Or am I using Mumsnet wrong?

For me, the pleasure of reading Mumsnet is spending time reading through threads that interest me. Yes, sometimes I skip through v long or repetitive ones, but I always read all OP messages - why wouldn't I? when I am interested in a thread, I am interested in actual updates or any clarifications.

I also don't post when I find a topic has really been thrashed out. I know I have nothing different to add, so I don't post. Unless I do have something different to add, or where I feel OP is getting an unfair deal.

I am not trying to be thread police - post what you like, I'll still read it Grin but I just don't get it. It ruins the enjoyment for me of actually interacting. Am I doing it wrong, or AIBU?

I’m the same as you OP, and read muuuuuch more than I post.

Justkeepswimminglalala · 30/01/2019 06:45

I'm not sure what you don't "get" op? Lol

Justkeepswimminglalala · 30/01/2019 06:46

But I too read way more threads than I ever post.

AwakeAfterMidnight · 30/01/2019 06:48

I am the same. I don’t placemark, just put threads I’m interested on watch. Rarely comment unless I have something new to bring to a thread.

I do hide an awful lot of threads though.

Monty27 · 30/01/2019 06:49

Think you got it just about spot on Wink
It took me a few years.
The opening posts are getting longer and longer and longer.
Too tedious.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 30/01/2019 06:49

@Justkeepswimminglalala I should have said, this thread was prompted by a rather long, current, fast-moving thread where a bunch of TWATS can't be bothered to read OP's updates. So are posting irrelevant shite. Unhelpful, distracting, wrong.

Why bother? Why not read the thread halfway properly? Who gives a shit what they think, when it is uninformed and plain wrong? That is what I don't get.

PiggyPlumPie · 30/01/2019 06:51

If you're doing it wrong then so am I!

I can't see the point of saying what has already been said in a million ways. I bookmark and watch if a thread catches my attention.

Villanellenovella · 30/01/2019 07:00

I'm always amazed at all the name calling on mumsnet

LoniceraJaponica · 30/01/2019 07:05

That's exactly how I use mumsnet. If the OP is interesting enough to catch my eye I skim read the replies if it is a very long thread and properly read the updates. I don't understand why posters don't bother to read the updates. Although I have been caught out on occasion when the OP has a name change fail.

Ifangyow · 30/01/2019 07:08

I don't understand why someone doesn't read a thread all the way through before posting.
Example. Username starts a thread which then runs several pages of opinions.
Poster with opinion reads say the first page, then decides to add a post, without reading the other ten pages, which probably has the same opinion, thus duplicating that opinion over and over. She also misses Usernames updates too by doing this.
Just read the entire thread first.

MoreCheeseDear · 30/01/2019 07:19

"I haven't read the whole thread but ......"

Don't comment until you have, dimwit.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 30/01/2019 07:48

@MoreCheeseDear well, quite!

BlackCatSleeping · 30/01/2019 08:00

The one about the balloons in party bags recently was hysterical. The Op said pretty early on that she had changed her mind about putting helium balloons in the party bags, but there were still pages and pages of people giving her a hard time about this.

twoseven · 30/01/2019 08:12

I would be good if Mumsnet had a button to just show updates so you don't need to scroll through loads and loads of pages
Apologies if said before (haven't read all threadsWink )

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 09:14

You can highlight the OPs posts two so it's pretty easy to skim through to see the OPs updates and ignore dozens of pointless posts saying exactly the same thing.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 09:15

Sorry, that wasn't very clear. The thread should show the OPs posts highlighted in green, so you can skim through, but I'm not sure if you need to set this up or how it looks on different browsers/devices.

reallybadidea · 30/01/2019 09:19

The threads that make me roll my eyes are the ones where everything that can be said about the subject has been said, the OP has stopped posting and yet STILL it will rumble on for a few hundred more posts. A bunch of posters go round and round in circles, saying the same things that everyone else has said and arguing with each other. Utterly pointless.

Justkeepswimminglalala · 30/01/2019 12:07

Thanks op, that makes more sense to me 😂...yes, I do the same. Skim other replies, and read op updates. Some threads are about 10+ pages long when you first see them. Who can be arsed reading all of that??

halfwitpicker · 30/01/2019 12:10

Sign of the times, innit

RevRichardWayneGaryWayne · 30/01/2019 13:17

Cancel the cheque.

missmouse101 · 30/01/2019 13:20

I wish I knew how to highlight the OP's responses. Any idea?

Fatasfook · 30/01/2019 13:22

I wish there was some way to highlight all posts by the OP, it’s tedious having to scroll through pages and pages of comments to find OP updates.

SasBel · 30/01/2019 13:26

Settings, highlight posts. Yours are purple, op in green.

DioneTheDiabolist · 30/01/2019 13:30

YANBU OP, I use it pretty much the same as you. I don't really understand people who don't read read the thread or OP's posts but feel the need to comment anyway 24pgs in.Confused Even more confusing are those who come on, say they haven't read the thread and then ask "has anyone mentioned...yet?" in a patronising sort of tone.Confused Why? Just why?

missmouse101 · 30/01/2019 13:32

Gone to settings but there is no 'highlight post'. Please can someone explain how to highlight OP's posts on a thread?
