To ask if anyone bought baby things before getting pregnant

furrybadger · 28/01/2019 15:13

Just that really, currently ttc but money will be tight when go on maternity of and when the time comes, currently saving money for that time and talking to friends the other day saying might start to stock up on things like nappies, wipes, little bits etc just to spread the cost, friends said iabu to do this as I’m not even pregnant yet.

Did anyone else buy baby things before getting pregnant ? Is it weird ? Aibu ? Confused

Stick the money in a bank account. Baby things will be very hard to look at it you struggle to conceive or have miscarriages. You could always open a separate bank account if you think you'll struggle to keep the money apart.

Readysteadygoat · 28/01/2019 15:21

I used to follow someone on insta who did although I think hers was mostly free stuff that she was being given. Having had 1 tmfr, and 5 miscarriages it kind of annoyed me. I actually think she did go on to struggle to conceive but definitely has a baby now. I wouldn't myself but second the idea of putting the money away

MamaDane · 28/01/2019 15:21

I did. Lol. Even though I've had a miscarriage, I don't regret buying stuff. I already have some baby clothes, pregnancy books, and parenting books. Wink I don't think YABU.

Darkstar4855 · 28/01/2019 15:22

I would put it in a savings account for now rather than buy things when it could be a year or more before you need them. You could build up a nice little sum to put towards the pram, cot etc.

Ladyoftheloch · 28/01/2019 15:23

I wouldn’t - I would set money aside in an account instead. Only because if you do have trouble conceiving (hopefully you won’t!) baby stuff would be a very painful reminder.

BarbedBloom · 28/01/2019 15:25

Put the money in an account. I bought a few bits and 10 years later am still childless. It is just a painful reminder

CherryBlossom23 · 28/01/2019 15:28

I've been tempted when I've seen a super cute outfit in M&S or Next but I feel like I'd just jinx myself if I did. Why do I even wander to that section Confused.
A savings account is a good idea

Andromeida59 · 28/01/2019 15:29

Currently TTC but no way I'd buy anything. I have looked but I couldn't face looking at them if it never happens or if I end up having miscarriages etc.

MynameisJune · 28/01/2019 15:32

No it’s weird I think. Especially nappies and wipes, where would you keep them? Plus you don’t know what brand might suit baby best. Or you might hate the ones you’ve bought when you start using them.

With clothes, you could have a huge baby and not need the tiny baby/newborn outfits that you’ve been stashing away. Or baby could be tiny and it will be the wrong season by the time they fit the clothes you’ve bought.

Put it in savings, buying baby stuff before a baby is the way madness lies. It’s would be an awful reminder if you struggle to conceive.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/01/2019 15:34

How will you feel if you get pregnant but have a miscarriage and it's all staring at you? Or if you don't get pregnant and as some point have to pass it all on?

The thought if that would make me say no.

Put it in the bank and if you donny trust yourself get one of those tins or jars you have to break to get in and put the money in there.

Good luck

Yogagirl123 · 28/01/2019 15:35

No I didn’t buy anything until after 20 week scan. Falling pregnant isn’t always easy so I know I would have been really upset to have baby things around, I didn’t want to count my chickens. Good luck OP.

Shmithecat · 28/01/2019 15:35

No, as pp said, stick the money to one side... I'm the polar opposite and didn't buy anything until 34 weeks other than a pack of 3 vests after my 20 scan.

KoraBora · 28/01/2019 15:36

Due to my age and previously having had a miscarriage I didn't start buying anything until after my 20 week scan! I was in New York and Toronto at 8 weeks pregnant and saw some gorgeous bits but didn't dare buy them as it would break my heart if I had lost my baby. Stash the money in a savings account. I was given lots of second hand bits so am glad I saved and could prioritise on what we really needed.

Good luck!

PaddyF0dder · 28/01/2019 15:36

Kind of seems pointless if you’re not even pregnant yet.

As someone above said, it makes far more sense to put that money into a savings account. Buying a stock of wipes and nappies and stuff would be bulky. And if you have trouble conceiving it would be quite upsetting to look at.

London91 · 28/01/2019 15:38

I personally wouldn't. Having two miscarriages have made me realise how uncertain pregnancy is. Its not just conceiving that's always difficult sometimes sustaining a pregnancy is. I would save and then once you're pregnant and have had your first scan start to buy the things you want.

PinkHeart5914 · 28/01/2019 15:39

It is a bit weird imo, as you don’t know how long it will take ttc, you may suffer miscarriages sadly many women do they are very common. TTC isn’t all that easy sometimes

Open a savings count and save the money instead until if/when it’s needed

BeanTownNancy · 28/01/2019 16:26

I wouldn't. Didn't buy anything until my baby hit viability, personally.

You don't know what sizes/seasons of clothes you will need. What brand of nappies/wipes you might want - best to try a couple once the baby is here and then bulk buy. Nearer to the time some new legislations/recommendations/fantastic new technologies might pop up and the stuff you bought a year ago is how obsolete, or your taste has just changed. You might find really good bargains or be gifted useful items and then you'd feel silly for having bought them before.

Plus... Miscarriage. Sad

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 28/01/2019 16:30

No I wouldn't. There's no guarantee that there will ever be a baby, or it might take a long time and there's probably something else you could use the money for. I think putting it in a savings account is a good idea though.

2ellenor2 · 28/01/2019 16:34

You'll be very bored when you do find out you're pregnant and have nothing left to buy. I'm 35 weeks and spent so much time researching, buying, organising and washing things and it's made the pregnancy go a lot quicker. 9 months is a long time

Wolfiefan · 28/01/2019 16:38

You would do better to put the money aside.

GummyGoddess · 28/01/2019 16:41

I did, took advantage of the black Friday sales and started ttc in the Jan, dc1 born in that October. It wouldn't have been staring at me if I had a miscarriage as we put it in the loft.

FridgeFullOfChocolate · 28/01/2019 16:49

Can’t you just save money instead? How will you know what you like brand wise etc until you’ve had the baby? You might buy a shed load of johnsons and have a baby it doesn’t agree with or you buy a load of size one nappies to have a big baby who goes straight into size 2.

The only products I used was johnsons shampoo and bubble bath 1 bottle lasted ages (months and months) as you only use a dot. Wipes we tried a couple of different brands until we found ones we liked. We bought pampers nappies for the first couple of months, then tried some other brands. We ended up using aldi in the day (so not on very long) and still having pampers at night. All this was trial and error.

I wouldn’t have had any idea what to buy or how much before I actually had my children, I’d have wasted a lot of money on stuff I didn’t need.

canuck43 · 28/01/2019 16:55

After suffering a miscarriage we went on holiday to Spain, saw a very fancy pushchair that came with matching parasol, play bag and anorak so bought it. Was pregnant 3 months after, loved that pushchair.

Megan2018 · 28/01/2019 17:00

I think it is weird, sorry.
Better to save the money, seems tempting fate. No-one is guaranteed a successful pregnancy.

RightOh · 28/01/2019 17:04

Currently TCC and absolutely not. But it's personal choice!
