To have similar 'patterned' names for kids.

So, I'm heavily pregnant with my second child and DH and I have hated all name choices that the other has liked until this one name... but I'm worried that it's too 'similar' to our firstborns because it has the same pattern of vowels and consonants, I.e. Ava and Eli.

Am I mad? Will anyone else notice and care?

We probably won't have a third so we won't have to worry about 'fitting' the inadvertent pattern or it being odd when the next is Alexandria or something.

It's fine.
It would be odd if the names were very similiar like say Ivy and Ivo, or wildly dissimilar like Jack and Aurelia-Isabella or something.

RavenWings · 03/02/2019 15:05

Unless they rhyme, are after famous people (Charlotte, Louis and George) or are themed (Hazel, Daisy and Rose) you're probably ok.

HairyToity · 03/02/2019 15:39

No one will think twice, even if its Ivy and Ivo.

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2019 15:41

I think it's fine.

PositiveVibez · 03/02/2019 15:44

I have a friend who's dc's (one boy one girl) have kind of matchy matchy names and it is very cute.

Both have lovely names individually and doesn't sound twee or precious/prissy

MorelloKisses · 03/02/2019 15:44

I disagree slightly. I do have a friend who has 2 girls and I (and everyone else I know) confuses their names as the ‘pattern’ is very similar. Even when she told me the 2nd ones name, my brain thought ‘no, that’s the name of the first, oh no hang in, it isnt’

It’s hard to really describe it, but it really is confusing everyone and the 2nd child is nearly 2.

The names aren’t short, don’t rhythm, and do t start with the same letter, they are just the same ‘pattern’

Bestseller · 03/02/2019 15:46

I know an (elderly) brother and sister called Gywn and Gwen.

On the basis that many of the posts here are about find a sibling name that goes with the pfb name, I don't think you need to worry.

Mumofonetwothree · 03/02/2019 15:51

The only thing that matters is you like the name.
I looked after siblings eve and heath once.

Jimdandy · 03/02/2019 15:52

Someone I know has a son called Charlie with 4 kids in the middle and just had another and called it Harley.

That’s stupid!

Names that “go” together like Chloe and Sophie are ok though.

Bloo22 · 03/02/2019 15:53

As long as you like the name it’s all that matters, I know siblings Ellie and Elsie, there’s only one letter difference and nobody bats an eyelid

BendingSpoons · 03/02/2019 15:55

I know an Evie and Archie. I feel these are a nice pair and work well together. I think you will be fine.

Sarahandduck18 · 03/02/2019 15:56

I don’t see the connection between Ava and Eli!

CookPassBabtridge · 03/02/2019 15:57

We have two "ie" names as we loved the pattern. Ava and Eli sound great, they are still different names.

goldengummybear · 03/02/2019 15:57

Ava and Eli are fine. Evan and Eva is too similar. Avoid famous combinations eg Catherine and William or rhyming ones Joe and Flo then you're fine. Would probably avoid matching all of my kids with the letter K so there's no Kardashian comments too.

mistermagpie · 03/02/2019 16:13

I know what you mean, I have a Magnus and DH wanted DS2 to be Fergus but I just felt they were too similar. There is a celeb (ish) from I think the Saturdays who has Carter and Parker and I think they are two close sounding. Ditto the Rooney's kids.

Ava and Eli are fine though, they don't share any letters and don't rhyme so they seem very different.

Jeanclaudejackety · 03/02/2019 16:17

The Rooneys have Kit, Kai, Clay and Cass and I don't think although people on here hate them, that it sounds weird, they're nice names. I don't think people mind massively. Some people do all biblical names, I know families with a Tom, Ben and Kate, aBeth and Eve and a Joe and Josh.

MoaningSickness · 03/02/2019 17:11

No one will think twice, even if its Ivy and Ivo.

See, I would if I met siblings with those names! I'd never say anything, but I'd think it an odd choice. (And also wonder how many times a day the parents called the wrong name by mistake!)

OP posts:
EnglishRose13 · 03/02/2019 17:41

I know of twins called Isobel and Bella. Far too similar!

DonutCone · 03/02/2019 17:44

Just remember they are children for a short time. As an adult you will never introduce yourself as ‘Ava with a brother called Ivo’, they will be totally separate people with totally separate lives. If you like the names I cannot understand why people worry about whether they ‘go’ with their siblings names.

genome · 03/02/2019 17:46

My three children all end in the same sound. It was a coincidence with the first two names and when we had our third I also liked a name ending in the same sound and it just sounded right. I sometimes call them by the wrong name, but tbh three kids in 4 years have ruined my brain so I don't think it's anything to do with the same sound Grin

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 03/02/2019 17:47

I know a big family who all have names that start with the same letter, I think there are five siblings altogether, and it's so matchy that it works iyswim. I think if they are too similar-sounding then people might call them the wrong thing, but if that doesn't bother you it's really up to you. I wouldn't count vowels or notice letters or things like that because more often than not someone tells me their baby's name first and I wouldn't think to write them down on paper and then compare consonants with siblings' names before judging the parents for their choices... I think you're overthinking a bit. Have the name you like!

DorothyZbornak · 03/02/2019 17:47

I used to work with a guy called Gary. His brother's name was Barry. Not twins. There was a couple of years between them. It was definitely odd.

FlibbertyGiblets · 03/02/2019 17:49

Paisley and Argyle.

Soubriquet · 03/02/2019 17:50

Some names are lovely together even matchy wise.

Just don’t name them Neil and Deneil like I knew (two brothers) and you’re fine

bakebakebake · 03/02/2019 19:06

Ava and Eli sound fine to me!

My kids go to school with sisters called Emily and Everly. I thought they were mistaken when they first told me!
