Me, Myself and I

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that posters are suddenly referring to themselves as myself rather than me or I?

Myself and my partner were going out...

They gave it to myself and dd...

I don’t know why it enrages me so.

It makes me want to hit them over the head repeatedly with the biggest, thickest, heaviest dictionary I can find.

I thought this was going to be a thread about the rediscovery of the wondrous De La Soul...

SilverySurfer · 02/02/2019 10:45

I hate it too and it comes second to could/should/would OF. I've also noticed the use of the wrong tense of some verbs is increasing. They all make it sound like the language is being strangled.

longwayoff · 02/02/2019 10:58

Saying Me is rude? Impolite? But sounding like someone who can't speak their own language correctly is better? All Irish people are excepted from this by the way, you have your own version of English, I'd miss hearing 'is it yourself?' etc.

iklboo · 02/02/2019 11:05

You think that's bad? My boss said the other week 'Can you go to the meeting instead of myself hence because you have a paper to present?'

longwayoff · 02/02/2019 13:27

Sympathy iklboo, I've had similar employers. Worst is when they write something down and you have to resist the urge to correct it and send their semi-literate musings to a prospective customer. One rang up and said to me he'd received a letter from my employer and it was utter gibberish. Ah, the joys of temping.

This drives me potty, agree with pp's who suggest it is a futile attempt to sound more intelligent and therefore authoritative. I just think to myself "Oh, go fuck YOURSELF, Tina..."

LaurieMarlow · 02/02/2019 13:35

It's always been very common in Ireland. 'Yourself' is also widely used.

I asked my boss the other day who was needed at a particular work event and his answer was 'Elaine, myself and yourself'. Grin

Spot on - watching a police tv programme, you often hear 'I must ask you to accompany myself to the station.' The PC obviously thinks this makes him sound authoritative but it makes him sound ridiculous. If I was arrested in RL I would not be able to stop myself laughing Grin

YouTheCat · 02/02/2019 13:58

I know someone who does this. They are, generally, an irritating twat anyway and this just adds to it. This one does it to sound clever but it has the opposite effect.

Bluelady · 02/02/2019 14:00

Hate it. Pretentious twaddle. It also grates when people say "Me and my partner", no it's "My partner and I" ffs.

reallybadidea · 02/02/2019 14:09

My boss once asked me to read an email before he sent it to check whether it made sense. It did, but I pointed out that asking people to "see myself if you have any questions" was appalling grammar. He took notice of myself and no longer does it, which is a massive win as far as I'm concerned Grin

Not always. For example - who is going on holiday? Me and my partner.

YouTheCat · 02/02/2019 14:27

Wouldn't that still be 'my partner and I' though?

tinstar · 02/02/2019 14:28

Well it's polite to put yourself last so:

"Who's going on holiday?"
"My partner and I"

PenCreed · 02/02/2019 14:31

No! It would only be “my partner and I” if there was also a verb. Otherwise it’s “my partner and me”.

PenCreed · 02/02/2019 14:32

(Sorry for emphatic “no”, it’s a bugbear of mine)

PeroniZuchini · 02/02/2019 14:32

I hate it. Estate agent speech.

ScreamingValenta · 02/02/2019 14:33

Take the 'my partner' out of the sentence to find out which is correct.

She gave it to me/she gave it to my partner and me.
I gave it to her/my partner and I gave it to her.

Bluelady · 02/02/2019 14:35

You're right @Pancreed. I didn't cover all eventualities. I love a good grammar discussion!

tinstar · 02/02/2019 14:36

Oh that's interesting pencreed. So:

"My partner and me."

but

"My partner and I are going on holiday"

Is that right?

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/02/2019 14:39

Partner and I sounds pretentious

ScreamingValenta · 02/02/2019 14:41

It doesn't sound pretentious when it's used correctly.

Hugglessnuggles · 02/02/2019 14:45

I also had a manager that would say/email ‘send it to myself’ I pointed it out several times, he told me I had no understanding of grammer🤷🏻‍♀️

PenCreed · 02/02/2019 14:51

“My partner and I are going on holiday” is right, even if it does sound a bit pretentious! But normally if someone said “who’s going on the trip?” the response would be “My partner and me”, which is both correct, less pretentious sounding and shorter!
