

Congrats on the impending grandchild btw!

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:50

Well my side of the family are all grannies, my mum being the only grandma and that's cos that's what dd called her (first grandchild and it stuck with all 6 that my sister and I blessed her with).
But dd's dads side of the family are all nannies.... She doesn't especially like either!
I've never had a nana but I'm definitely warming to it...

If you want to be Nana, be Nana. Or wait until the child is old enough to babble something vaguely geandparenty at you Grin. My mid-40s mother opted for Nana, and it suits her.

If your daughter wants to be a bit different, that's on her, and she can surely have an alternative to Mummy for herself to do that?

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:51

GG is an excellent name and (very outing) fits the family name nicely

I am Granmouse to my stepdgc and Grandma to dgc as the former already have Grandma and Nana. My dgc have Granny as well as Grandma (me) and Nana. Oddly, all the male grandparents are Grandad sometimes with a first name tagged on but not always.

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 08:52

Aww no this is only light hearted, of course she's gonna be mummy!

my granddaughter calls me Enay Enay(Nana spelled out!)

ChickenCrimpy · 04/02/2019 08:54

I know a G-ma, shortened to Gee. If GG doesn't float your DD's boat.

My nan was a Nana, never Nanna. She was much older than you, but especially flamboyant in all aspects of life.

thegreylady · 04/02/2019 08:54

As a child my maternal grandmother was known as Mother and her mother was Mother D(surname).
How about the Swedish Mormor.

ChocolateChipMuffin2016 · 04/02/2019 08:55

My DS has Nana and Nanny, GG was my Great Grandma's name when I was a kid (she was in her 90's!).
My FIL wanted DS to call him G-Daddy or G-dog, that did not happen! He is Granddad Grin

x2boys · 04/02/2019 08:56

I used I work with so!one from the Philippines her Grand children called her Lola , which I believe is the term for Grandma , Granny etc in the Philippines ?

masktaster · 04/02/2019 08:57

Aww no this is only light hearted, of course she's gonna be mummy!

I know a few parents (of all ages) who go by Mama or their first name (more divisive, I know), I wasn't atracking. I'm a Mam(my), but that's regional, not to be different Grin

masktaster · 04/02/2019 08:58

*attacking

sdaisy26 · 04/02/2019 08:59

See my granny was very young so it’s not an old name to me.

I also had a grandparent with a less usual name and it was a pain explaining it. Likewise my dc - fil chose something of significance to the cultural heritage of his first grandchild, it’s hard for the rest of them to explain it though.

Subeccoo · 04/02/2019 09:02

Masktaster as I wrote that I thought I bet my dd will be mama actually, it'll suit her!
My kids call my mum gma as they've all got to adult hood, it's stuck with them.

Im not sure what I’d want to be called (hopefully won’t have that problem for a while yet!)

I know I could ever be called a nanny as to me that’s a job or a goat. My neices and nephews call my mil nanny it just sounds wrong to me.
