Hi all, I've name changed for this. And I'm also posting here for traffic (I hope you don't mind).

I constantly get thrush. It's been going on years. I have been to the GP about it being so recurrent and they just prescribe high dosages of the treatment which works and then it comes back eventually 😩

It's as if it's always there although mild and without symptoms at times. Then something like having sex or wearing tights will cause all the symptoms to begin again.

Has anyone been through this and found a way to stop it somehow?

I'm desperate and really hoping you guys can help 🙏🏼

Do you take a good quality pro biotic?

Have you tried a broader spectrum anti fungal

Is it definitely thrush? Have you been tested?

Here is what keeps my vaginal itching under control- cotton underwear, tights with guesses cut out, washing the area with cetraben, taking a daily probiotic, eating Greek yoghurt at least 3 times a week.

laurG · 29/01/2019 20:25

Did you go on meds for three months? I did this and it helped. Every three days for a week then one a week for three months. Still happens very occasionally but much less than before. Pregnancy triggered it for me.

ifoundthebread · 29/01/2019 20:25

Following as I have the same issue. It used to be caused by copper intoxication off the copper Coil. Had thay removed and it cleared up for a couple of year and now its back, alot 🙄

TwoATee · 29/01/2019 20:26

When you say a good quality probiotic, would that be like actimel or something?

It's definitely thrush. It's been checked numerous times and it's always thrush 😫

Is it definitely thrush and not BV?
Has your DP been treated as thrush can be passed back and forth?
Do you eat lots of sugar?

Fabaunt · 29/01/2019 20:28

Have you been checked for diabetes?
Watch your sugar intake and carbs

TwoATee · 29/01/2019 20:29

DP doesn't have thrush so he's not passing it to me (if that makes sense). Eat some sugar, maybe a little more than I should but not millions.

Has your partner been treated? He is probably reinfecting you when you have sex. Hasn't your gp mentioned this??

Bunnyhop1502 · 29/01/2019 20:30

Sugar is the worst enemy of the thrush sufferer!

Ifangyow · 29/01/2019 20:30

Ask your G.P for Diflucan. This is a tablet taken orally that treats thrush from within. Ask for one for your partner too, as thrush can obviously go back and forth between you.
Also, is either you or your partner asthmatic? This can cause thrush via oral sex due to the residue of the inhaler remaining in the mouth and throat.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/01/2019 20:30

Has he been tested?

Piehunter · 29/01/2019 20:30

Multigyn actigel can be used regularly and helps to keep recurrent thrush at bay for me, £12ish on amazon, balanced ph, use at first sign of anything/everyday/after sex... I used to keep fluconazole tablets in stock all the time but don't need to anymore :)

HermioneWeasley · 29/01/2019 20:33

Good quality probiotic - a good tablet. I use lamberts. Definitely not actimel

RockinRobinTweets · 29/01/2019 20:33

Having athletes foot and cross contamination? Do socks before pants and dry your feet separately?

Fairylea · 29/01/2019 20:34

Have you had your oestrogen levels checked? I had recurrent thrush and saw a specialist and they found my oestrogen levels were very low which meant my vagina was too dry to absorb the canestan pessaries properly so they weren’t actually treating it well, and the lack of oestrogen was changing the ph of my vagina so I was more prone to thrush. They put me back on the combined pill to replace the oestrogen (I was on the mini pill before which doesn’t have oestrogen in it) and I was given ovestin internal oestrogen cream. Since then I haven’t had thrush at all.

Oaktreepark · 29/01/2019 20:36

I was plagued by thrush until a dr recommended washing with dermol cream and using epaderm if very dry down below. Might not be for everyone but life changing for me, I think I had mild irritation/dry skin/dermatitis that kept flaring up into thrush. Optibac do a probiotic specifically for women www.optibacprobiotics.co.uk/shop/for-women?size=14&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkMDiBRDNARIsACKP1FHYfu68BtNThljBoRE_TdZBOPFwZoNRI5bSXRX70InGRhmlysgGAXEaAvOBEALw_wcB
The usual other advice - no soap/bath products, cotton pants, loose trousers/skirts, no tights. Get partner treated at same time as you. Some say cut down on sugar in diet. 💐 it sucks

TheHauntedFishtank · 29/01/2019 20:36

I get a weird thrush/cystitis thing which has been sorted by over the counter cystitis sachets and canesten+hydrocortisone cream. I have seborrheic dermatitis on my face and scalp and now suspect that’s what it is on my bits.

PeoplesFrontOfJudith · 29/01/2019 20:36

Coming off the pill was the ultimate cure for me
If it’s def thrush and not BV like already suggested then:
Cotton underwear
Natural fibres for trousers and leggings, no tight jeans, avoid tights at all costs - I miss BHS as they used to do crotchless ones!
Only wash with water, no bubble baths
Reduce sugar
Use non plastic sanitary products like Natracare or reusable ones

Oaktreepark · 29/01/2019 20:38

oh another thing that helped - a dr prescribed me a steroid cream to use if irritated. Sometimes for me it’s irritation that turns into thrush and the cream settles it before that happens

Oaktreepark · 29/01/2019 20:39

And a mooncup, much less irritating than other sanitary products

WorkingMumofTwo · 29/01/2019 20:45

Ugh, you have my sympathies OP.
I had this a few years back. It was awful.

Only thing that worked for me was a candida diet starting with a cleanse.

At the same time I took Fivelac sachets a couple of times a day (from what I remember).

ChaoticKate · 29/01/2019 20:45

Coming off the pill helped me. I also only use organic cotton sanitary products, definitely nothing scented and changed very frequently. Only wash down there with water and no bubble baths or anything like that.

CrohnicallyEarly · 29/01/2019 20:47

I have to avoid anything scented- including sanpro (I use a mooncup), no shower gel or deodorant near my vulva, and I have to use plain non-scented and non-coated toilet paper as anything that has aloe Vera or shea butter or whatever will irritate me.

I think mine is dermatitis based as I have contact dermatitis and eczema in other areas.

TintinandSnowy · 29/01/2019 20:48

Coming off the pill helped me too

Waterlemon · 29/01/2019 20:49

Yes multigen acti gen - I buy multi packs from amazon. I had recurrent thrush for about 3/4 years and it has solved the problem!

I use it every day when active, I use an old medicine syringe and use 2.5ml (I find anymore gets to messy) when thrush is bad it can sting like hell for a bit, but then is fine.

I then use it every other day for a week, then every 3rd day, then once a week until thrush is gone. I also use it alongside oral or pessary treatments.

I use it as a lubricant and always apply it the morning after sex. I find I’m quite prone to thrush just before my period, so will use it the week before and it tends to keep it at bay (or very very mild at the least) I also use it at the first sign of any dryness or soreness.

You can get a version just for thrush, but it comes in just 5 individual applications and I haven’t noticed a difference to justify the extra cost.
