to get rid of cleaner because she won't accept a bank transfer?

She's really nice, I like her, does a decent job, but she always wants cast and charges £17.50 each time she's here. I have a 3 month old and am very disorganised/exhausted. I almost always forget to get money out for her and end up having to make an early morning trip to the shops (which are miles away as I'm rural). She's through an agency so pays taxes and isn't tax dodging, but just won't accept me putting money in her account. She wants cash. That's fair enough but it's a PITA for very disorganised me... would it be harsh to get rid of her and hire someone else for this reason alone?

@Bluelady I have ended up doing that a few times to be fair.

You could go to the bank once a month and ask for the money in the right change ? Get £5 in 50ps so much in £1 coins etc and do that at the start of each month or when you go into town ?

crispysausagerolls · 03/02/2019 21:44

The agency models are shocking btw - cleaner gets next to nothing. It’s also a very annoying amount of money! We had the same situation but cleaner ended up working for us directly for more money, cutting out the agency. Still pay cash but much easier amounts!

Laiste · 03/02/2019 21:44

I'd just give her the 20 too.

Or ask her for the change.

gamerchick · 03/02/2019 21:45

Tbh I would bin you off, you being disorganised isn't really her problem imo. If she can dictate then she's probably good at her job and decent cleaners aren't ten a penny.

Yes cleaners are there to make life easier bit I think people forget that they aren't just doing them a favour so they should bend to every will.

changers5 · 03/02/2019 21:45

@gamerchick bin me off for what?

OP posts:
gamerchick · 03/02/2019 21:47

Keep asking to pay another way when it's already been no.

MaHeidsGouping · 03/02/2019 21:47

I'm a cleaner and have moved all my clients (apart from pensioners) over to paying me thru the bank. Tbh I now have people paying late/early/not at all until I send I text reminding them. I wouldn't go back to cash but it was definitely easier picking up money at the end of the clean rather than checking my account often to see I haven't been paid yet.

TotHappy · 03/02/2019 21:47

I don't think anyone has a 'right' to be paid in cash do they? My employer wouldn't pay me in cash. I wasn't given the option. Most won't. I mean, she can ask, but you have no obligation

Fantasisa · 03/02/2019 21:47

It will be easier to get cash out than find another cleaner you like. I would get the money out in advance and bundle it up. Set a reminder on your phone! Ps. I do agree that cash is a pain - I rarely have it when I need it.

Laiste · 03/02/2019 21:47

I used to do house cleaning and wouldn't have accepted a client who wasn't prepared to pay cash.

I was able to be picky about who i worked for as decent cleaners are like hens teeth.

changers5 · 03/02/2019 21:49

@gamerchick I asked her on her first shift how she wanted to be paid and she said it has to be weekly, and has to be cash. You'd turn me down as a client for that?

OP posts:
luckylavender · 03/02/2019 21:49

I can't believe you'd lose a good cleaner over that. It seems a reasonable request. You need to get organised.

cowfacemonkey · 03/02/2019 21:50

That would annoy me too and I couldn’t be arsed with the extra faff.

Colorbomb · 03/02/2019 21:51

If your area is full of cleaners who will drive to a rural location for 8.75 an hour paid by bank transfer then by all means. Personally I think you’d be crazy as you may struggle to replace her.
I agree I’d round up to £20 and keep a stash in an envelope.

changers5 · 03/02/2019 21:51

@luckylavender it's not going to happen. I'm so disorganised. It's awful but it's just the way I am.

She's a good cleaner. Not amazing. Decent though. I've had a couple of other cleaners when I lived in different parts of the country and they were on par. Didn't realise it was hard to find a good cleaner! Will keep that in mind.

OP posts:
changers5 · 03/02/2019 21:52

@Colorbomb she works for an agency who has a few cleaners near me who take bank transfer at exactly the same rate... I'm just undecided as I feel mean. It just does my head in!

AlexaAmbidextra · 03/02/2019 21:53

Maybe her bank account is constantly overdrawn and any payment into it would be immediately swallowed up?

londonrach · 03/02/2019 21:53

Yabu. Cash is king. The double is checking your bank account now due to the fact the banks are all closing. Not everyone does internet banking. Just get cash back when you can and put it away. You said she s nice etc so why change to another who may not work for you. My parents pay cash to their cleaner (again not to avoid tax but because cleaner knows shes been paid). I think it be rare to find a cleaner that does accept bank transfer

ColdCottage · 03/02/2019 21:54

It would annoy me too but if she is good - and clearly VERY cheap (£45 here for 3h) the hold on to her.

Go to the bank and get 5 x £17.50 to put in envelopes and then set a alarm to get another 5 lots in a month so you have a buffer. A pain but worth it if she is good.

BIgBagofJelly · 03/02/2019 21:54

I'd just give her £20 a week or pay her in advance for 4 weeks at a time so it's an even number.

MarshaBradyo · 03/02/2019 21:54

Such a low rate

I’d round up to £10 ph too

Belenus · 03/02/2019 21:54

Ask her if she'd accept £15 one week and £20 the next, then at least you're not messing around with 50p pieces. I'd use it as a way to be more organised rather than risk not finding another cleaner.

changers5 · 03/02/2019 21:54

Maybe @AlexaAmbidextra - I don't think I'm going to get rid. I think I'm going I'm to start giving her £20. I feel too bad...

Fairylightfurore · 03/02/2019 21:54

What a pain. Not unreasonable at all. I pay most things online, it's a massive chore to have to get cash. School are the only place who won't accept online payment which is really behind the times but I can't really stop them going just for that Wink. A cleaner on the other hand....just get another and make it clear you can only do bank transfers.
