Me, Myself and I

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that posters are suddenly referring to themselves as myself rather than me or I?

Myself and my partner were going out...

They gave it to myself and dd...

I don’t know why it enrages me so.

*it gets me

I complained about the 'cat needed fed' example on here and it was pointed out to my that is is the way that people in certain areas (Some places in Scotland iirc) say that sentence and consider it correct.

What really gets on myself's nerves lately is the dropping of the word 'to' e.g. I'm going town. We went hospital. Grrrrrr!

SayNoToCarrots · 05/02/2019 07:02

Harking back a bit, but my partner and me can be correct. For example, "will you support my partner and me?". You couldn't say " will you support I?"

This is very common amongst my dcs and their friends.

Another common thing they all seem to say is, 'yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah' really quickly when agreeing with each other. I was on a train yesterday next to a group of young men who were all saying this so it must be fairly widespread. Not grammatically horrendous I suppose but mildly irritating!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, so, catself, he doesn't care who does it. Me, myself, I, yourself, himself, or herself, as long as he actually gets fedded.

His wise feline point is, what really matters, is whether your communication can be understood, and if necessary acted upon.

As far as we are aware, he is not Scottish or Irish, although it is fair to say that English is not his first language.

Just responding in fun to several pps, tin.

I love Catself Grin

In Ireland, the difference when people say 'myself' or 'yourself' is it's more of a comfortable and familiar way of speaking, more of a colloquialism. It's not about trying to sound more formal there, imo.

Upsy1981 · 05/02/2019 16:31

Yes definitely the missing 'to' seems to mainly be among the yoof. I refuse to listen yo my DD if she says it to me, although I'm sure she says it amongst her friends.

And stuff like 'because friends' 'because life'

BECAUSE WHAT ABOUT THEM?!

We also get a lot of "going out, but not out out" courtesy of Micky Flanagan 🙄

BBInGinDrinking · 05/02/2019 22:23

What really gets myself's goat is 'knock the door'. It's knock on the door.

BBInGinDrinking · 05/02/2019 22:32

I would never be rude and correct someone on here, (I've never heard it IRL), but when I see it, inside myself is seething. Grin
