To think this employer is taking the piss ?

My 17 yo attended an interview on Saturday. The position was for Shop Manager (it’s an independent food based shop).
Hours, holiday, pay etc was discussed. My son would be opening/closing the shop, cashing up at EOD , 6 days a week. He would be working on his own with no lunch break 10-6.
He was successful & received his contract last night.
The employer has removed any paid holiday (agreed 28 days in the interview), his salary would be £200 a week & 2 days paid training to be paid back if he leaves within 12 months .
It’s taking the piss isn’t it ?

The employer has just messaged him & offered him £6.50 ph.
We know that the current ‘manager ‘ leaves next Thursday so he’s in a bind.
DS has messaged about paid holiday. TBH he probably wouldn’t even take the holidays but wants to ensure he gets what he is entitled to.

Are they expecting him to work the full shift with no breaks at all? I know employers don't have to offer paid breaks, but normally employers will factor unpaid breaks into the working day. When is he expected to eat/take bathroom breaks? Your OP reads as he'd be the only employee working there? That would ring alarm bells also, in terms of health and safety and shop security.

What happens when he needs to go to the toilet?

SnowDuvetDay · 30/01/2019 23:56

Yes he is the only employee there Monday- Friday. There is another employee at the weekend aged 15.
If he needs the loo he will need to go as quickly as possible.
Also just come to light that they aren’t allowed to use any hot water.
So they make a milkshake- fatty ice cream, milk etc . They have to wash every mixer/jug after each milkshake but they can only use cold water to wash the jug - surely that’s not going to get clean?

When I say fatty I mean in terms of fat in the ice cream that needs hot water

Report to Trading Standards or whoever is in charge of cleanliness. I believe no hot water is pretty much an instant fail.

So, a call to Environmental Health too to check their hygiene procedures.

How's he supposed to wash his hands after using the toilet?

I keep thinking about your son. I’m sure you’ve had lots of good advice already, fwiw, I think he should look for something else that is properly run.
I was a bit like that at that age and got treated terribly at some places.
Whilst I think a bit of flexibility is good, so is knowing your rights & responsibilities and valuing yourself & your work appropriately.

The thread on awful employers shows that there are a lot of these sorts if people out there & the earlier he can spot them the better.

Good luck at the apprenticeship fair, I hope he finds something he really likes.

I thought that 17 year olds had to be in education or training. Have I got this wrong?

It's up to the 16+ year old person to participate, there's currently no enforcement available in current law to penalise non-participation.

Major health and safety failings! They need to be reported.
