To ask for your healthy late evening snack ideas

So I've piled on the pounds since DS was born and I really need to cut back. My biggest problem is the evening snack. Wine, biscuits or crisps or nachos or whatever whislt watching abit of telly 😋 I just can't maintain that anymore. So what are your suggestions as an alternative? It would be nice to have something as DH has no intention of stopping.

Cucumber and carrots. With hummus if needed. For sweets try watermelon. That'll do:)

LadyFuschia · 30/01/2019 21:50

Wasabi peas
Herbal tea instead of wine and then I don’t eat snacks!
Popcorn

blueskiespls · 30/01/2019 21:53

Lollies are quite low in calorie. It depends if you want something as low cal as possible. Or something that actually has a bit of nutrition!
Low cal options:
Lolly, celery, cucumber, apple, frozen yogurt,
Nutritional:
Greek yogurt with fruit - high in protein
Almonds
Almond butter on something..
boiled egg

Slightly higher in cals but yummy 😋 :
Choc topped rice cake
Options Hot chocolate

If you like sweet things too, then Hartley's sugar-free jelly is lovely.

Bit of full-fat Greek yogurt with some stewed apple and cinnamon. Full-fat is lovely and will satisfy you better (ooer). Or, Greek yogurt with low-sugar chocolate spread and toasted hazelnuts.

Elderflower cordial with tonic water. Tesseire do the only sugar-free elderflower cordial I've seen, and you can't tell the difference between it and normal full sugar.

DeadCertain · 30/01/2019 21:59

Snack - size tubs of snack olives from Aldi are lovely.
Raw carrots.

anniehm · 30/01/2019 22:02

Honestly, it's a habit you need to break - we also started making tea after dinner rather than pouring wine straight away (he has a glass or beer afterwards, I rarely do). For snacks we just avoid, you can't eat what you don't have.

themoomoo · 30/01/2019 22:06

no snack? we eat dinner at about 6'ish then don't have anything till about 12:30 the next day. You don't need to be constantly snacking

MrsEricBana · 30/01/2019 22:07

Lots of tea!! Couple of sugar free polos. What blueskiespls said if you want actual food - sliced apple with spoonful of almond butter on the plate to dip in is yum.

Surfingtheweb · 30/01/2019 22:07

Quark with a couple of nuts chopped up & a drizzle of honey

Or as above with fat free Greek yoghurt

Cucumber sticks, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes & olives with some nut butter.

Drinks - only drink on a Friday & Saturday & swap wine for Gin & slimline or vodka, sugar free lime cordial & soda water. For snacks on these nights get some goats cheese, cured meats & veg as above.

While you break the habit of drinking have some sugar free drinks as alternatives to booze.

Why do you need food in this way?

blackteasplease · 30/01/2019 22:10

I think no snack is probably best.

But I agree some of the suggestions are good such as carrots and hummus. What about yoghurt and oats mixed together or (fancier version) bircher muesli?

SallyWD · 30/01/2019 22:10

I have a cut off point - no eating after 6.30pm and I don't. I've lost weight doing this. I need rules. If I allowed myself to eat later on I wouldn't stop. The more food I have the more I want. By stopping eating at 6.30 it's nice and simple.

Eyewhisker · 30/01/2019 22:12

Find a nice herbal tea. I love Apple and Cinnamon. Any snack before bed goes straight to the hips, but a posh herbal tea feels like a treat.

knittingdad · 30/01/2019 22:17

Knitting gives me something else to do with my hands while watching TV which makes me less likely to want some food in my hands to eat.

Tooldemont · 30/01/2019 22:18

Carrot and celery sticks (no hummus- it's fattening) just dip in lemon juice for some zing

BrokenWing · 30/01/2019 22:19

My snacking was way out of control last year, like many the new years resolution is to lose weight so snacking needs to go.

It is so hard, like giving up smoking, 4 weeks in and is still tough.

I'm logging everything I eat on MFP before I eat it and when I see the calories taking me over my daily limit it is stopping me. Drink water to fill you up or find something to distract you. As pp said you need to break the habit.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/01/2019 22:25

Just have an absolutely ridiculously large dinner like I just did a few hours ago. I can barely move now let alone stomach a snack.

Princessmushroom · 30/01/2019 22:27

I really like salsa. Onion (or spring onions), tomatoes, lime juice done.

scissorsandpen · 30/01/2019 22:30

Pickles instead of crisps for me and I’m going to try Indian spices roasted cauliflower florets apparently very tasty ! And miso paste boiling water and some mushrooms is about 50 cals !!

PeridotCricket · 30/01/2019 22:30

We go for a walk after dinner most nights and come back and have a cup of tea. It’s helped break the snack thing....

TheRhythmlessMan · 30/01/2019 22:31

Greek yogurt with a squidge of honey.

Vanilla flavoured yogurt (is that 'healthy'? Hang on a mo. Don't want to know)

Notcontent · 30/01/2019 22:32

Just don’t. It’s a habit. Once you break it, you will not miss it.

TheRhythmlessMan · 30/01/2019 22:32

Wheee are you @PeridotCricket ? I wouldn't want to walk outside tonight. Brrrr.

Doje · 30/01/2019 22:39

Find some low cal ones and plan them into your day. Mini Haagen Daaz choc ice is about 150 cals. Morrisons own ones are closer to 100. Yoghurt, honey and 'crunchy bits' (Grape Nuts) is a fave in our house. Or an Options, or a Freddo bar.

Or do an exercise class. I do some form of exercise 2-3 nights a week. I'm not out of the shower until gone 8pm and my mental cut off for food is 9pm so I don't have much to go. I also clean my teeth after I shower which deters me from snacking. Or, if you do snack afterwards, you've already earnt it!

SummerInSun · 30/01/2019 22:42

Agree with others that hard as it is, best bet is to try to break the habit. I’ve got Pretty much the whole of Twinnings herbal tea range (far more exciting flavours on their website than you see in most supermarkets).

Alternatively - if you can afford it, and I realise many people can’t - a punnet if raspberries, blackberries or blueberries is sweet but low cal and full of vitamins, etc.
