I ate fried grasshoppers. Actually they tasted delicious. What did you eat?

Fly burger in Mozambique. I tried it while working out there near lake Victoria. It didn't taste of anything. No seasoning was used at all. A few years later there was a documentary
about it on the BBC.

I had a lion chop.

Cooked or roar?

steppemum · 04/02/2019 13:53

I have drunk fermented lare's milk and fermented camel's milk

Bith a delicacy where I was living. An aquired taste, but OK. Wouldn't ever choose to order it on a menu though!

I went into a restaurant in Madrid once and there was guy eating these 2 huge meatballs. I asked the waiter if I could have the same but he said it wasn't possible, as they were bull testicles. There was a bullring round the corner and each night they would serve the testicles of the poor creature than had died in the ring as a one off meal to the first person who ordered them.

So the next night I got there early and ordered the testicles. They were lovely, but much smaller than what the guy had had the night before. When I'd finished them I thanked the waiter and asked why they were so small. And he replied "seniorita....sometimes, the bull...it wins."

Alligator and crocodile are nice, but can take ages to cook. My advice if you order it, always ask them to make it snappy.

Excited101 · 04/02/2019 15:28

Horse, absolutely to die for- nicest meat I ever had

Goat, didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. It was a bit sticky and fatty

Spaghetti bolocamel, fine

You wouldn’t get me eating most on people’s lists! Duck embro? No thanks 🤢

JellyBears · 04/02/2019 15:29

We had Aligator meat in Florida. Tasted ok. I was 10 so I can’t remember much about it. But I think it was very fish like.

I rather like trying unusual meats, I've had squirrel, lion, zebra, springbok... the best thing so far I think is Giraffe Sausage, its like delicious beef.

StoatofDisarray · 04/02/2019 16:07

Lambs brain fritters in Rome. Not that unusual. Had a sort of claggy texture!

SlowNorris · 04/02/2019 16:07

Oh you were all brave.

Not the word I’d choose, cruel more like.

FuckBrussel · 04/02/2019 16:07

Hakarl - fermented shark - in Iceland.

I actually really liked it - we bought some to take home... (blush)

MrsTerryPratcett · 04/02/2019 16:10

Not the word I’d choose, cruel more like.

Why specifically? Factory-farmed meat in Western countries is more likely to be problematic than some of these. Unless you object to all meat eating, in which case, fair enough.

TheHorseYouRodeInOn · 04/02/2019 16:18

But Lion steaks though Confused

MyBreadIsEggy · 04/02/2019 16:20

In rural, northern Thailand meeting DH’s extended family for the first time, I tried:

  • BBQ snake (was alright, kind of like tough chicken)
  • Owl (which was shot out of a tree by MIL, plucked, gutted and roasted. Was a bit like pheasant)
  • Crispy grasshopper/cricket/mystery insects (didn’t really taste of anything, just salt and chilli)
FreshBoomBatImaTouchIt · 04/02/2019 16:38

I'm not veggie or vegan but I can't imagine eating Lion or Giraffe meat. It doesn't seem right some how.
