have posted in local but not much traffic there. anyone scrolling by, could you help? I may be moving to leeds soon and I'm wondering where to start. I'm looking for a nice-ish area, not too far from the university, with a local football club that my son could go to, and a primary school and secondary. he is 10 so I think he goes into year 7 now and then to secondary in sept, would you say that's right. am moving from ireland so am not familiar with english school system. grateful if someone could point out a few areas. will be renting long term. thx a mil

I'd recommend Headingley going on your requirements. It's close to the Uni, mainly a family/student area, near Rugby ground if DS is into that. Give it a Google for the schools etc.
Welcome to Leeds!

Lizadork · 29/01/2019 10:39

The September after the child's 11th birthday is usually when they start high school (which is year 7). Sounds like you may be actually looking for a year 5 or 6 place within a primary school.

Ceci03 · 29/01/2019 10:41

yes thanks I'll be looking for year 6. headingley seems quite expensive. do you know what horsforth is like.

I second Headingley. My ds2 is in his 2nd year at Leeds Uni and lives there.
Near the Uni and not too far into city centre.

A4Notebook · 29/01/2019 10:41

First step I think would be to speak to the Admissions team at Leeds City Council to see where has spaces. Most of the nice areas will have schools that are full

rainflowerstar · 29/01/2019 10:42

Horsforth is lovely but more expensive then Headingley.

A4Notebook · 29/01/2019 10:42

Horsforth is lovely but very expensive

rainflowerstar · 29/01/2019 10:43

Meanwood is more family friendly then Headingley. Headingley is full of students, drinking and rugby. But it is a good night out lol.

Shockers · 29/01/2019 10:43

My son lives near Horsforth and is looking to buy there. He likes it a lot.

chaoscategorised · 29/01/2019 10:44

Meanwood (just next to Headingley) has come on loads in recent years and could be a good place to look!

chaoscategorised · 29/01/2019 10:44

Ah crossposted with @rainflowerstar!

Ceci03 · 29/01/2019 10:47

Meanwood - sorry LOL my son will love that name! thanks very much I'll look there. I have a list of schools with vacancies in year 6 so I'm trying to match places with schools. thanks for the tips. off to google some more now.

Meanwood is a decent area.
What is your budget? Alwoodley has good schools but is more expensive

Ribbonsonabox · 29/01/2019 10:52

Meanwood, Headingly and Far Headingley are absolutely lovely. I used to live in Headingley and loved it... the part of Headingley closest to central Leeds can be quite lively and prone to break ins... our flat got broken into several times... but I still loved it there! Out towards meanwood or far headingley is better for families

Ribbonsonabox · 29/01/2019 10:53

You could also check out Chapel Allerton as its lovely round there and a bit cheaper I think as its further out

Year 7 is first year of secondary, so you want year 6 from now until September.
Secondary school applications have already gone in, but if you are moving in the next few weeks, you might be able to get into the same round of applications as the allocations haven't gone out yet.

We have quite a few friends in Leeds who work at the University. They mostly live in Meanwoood, Moortown, Gledhow and Chapel Allerton areas of Leeds. I think they are nice areas - may be more expensive than some other parts of Leeds though. Chapel Allerton is very nice.

I know some of their children go to Lawnswood or Carr Manor secondary, and I think they are all happy with those schools. Though I think good secondary schools in north Leeds (don't know about other parts) are oversubscribed. So you might not get your chosen school even if it's your nearest, especially if you come after all the places have been allocated.

How much are you looking to pay in rent?
What size house ? And will you have a car or be using public transport?

Ceci03 · 29/01/2019 11:09

I'm trying to work out how much I can afford in rent. It's hard to know how much I will be taxed etc. I was hoping to get somewhere in around 750 - 800 but those areas seem more expensive than that. I'm still checking though. Roundhay seems quite nice, but all areas seem more expensive than I was hoping. Maybe I should go out a bit further. thx for all the help.

I grew up in Headingley but am priced out of it now, it's very expensive for even a modest house as they are very popular with student landlords.

I now live in Woodhouse which has a bad rep but I really like it as it's very conveniently located and has some wonderful green spaces.

South Leeds tends to be cheaper than north.

reetgood · 29/01/2019 11:15

Try kirkstall? LS5 postcode. You can get up the hill to the universities, there’s a rugby club and training. Quite a diverse mix. You start to fall into hawksworth and Bramley around the edges, some of which are just fine and some of which are a bit rough. And some of which are a nope!

The other place to try is the st Ann’s/ Eden area which is burley bordering on headingley. Between kirkstall and burley road. Some nice ordinary semi detacheds there for cheaper than headingley.

Lol at Chapel Allerton being cheaper. I grew up there. I now live on the borders of kirkstall because it’s too expensive for us to live in Chapel Allerton!

Difficult when you’re not here as it will be the case where some streets that are cheaper are fine.

Bittermints · 29/01/2019 11:16

What's Cooking like these days? We lived there in the 70s. I found it dull as a teenager but it was a good family area and easy commuting distance from the centre. My brother went to Lawnswood.

Bittermints · 29/01/2019 11:18

Bloody autocorrect! Cooking, not cooking. Blush

Ceci03 · 29/01/2019 11:19

thanks so much that's really helpful. off to check out other areas now.
