I ate fried grasshoppers. Actually they tasted delicious. What did you eat?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surströmming

Had it in Lapland. It smells so bad that it’s illegal to open it indoors. We were excitedly served it at a welcome dinner. It’s fucking awful, but when a whole town of people is nodding at you encoraging you to eat it, you do. Bastards

ComtesseDeSpair · 01/02/2019 00:58

Balut, in the Philippines. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(food)

Once I got over the slight weird feeling about it, it was actually very pleasant - a bit like chicken and cream cheese in taste.

Flyingfish2019 · 01/02/2019 01:00

I feared somebody would say Balut. I had heard of it before... but from how you describe it, it sounds yummy.

Balut. It was awful. A drunk night in Manila and I still remember it. I can eat many things but feel slightly queasy at the memory of that one.

Python too - that was fine.

Tuna eyes - awful

Century Egg - quite nice, actually.

Fugu - not as good as tuna or salmon.

Flyingfish2019 · 01/02/2019 01:14

Everybody on here ate Balut? Should I try it?

Goose barnacles.
Hugely expensive — but for a reason, people risk their lives to gather them from offshore rocks in dangerous seas.
They are lovely, taste like the best clams in the world, sweet and meaty with a bit of a flavour like mussels too, but I do feel guilty about eating them.

JellySlice · 01/02/2019 01:27

Fried calves brains. Sliced, breadcrumbed and fried.

At the height of the BSE crisis back home in the UK.

Made in my honour, as a very special dish to welcome me. What could I do? I ate it.

Looked revolting, tasted marvellous.

HeronLanyon · 01/02/2019 01:36

Not unusual but for me the beryniddest was that Norwegian cheese which is brown and very sweet like fudge. Swedish also. Had some as a child and have never forgotten taste which was really surprising and bewildering. Did not like it but ate quite a bit as was fascinated greedy

HeronLanyon · 01/02/2019 01:37

Gjetost I think.

RogueV · 01/02/2019 01:39

Sheep’s brain curry
It was ok

Kizziebel · 01/02/2019 02:35

BBQ rat which was actually very tasty (countryside rats not sewer rats)

freezinguplands · 01/02/2019 03:04

Ants eggs, an expensive delicacy, they aren't super tasty but I got them for mil and I and we both ate them.

WombOfOnesOwn · 01/02/2019 03:16

I had a lion chop.

It was...a bit tough, and tasted like a gamier pork, maybe a bit like alligator.

MrsTerryPratcett · 01/02/2019 03:17

Snakes liver in alcohol. Tasted like alcohol. Thank goodness.

Worst was sea urchins. Rank rank rank. And a persistent flavour.

Fortheone · 01/02/2019 03:29

Oh you were all brave.

Sea urchins for me too. Served in their spiny selves with their tops sliced off like boiled eggs. I ate one tiny coffee-spoon sized mouthful and within 10 minutes had huge red welts all over my arms.

The only time I'ver been allergic.

jarviscockerslover · 01/02/2019 05:42

Crispy fried ducks tongues served up in a bowl like potato chips

OrchidInTheSun · 01/02/2019 05:52

Guinea pig. It was nice but fiddly.

Mum2OneTeen · 01/02/2019 05:57

Raw Witchety Grub: Envy was utterly disgusting, no wonder I am strictly veggo now.

GirlDownUnder · 01/02/2019 05:57

I thought mine would be unusual but it’s pretty tame compared to you lot!

Crocodile and marmalade sandwich. Was pretty good. But that might have been the beer I was drinking at the time Grin

DroningOn · 01/02/2019 06:04

Roasted guinea pig

FrangipaniBlue · 01/02/2019 07:58

Grasshopper tacos.....

I've also tried that strange fudge flavoured cheese - bizarre!!!

JellySlice · 01/02/2019 08:10

I luuuuurve gjetost.

CountFosco · 01/02/2019 08:18

Me: sea urchin mousse in a fabulous restaurant in Spain. It was really good, foodie highkight of that holiday (along with black pudding omelette which was awesome).

DH: deep fried sparrow in Burma. Like a mini roast chicken that you ate in one bite, bones and all apparently.

SubparOwl · 01/02/2019 08:38

Cat soup, in West Africa. I'd assumed it was goat.

Nomad86 · 01/02/2019 10:05

Snake curry in Vietnam
Fermented horse milk I Mongolia (absolutely vile)
Duck's heart in China
