AIbu to send dd in as Cleopatra for World Book Day?

I know it’s a few weeks away yet, but im away with work for 3 weeks in a few days so trying to organise.

Dd recently went to a fancy dress party and she went as Cleopatra. It was a last min rush job and I ended up ordering quite an expensive costume online. She’s only worn it once to the party. I don’t really want to spend more money on a different wbd costume when she has a perfectly good costume at home.

I know Cleoptra’s not a book character but wibu to send her in as her anyway?

Is she in horrible history books?

Sirzy · 31/01/2019 19:40

Surely you have answered the question in your last sentence?

At our school your supposed to take the book (or st least be able to talk about it) with you.

Can you change the costume or use bits of it to make something book related?

SaucyJack · 31/01/2019 19:40

Yeah, it’ll be fine. Most kids wear either Batman or Elsa anyway.

EwItsAHooman · 31/01/2019 19:40

YANBU, do it and say she's from a Horrible Histories book.

Reception aged DS is going as Chase from Paw Patrol because that's the only costume he'll wear. I couldn't give less of a shit that it's not a book Grin

mildshock · 31/01/2019 19:41

Google some books about her?
There will probably be some kids books featuring her somewhere.

JohnWolfenstein · 31/01/2019 19:41

Shakespeare? Anthony and Cleopatra?

Meralia · 31/01/2019 19:41

My dd went as Boudicca for world book day in primary school. She’s in books so I just went with that.

Same as cleopatra, she’s in history books isn’t she?

DecumusScotti · 31/01/2019 19:41

She’s in one of the Asterix books I think. And Shakespeare. You could probably find a children’s version of Antony and Cleopatra (think there’s a series illustrated by Tony Ross).

PenCreed · 31/01/2019 19:42

Get her "Asterix and Cleopatra" and send her in with that. Bonus points if you can get another child to dress as Asterix.

reup · 31/01/2019 19:42

I sent my son in as Henry 8th. He took in a book about Tudors. Better than 200 Harry Potters and Wheres

She also in at least one play!

SaucyJack · 31/01/2019 19:42

Oh, and thinking about it I think she was in a book by some bloke called Shakespeare.

reup · 31/01/2019 19:43

Where’s Wallys

IncomingCannonFire · 31/01/2019 19:45

Oh god, when is world book day. My kid hates dressing up. I need to prepare!

EwItsAHooman · 31/01/2019 19:47

March 12th for our school but I think they're all different.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 31/01/2019 19:49

@ShadowHuntress

One of the 2 main characters in the first 6 Time Hunter books is an Egyptian Princess called Isis. She spends most of the books dressed as a mummy, and then dressed in costumes from the time she travels too but she's still an Egyptian Princess! And a book character! So call the costume Isis and you're good to go.

Here are some fiction books about ancient egypt maybe you can adapt costume to fit one of these?

ChrisjenAvasarala · 31/01/2019 19:54

That's the first time hunters book. They're good for ages 5-8ish. A boy, Tom, breaks an ancient statue and the princess Isis is released. She'd been trapped inside for 5000 years by Anubis. Isis and Tom then get sent back in time to find 6 amulets.

ShadowHuntress · 31/01/2019 20:00

Thank you so much for all the replies. Think I will most probably go with an Egyptian princess and find one of the books mentioned for her to take with her.

Also like the Asterix and Cleopatra idea. Might speak to one of her friends mums and see if her ds can go as Asterix!

Wbd is 8th March at our school. They always do non-uniform days on a Friday.

dancinfeet · 31/01/2019 20:10

my daughters last primary school book day we forgot all about it until the night before. she wore a pinafore dress (a bit on the short side) with a t-shirt, striped over knee socks and plaited a couple of pipe cleaners through her pigtails and drew on some freckles, and took her copy of Pippi Longstocking

AutumnCrow · 31/01/2019 20:13

Cleopatra existed. We kind of know that because of all the archaeology that exists and all the history books she's in - both ancient (eg the writings of Plutarch) and modern (eg Shakespeare and onwards).

If you want to reference a specific children's book, as opposed to any of that back catalogue, I'd look one up on Google - there are loads - and print out the title page and synopsis. Maybe discuss what was important about her, her lineage, her political affiliations, her death.

'Egyptian princess' is a bit naff really. And ahistorical. Cleopatra was awesome.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 31/01/2019 20:20

Autumn, no one said she didn't exist! But world book day is an about getting children to read more, particularly fiction to help them engage their imagination and think up new stories and introduce them to new characters they've never met before.

History is very important and most school do study specific blocks on Vikings, Egyptians, Romans etc. That's the time to delve further into amazing historical figures, world book day can simply be for fun. If you want to go historical then go historical but it's not "pathetic" to introduce a child to a new fiction book and a new character.
