To feel like every one is always under threat of redundancy at the moment

I'm late thirties early forties. I was made redundant in the 2008-10 crash, then again after getting pregnant (I sued and won.)

Now it looks like the company I'm working for are putting a load of jobs under consultation and you look at the news and it seems to be a problem for lots of people, even companies that are supposed to be doing well.

Is this just how it is now? Endless cost cutting with absolutely no job security any more?

I'll probably go and work as a consultant, but the reoccurring stress is just getting me down at the moment.

Is anyone working in an industry where they feel safe?

I work in car insurance. Can’t see me losing my job anytime soon unless they plan on outsourcing more work overseas. I think it’s unlikely being as though they’re pulling a lot of our outsourced work back to the UK.
I’ve been in the same job for nearly 20 years.

LunaLunitaLunera · 28/01/2019 20:30

I feel safe, I work in healthcare. Minimum wage but secure.

DareDevil223 · 28/01/2019 20:35

I've just got a job in a new government regulatory body (well non-departmental government body) so unless a future government enacts new legislation to get rid I should be okay but never say never....

TheABC · 28/01/2019 20:35

I have given up on job security and now freelance. At least with multiple clients, I get the variety and even if one falls through, it's not a catastrophe.

flingingmelon · 28/01/2019 20:35

Sorry - when I said 'these days' I wasn't thinking of Brexit especially. More that margins in everything are cut and cut so we just seem to be in a race to the bottom.

We used to get lunches etc provided on whole service days but these days we are told to bring a packed lunch and 50 pence pieces for the coffee machine Grin

Miljah · 28/01/2019 22:36

Coal face band 6 NHS HCP.

Pretty safe, actually! My T&Cs are falling, mind, and this is what will drive me out after 35+ years.

Miljah · 28/01/2019 22:38

melon it is absolutely a race to the bottom, aided and abetted by 'others' who suffer rubbish T&C thus think everyone else should, while the owners and upper management rub their hands in glee that our fellow workers are doing their dirty work for them.

londonrach · 28/01/2019 22:43

Dh been made reduntant three times in about 2 years about 5-6 years ago. Hell. Still fills me with fear. Everyone was losing their jobs then. Dare i say seems more settled now until the next redunancy crisis. No longer a job for life now

StartingGrid · 28/01/2019 22:44

Work for a company that has lost most of its market value in the last 2 years, share price through the floor. Can take some comfort from the fact I'd be comparatively expensive to make redundant but not taking for granted that I will be there in a year, two years, etc...

Accountant222 · 28/01/2019 22:58

I finished working in the steel industry in 2006. I had worked for that Company since 1990, I don't think a single year passed without some sort of restructuring or having to apply for your own job and have an interview.

It's been going on for an awful long time, I got fed up with it all and jumped ship.

hammeringinmyhead · 28/01/2019 22:59

I've been at the same company eleven years and survived redundancy twice. I am however on mat leave and very aware that I may not have a job to go back to as I work in head office for a retailer.

RussellSprout · 29/01/2019 09:26

Luckily I have skills in redundancies and restructuring (work in HR) so I comfort myself with the thought that if I'm ever out of work due to a recession I will probably be able to find freelance work doing restructuring for someone.... poacher turned gamekeeper I know.

It really is all about cost at the end of the day, we have capitalism to thank this for but I don't know what the alternative is.

JaceLancs · 29/01/2019 09:56

I’ve been living under threat of or actual redundancy for 20 years including being TUPEd 3 times
I hate it - as a single householder with no savings and little pension it makes forward planning impossible
I can’t commit to things eg would love a new kitchen and could probably afford it on interest free credit over 12-24 months but might be out of work from April
Same when I wanted to change my car - always have to buy outright can’t risk finance or lease etc
Then there’s the whole restructure and reapply for your job scenario had to do that more than once

Lushlemming · 29/01/2019 09:58

I have never been made redundant, always jumped before I was pushed. I work in a very niche area now, but creeping use of tech in the aviation industry will probably make the entire company bankrupt within a decade.

Thing is, most of us are just working a job, nothing special, nothing revolutionary. All this talk of up-skilling and such is pointless at that level. So frustrating.

Daytimetellysucks · 29/01/2019 10:13

In my current job I’m pretty safe.

I took voluntary redundancy at my previous role and was lucky to walk straight into my current role.

My previous employer announced redundancies every year - always the week before Christmas Hmm. I worked there 8 years and dodged it until I had enough and applied for voluntary redundancy.

I saw in our local press that they’re closing the UK office completely and moving it out to an EU country

Fatasfook · 29/01/2019 10:15

An increase in AI and mechanical labour is going to add to this problem. The human workforce is quickly becoming redundant.

Resignedtofate · 29/01/2019 10:30

Yep. I think it’s been worse since the 2008/9 crash. Bosses got to like the fear that constantly being worried for your job created. People worked harder for less money.

Our firm is currently going through a make life as shit as possible for staff in the hope some will leave process getting all finances absolutely pinned down part way through the year to “assess recruitment needs” so I suspect redundancies in the next month or so. Highly suspect I’ll be one of them but you can’t do anything really

badlydrawnperson · 29/01/2019 10:46

^This x1billion. If we stood up for ourselves we could stop these bastards.

chubley · 01/02/2019 13:36

I agree, but the problem is that people always need to put food on the table, and bosses rely on this need for money. It's distracting from the normal work, I know as I'm going through it at the moment.

Or work for a good company...? We do exist. Not the highest paid but everyone works loads of overtime to pad their earnings and the OT is all voluntary, not required. We are still growing and performing well and unlikely our jobs can be outsourced anywhere else. People get to apply for newly created jobs due to the growth or stick with what they do and gain seniority.
