So I have just had my 51st birthday and celebrated it with adult dc and a selection of friends from all age groups.
I had coffee and cake with my peers then a night out with jaegerbombs and adult dc etc as old school friends declined that.
I have dip dyed pink hair and usually wear jeans/leggings/boots etc in black or one item a vibrant colour (pink that night).
Bff laughing about our differences and says I will be THAT old lady one day. I 've decided that's cool. I will just be me but older.
So would you agree that a lot of middle aged and older women feel that it's got to be everything beige and your hair too?
Aibu to fully intend to drink shots and dance and wear purple on my 80th birthday ? Grin

I'm in my 30s and would rather gouge my own eyes out than drink shots and go clubbing but good luck to you Grin

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 29/01/2019 12:44

My great uncle treated himself to a brand new Mini with all the bling extras for his 80th!!
Personally I am going to be a Lovely Lurcher Lady!!

thetemptationofchocolate · 29/01/2019 12:44

When I retire from work I fully intend to dye my hair bright red :)

recklessruby · 29/01/2019 12:45

TheOrigFV45 · 29/01/2019 12:47

Is 51 old? Yikes. I am 48 and identify with your post, but I don't regard it as anything special.

recklessruby · 29/01/2019 12:47

@thetemptationofchocolate My hair is long and mid Brown but the ends are pink. I tuck it up in a bun for work Smile

Fuck beige. Never, never, never! I bought an MG when I was 56 and totally enjoyed it. I have every intention of growing old disgracefully.

bobstersmum · 29/01/2019 12:49

Go for it op! There's nothing remotely interesting about beige is there?

recklessruby · 29/01/2019 12:53

I 've found my people! We will all be the coolest old people ever! Grin

Happy birthday - but I'm really surprised that this is how you see your peers. Not my experience at all. The middle aged women I know are busily engaged in forging new careers and having adventures. I cannot imagine that any of us would consider wearing jeans or dip dying hair to be a marker of extreme free spiritedness ...

Weirdlookingbricks · 29/01/2019 13:00

I don't know very many women in their 50s who are beige in appearance or outlook.

Cuttingthegrass · 29/01/2019 13:01

My adult daughter wore some of my outfits on a trip home recently and her friends loved them! I was so proud

Standing in solidarity at being one of those old people Grin

Tinty · 29/01/2019 13:01

Beige is the new Pink don't you know Wink

recklessruby · 29/01/2019 13:02

I love my friend and have known her since we were 11 but she has fully embraced the beige. She's happy with it though. Just not for me.

Nah live your life how you want. I will still be riding horses at 80 if alive. I'll just pay a strong man to lift me on if I need the help. Grin

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/01/2019 13:04

So would you agree that a lot of middle aged and older women feel that it's got to be everything beige and your hair too? I suspect the hair thing is simply that your generation is the first to feel dyeing hair an improbable colour is a normal thing to do. For my generation, in our 20s it was very much an oddball thing to do, and probably not compatible with most jobs or careers. And for the current 80s and above, even dyeing your hair a "normal" colour was something you didn't admit to.

KrystalTipps · 29/01/2019 13:05

I'm nearly 60 and dye my hair purple sometimes, because when I was young it wasn't the 'done thing' unless you were a punk. So I do it now - and I have noticed a lot more older women doing it. I plan on growing old disgracefully. I don't own anything beige, most of my clothes are bright - except work clothes. Go for it - Sod what everyone else thinks!

Bluelady · 29/01/2019 13:07

I had blue hair in the 80s when I was in my mid 30s. I also had a responsible and well paid job.

FurzeandHarebells · 29/01/2019 13:09

But if she’s happy with her style there’s no more virtue in your style than hers.

Everyone dresses how they choose.

Your clothes really tell you very little about the person in them.

One of my most staid friends (personality wise) currently has blue hair. One of my least conservative friends looks like a minister’s wife.

stevie69 · 29/01/2019 13:14

I'm just shy of 52. Here's some of my recent hairstyles. I have a nose stud and a Medusa stud, too. And my clothes are ..... interesting to say the least. There's no beige.

I'm a chartered accountant too; the profession needs some colour Blush

Thank you. There are lots; my hairdresser likes to paint Blush

Triffictriffid · 29/01/2019 13:27

I’m nearly 60 and don’t own anything beige. Most of my friends are early - mid 60s and none of them are beige either. Saying that we don’t have pink or blue hair either. We like to look our best and pretty ‘current’. DD often borrows my shirts and sweaters and has some of my jackets. The beige brigade where I live look about 75+. Hopefully our generation and up coming ones won’t do beige ever! Unless it’s a light ‘camel ‘ which is perfectly acceptable
