have posted in local but not much traffic there. anyone scrolling by, could you help? I may be moving to leeds soon and I'm wondering where to start. I'm looking for a nice-ish area, not too far from the university, with a local football club that my son could go to, and a primary school and secondary. he is 10 so I think he goes into year 7 now and then to secondary in sept, would you say that's right. am moving from ireland so am not familiar with english school system. grateful if someone could point out a few areas. will be renting long term. thx a mil

I was raised in Adel but have lived in Yeadon for nearly nineteen years. No train station but plenty of buses to Leeds, Bradford, Horsforth, Headingley, Otley and Kirkstall. An up and coming area but still less expensive than Horsforth. Leeds Bradford Airport is in Yeadon but the aircraft noise isn't too intrusive.

We used to live in Pudsey. It's cheaper there and you're ten minutes into town on the train and another ten to the uni. DH did his PhD there and went on to work there, so definitely doable.

WildFlower2019 · 29/01/2019 11:25

Another ten min walk to the uni sorry.

Hi there
I'm from Dublin but been in UK for a million years and in Yorkshire since 2007, now live outside Leeds (30 mins into Leeds on the train). There's some great tips above about areas, so I won't wade in, esp as I now live in the sticks, but there are some online calculators which should be able to tell you what your net pay will be, which may help you figure out what rent you can afford.

hey apparently chilled - a fellow dubliner! I'm a bit worried about my 10 year old. Have you experience of schools. It's going to tough on him as he loves where we live now, he has so many friends, he knows his way round, he's very settled. but I'm moving because I just cant find a permanent home. I'm sure you know the housing crisis in dublin is mental. I'm trying to set things up so it will make it easier for him especially as he will probably go into year 6 until the summer and then change to secondary. any tips or differences you noticed when you moved. was scared to make the move for so long (was born in the uk) but am taking the plunge at last! for the future....

Leeds is, unfortunately, expensive for housing (buying or renting). As I think you’ve found from your comments so far you’ll unlikely to be able to afford somewhere that ticks all your boxes. It may be worth looking for places that border the nice areas as it will be cheaper but you’ll still be near all the amenities.

We wanted a 3 bed house with garden in a nice area, but no way we could afford that in Leeds, so we moved further away and commute in to work.

I live in Yeadon, it’s lovely. Good secondary school, decent transport links and a really nice family-friendly area. Should be within your budget too.

Hey @ceci03, sorry for delayed reply. My eldest is 10 and in Y5. All my kids were born here so have only gone to school here. When I talk to anyone at home, I'm always struck by how much shorter the school day is at home, something I'd forgotten about. Even my 5 year old is at school til 3.20 every day. Ime people in Yorkshire are lovely and v warm and welcoming. Quite a dry sense of humour (or maybe that's just the sarky Yorkshireman I married...). I often how much we get for free--free school books, cheap school uniform from supermarket, free prescriptions and medical treatment, free dental for kids. I do miss Ireland, even after over 20 years here, but I love living in England.

I often should have been "it's amazing" - talk about fat fingers.
