Doctor won't give me diazepam ..aibu?

lucyhar · 31/01/2019 12:45

I've been getting diazepam off my doctor for around 4 years now for when I have to travel by plane.
I normally get 7 tablets a year.
My doctor has retired now and I'm travelling to Australia in may to see my aunt and uncle.
I've just got out of the doctors (new doc) and he refused any.
Now I understand people get addictive but I get 7 tablets a year!
I have a massive fear of flying,I've tried CBT,hypnotherapy, kalms,I did a fear of flying course and nothing.
Before I was prescribed diazepam I didn't go on holiday for 7 years.
They gave me my life back (without being dramatic)
Aibu to speak to the practice manager?

@Seline GPs are more expert than the average MN poster

I find it quite laughable that a GP would say don’t go to work on them, not that I don’t believe the PP, I just think this doctor was being way ott.
I dont think it is laughable at all. Im glad he said that considering they state my DH was in after taking it!
Honestly this attitude of people on this thread is shocking.

Smotheroffive · 02/02/2019 22:24

Sorry, was your answer in there somewhere Seline where was it?

GPs have studied chemistry and anatomy and physiology a d biochemistry, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say GPs are not the experts. Can you explain how you know better the effects than that?

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 02/02/2019 22:26

Maybe Seline's a chemical engineer for big pharma, Smother, or a psychiatrist, or a bishop. People can be all sorts on the internet.

PengAly · 02/02/2019 22:28

@Seline so can you tell us all what qualifications in medicine you have that allows you to know various chemical compounds found in wine vs. Diazepam? Im really interested in why you seem to be so much more knowledgeable on this subject then a doctor

PengAly · 02/02/2019 22:30

Oh mumsnet sure is amusing...

GPs come onto a medical thread and give the truth on a topic as per requested by the OP. OP and Mumsnetters dont like the truth therefore the GPs must be fake ones, i hope this makes it onto the classics 🤣

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 02/02/2019 22:32

It is highly amusing. Threads asking for GPs are legion, but on most there is nary a one, yet on this one . . . it's uncanny. I agree, this is one for Classics.

Comeonchameleon · 02/02/2019 22:37

I’ve done a presentation at work after 10mg of Diazepam prescribed by a doctor. Unless you’re doing manual labour or driving there’s no restriction to working

All these people feeeling very upset about people disregarding the ‘legislation’ on here. The ‘legislation’ was apparently from the Civil Aviation Authority - who don’t do this - and a very very quick glance at the NHS page for Diazepam states it can be used for SHORT TERM ANXIETY SUCH AS FLYING!

I have though, taken diazepam, lorazepam, sertraline, citalopram, fluoxetine, zopiclone, tramadol, dihydrocodeibe, diamorphine, morphine and concerta.

I'm quite familiar with controlled drugs and tranquilizing drugs as a patient (all prescribed, I'm not a cokehead before someone starts).

PengAly · 02/02/2019 22:48

@Seline please stop troll hunting just because you disagreed with actual professionals. Also you don't have to claim, you seem to be making very broad assumptions as if you have done specific study or science based research. And no, you cant just use your own experience as proof of something. Comparing an anti anxiety drug toa glass of wine? Really?
You also seem to be listing your medication history as if its something to brag about, very odd attitude to have but ah well.

Comeonchameleon · 02/02/2019 22:52

@pengaly you sound familiar?

Smotheroffive · 02/02/2019 22:52

Yes, you're not telling me anything, but you are not answering. They have trained to use the drugs and understand the effects, do you believe they don't, as that seems to be what you are saying? No, they don't make the drugs! But they do know and understand the drug action, but more importantly, to this thread, they prescribe according to medical need only. Flying, as expressed by GPs here, doesn't fall into that category. You can argue all you want, but you still explain your comparison? Which seems to be used as evidence, but you haven't explained why, and yet the gps who know the answer, are to be ignored?

Seline · 02/02/2019 22:52

I've not accused anyone of being a troll. Simply pointed out some posts don't add up.

It's very clear you're not a chronic patient, you're someone who's got very limited understanding of benzos. Which is fine, but don't start scaremongering when there's absolutely nothing of substance behind what you're saying.

I listed those because I've had various dealings with consultants, registrars, and other healthcare professionals in order to obtain them and we've had very in-depth conversations about the safety and necessity of them, long term v short term use. I'm a chronic pain and chronic anxiety sufferer. I don't take anything without fully researching it and discussing it with a specialist.

There's a potential serious side effect to over the counter drugs ffs. Let's not get carried away.

PengAly · 02/02/2019 22:55

@Comeonchameleon you sound familiar?
I have no idea what you mean by this Confused

Smotheroffive · 02/02/2019 22:55

I'm not sure how you taking whatever cocktail of drugs somehow entitles you to tell GPS want to do. You are not qualified to give drugs to others, or recommend their usage, you have your personals anecdotal experience, which is valid, but not research or qualification for some of the things you assert.

Smotheroffive · 02/02/2019 22:57

Who are you talking to Seline in your last point?

PengAly · 02/02/2019 22:58

@Seline im not scaremongering, im giving my thoughts based on what a qualified doctor and pharmacist said to me. Apologies if i choose to trust their insights more than someone who compared a drug to half a glass of wine!

Seline · 02/02/2019 22:59

That was to Pengaly.

My point is that chronic patients likely have consultant involvement who will be specialised in the field and therefore the information will be more relevant than a general practitioner who has a broad range of knowledge but no in depth special field.

Seline · 02/02/2019 23:00

The effect is very similar in a lot of people, PengAly

DustyMcDustbuster · 02/02/2019 23:01

throws all the diazepam onto the thread, slams door

Comeonchameleon · 02/02/2019 23:04

scoops up the Diazepam, sends some to Op, then reallly chills out for the rest of the night

PengAly · 02/02/2019 23:04

@Seline do you have survey findings that indicate the effect in a lot of people? Sorry but I really dont think your information is valid. You dont know better than a doctor just because you have had a lot of medications prescribed to you or visited a consultant.
And accusing posters of not being who they say they are falls in the category of troll hunting

Comeonchameleon · 02/02/2019 23:07

@Pengaly do you have survey findings that show that taking 2 ibuprofen shows less intoxication than a glass of wine? No of course not because that would be odd to have as an individual. Doesn’t mean it’s not true.

2mg of Diazepam is a tiny amount and would be unlikely to resort in any noticeable impairment

Smotheroffive · 02/02/2019 23:08

There aren't going to be anymore GPS and engineers anyway, cos they'll all be towel folders #ASMR you heard it here first! (Or maybe Gogglebox)

PengAly · 02/02/2019 23:09

@Comeonchameleon im not the one acting like i know more than doctors so why would i be expected to have surveys or research? Your point is well, pointless.
