To feel like every one is always under threat of redundancy at the moment

I'm late thirties early forties. I was made redundant in the 2008-10 crash, then again after getting pregnant (I sued and won.)

Now it looks like the company I'm working for are putting a load of jobs under consultation and you look at the news and it seems to be a problem for lots of people, even companies that are supposed to be doing well.

Is this just how it is now? Endless cost cutting with absolutely no job security any more?

I'll probably go and work as a consultant, but the reoccurring stress is just getting me down at the moment.

Is anyone working in an industry where they feel safe?

No - LA here always under threat Sad

flingingmelon · 28/01/2019 18:19

It's horrible isn't it? I just feel like I'm failing at life again.

I am. Some of my colleagues have been in and out of redundancy notice periods for 2 years. 3rd sector. Horrible

RussellSprout · 28/01/2019 19:01

Yup. Companies constantly have to prune staff to stay competitive.

Br3adnButt3rPud · 28/01/2019 19:22

My previous job was off shored to a non EU country where wages and cost of living is much cheaper. I know other companies who have moved factory production to cheaper EU countries. It's all about cost cutting.

Racecardriver · 28/01/2019 19:27

That’s been the way in wealthy countries for a long time. Certainly growing up it felt like my parents had zero job security. Of course they both chose that happily over the USSR where they would have had complete job security. It’s not the end of the world I suppose.

PooleySpooley · 28/01/2019 19:31

We have been restructured 7 times in the 10 years I have been there.

This makes people leave, retire and take VR.

There is barely time for the new structure to bed in before they do it again. We can’t get on with our jobs.

SherlockSays · 28/01/2019 19:31

I've been working 12 years, I've been made redundant 5 times in those years.. all by the same company! I moved around within the company until the completely shut in the north.

I've been working in the public sector for the past 2 years and my role is going through a consultation next year.

To me, it's just part and parcel of working life.

CiderBrains · 28/01/2019 19:38

I know the NMW rises have put loads of companies in situations where in order to stay competitive they have had to cut costs somewhere. Also the legal pension requirement has hit small businesses hard because the employer has to match it.

It's lead to staff cuts, hours cut, redundancy, cheaper alternatives to produce..

The problem is people want the best quality for the lowest prices but also want the best pay and hours and that has a nock on effect where one or the other suffers because you can't have both..

witchhazelblue · 28/01/2019 19:50

Had about 6 restructures in the last decade of working where I am now (University) and massive numbers of compulsory redundancies now going to be made by June this year. We're losing 15% of staff with the same to happen again next year if finances don't improve.

The worst part is there aren't jobs to go to. Very little being advertised that doesn't require a big drop in wages or giving a company your first born (so to speak).

Lazypuppy · 28/01/2019 19:52

I left retail cause i was worried about redundancy. Work in civil service now and pretty much safe as we are 'technically' understaffed by around 30%

Pk37 · 28/01/2019 19:53

My dh just found out today he will be made redundant in March
Luckily though he has something lined up or we’d be in the crap

Giraffey1 · 28/01/2019 19:54

Sadly I’ve come to accept it is the norm. I’ve been made redundant six times so far....

TheEntertainerr · 28/01/2019 19:54

This is part of working life. Just have to get on with it. I was made redundant before Christmas (second time in 8 years, but I've been through consultations 4 times in the past 10 years).

As with a PP, the first redundancy was the result of the business setting up a shared service centre in Poland; I had already dodged the bullet 2 years previously and took another internal role, but that role was eventually also outsourced to the same SSC.

My most recent redundancy was when the business decided it would be cheaper to outsource the function to a third party service provider.

Life goes on but each time it gets harder.

sickofturkey · 28/01/2019 19:54

I was made redundant 7 months ago... Still unemployed ... I spend on average 4 hours a day checking the same jobsites over and over just incase something comes up... 12 interviews in 7 months and no job offer! ...

Br3adnButt3rPud · 28/01/2019 19:55

I think only a few industries offer jobs for life now. Some people are able to gain jobs by moving to different places / countries and or learning new skills. I'm currently waiting on yet another restructure....

newnameforthis7 · 28/01/2019 19:57

Me and DH have been made redundant 7 times between us. And been through several recessions.

And SHOCKER there was no Brexit to blame!

We survived all the redundancies, and we will survive any more.

We will also survive Brexit, despite all the histrionics.

KnitterOfSocks · 28/01/2019 19:57

Local authority here. Constant restructuring. I'm lucky in that I'm very "niche" but I suspect eventually I will be outsourced to a private contractor and TUPE'd over. Although I think demise of Carillion might make them think very hard about that, I suspect eventually it will happen

FuzzyPuffling · 28/01/2019 20:01

I've been made redundant four times in my career (charity sector), none of it Brexit related. And none of it came with pay offs either; twice was at 1 year 11 months into a job. "Pick their brains then chuck 'em out" seems to be the idea.

Mugglywuggly · 28/01/2019 20:02

I’m at risk at the mo. 5th time in 9 years with my company Sad I am trying to be pragmatic about it and plan what I am going to do if I am chosen this time round.

I also keep telling myself, it’s not personal (even though it feels that way!!)

GNT1521 · 28/01/2019 20:09

For nearly 10 years I worked in finance and towards the end saw departments become redundant/relocated, they started falling like dominoes until the whole office shut. Some of the people working there had already been made redundant before starting that company. I hated the worry leading up to the closure, I wanted my severance pay so didn't apply for another job until nearer the closure.

I feel like some areas are safer as there is less threat from automation, e.g. Healthcare, social care, education.

RubyWho · 28/01/2019 20:13

I’ve been made redundant from each job I’ve had, over the past 20 odd years.

ooooohbetty · 28/01/2019 20:18

The only people I know who say the feel safe are my civil servant friends. This is because they have all been there since school, there are no job cuts in the department they are in and if there was they'd get massive redundancy packages and their pensions so they don't worryConfused

Kemer2018 · 28/01/2019 20:24

Yanbu.Local authority worker, 6 months into the role they start discussing process mapping/relocating/restructuring/changing my boss...🙄 been there 10 months now and we're still hanging whole they locate their arses from their elbow.
I've never known a stable job.....was hoping this would be......I'm 45, sick of it all now.

HollaHolla · 28/01/2019 20:25

I’m working at the third University in my career. I was made redundant from the first one in 2010; left the second in 2013 as my Mat Cover post came to an end; and currently at risk of redundancy at the third. It’s the way the sector is going at the moment, and at my institution, we’re technically understaffed by about 5%..... and we’re still to lose about 10% of the workforce. Not sure if I want to go now, or be left to deal with the increased workload with less staff. Sad
