To think it’s really shitty to expect someone to work unpaid overtime...

and then dock their pay when they’re sick?

My contracted hours are 9-6. I arrive early every day, I never take an hour’s lunch, my boss decides he wants lunch which I go out and get for him, I buy my own at the same time, and scoff it at my desk. I stop working for 20 minutes tops. I work late almost every day too.
This month I have worked 20 hours overtime- the equivalent of 2.5 working days, for which I will not be paid.
I was off sick for 2 days with norovirus. My boss has deducted those two days from my wages this month.
I spoke to my colleagues about, they all just shrugged and said “that’s what it’s like here” “this is how it is... you can’t clock watch.” They all know it’s completely crap, but nobody says or does anything about it.

AIBU to think that’s absolute bullshit?

Those questions! Hmm

I wouldn't have gone for the interview....

Time to instigate work to rule. You aren’t in that office for a minute over your paid hours. If they won’t give, stop letting them take.

If you aren’t in a union, join one!

Working additional hours as needed doesn't mean working unpaid hours. I wouldn't imagine that it is legal to demand unpaid overtime - even if your contract said so (which it doesn't imo), contracts have to be fair in order to be legally enforceable. I'd contact HR about my unpaid hours and from now on I'd do strictly the hours I was paid for. If your boss sends you out for lunch, I'd consider that part of my working day and take my full lunch hour separately. Actually, unless it was a specified part of my job, I'd stop doing his personal errands - it's not 1976!
or I'd spit in his sandwich 😉

I used to work in banking (in the UK and then back in my home country). I loved it. Initially I had an amazing team, I would wake up in the morning and be happy I go to work. Honestly we were like family. Overtime wasn't expected but if shit hit the fan we would all stay and sort it.

And then I moved to a different city and shit went bad. Really bad. Overtime was not only expected but imposed, people were staying there until 7-8 pm (day finished at 5.30!) just so they can be seen there. I had a FULL month when I started when I didn't have lunch AT ALL. Unpaid overtime, of course.

Then I got ill after 5-6 months of crazy work, pretty much no food and shouty boss. I got a terrible sinusitis (like literally I couldn't stand on my feet) and my doctor signed me off for a week. I called my boss to let her know and she started SHOUTING that if I don't come to work she'll make sure I'll be fired for one reason or another.

When I came back I made sure I left exactly at 5.30 and took my full lunch break. She used to come the kitchen and shout when she saw me eating😂

I only could resist for another 3 months or so, then I quit. I also made on hell of an exit questionnaire.

I found another job in 2 weeks.

Simple solution
Don’t work overtime unless it’s paid.
Staying behind once in a blue moon is fine, but don’t make it a habit

Wow, Prosecco - you could have had a field day at a tribunal with her, that's proper workplace bullying, that is!

Let me guess OP you work for Admiral !

I’ve NC for this but the OP definitely does not work for Admiral. When I worked there I got sick pay, I took my allocated breaks and lunches and if I was ever logged in for More than my allocated time I was allowed to have the time back in lieu. I only recently left because I became a SAHM. They definitely deserve their place in the top places to work.

They weren’t perfect but from what I’ve read on here they’re amazing compared to some companies!

Work out how many hours you have worked this month. The divide your gross pay for this month (ignoring annual salary) by the number of hours worked. If that takes you below the national living wage (£7.83 per hour) then report them to HMRC. If your salary is close to £18,000-£20,000 then they will probably be in breach. It's a funny technical rule about how and when they're allowed to average annual salaries and it's how John Lewis got done for NMW/NLW breaches. You can report to HMRC using a form on their website and it's anonymous. Doesn't necessarily help you now but it's a nice way to get revenge by bringing down an HMRC investigation on them.
