...to ask why everyone has to be 'Darling'?

PBo83 · 28/01/2019 12:53

OK, so I'm relatively new around these parts so I'm likely to be lynched. But WHY is everyone 'Darling' (DD, DH, DC, DS...etc?)

I understand the use of acronyms but why the added 'D'? Besides. it takes two seconds to type 'daughter' or 'husband' or whatever (even less for 'son' or 'kids'). From that point you can then refer to them as 'him', 'her', them or whatever so it's hardly a hardship.

I fully expect an army of pitchfork wielding Mumsnetter's to turn up at my door any minute but this unnecessary 'darling' nonsense is truly cringeworthy!

OP posts:
ShatnersBassoon · 28/01/2019 18:18

which of course is nauseating but I use it as it seems the done thing here.

Well done for powering through the nausea. You could just not do that thing though, it won't set off the UnHun Alarm.

ssd · 28/01/2019 18:34

Shatners can you say that in English please Grin

AuntieStella · 28/01/2019 18:42

Shared jargon binds communities.

That there is a particular MN language is a great cohesive strngth if the site.

And D is such a useful letter - dratted, dick-brained, damned, dastardly etc

crispysausagerolls · 28/01/2019 18:58

I always assumed it was said tongue in cheek, and I quite like it

MeetJoeTurquoise · 28/01/2019 19:04

man hating arses
I've not seen any evidence of manhating, just a comment about us women not needing any mansplaining.

ssd · 28/01/2019 19:12

Sure you haven't MeetJoe

cricketmum84 · 28/01/2019 20:01

I use it as Dickhead about 90% of the time Grin

CallMeVito · 28/01/2019 20:26

I have been on here for donkeys' years and I find the acronyms ridiculous and confusing. It's not cringey only for newbies!

The only amusing thing is that posters feel nauseous about people calling each other "hun" but are happy to write about their "dear" partner or "dear" husbands. Oh the irony Grin

OP, in general MN doesn't like men - or "menz". Start a thread as a female, you get support, start a thread as a man and you are an abuser....

Mallorie · 28/01/2019 20:32

I mentally deduct 10 IQ points from anyone who uses it. 20 for 'ddog'. I also imagine they have 'LIVE LAUGH LOVE' and/or 'DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING' decals on the wall in their living room and cutout letters on a shelf in the bathroom that say BATH.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/01/2019 20:37

I use dh, ds etc and ddog - and I am afraid you are 100% wrong, @Mallorie - no decals in the living room, or letters in the bathroom. But don’t let the the facts stand in the way of a good prejudice.

YogaWannabe · 28/01/2019 20:40

taken on
Hmm

areyoureallysaying · 28/01/2019 20:42

It irritates the life out of me! As do lots of things in life, however I also enjoy reading most of what is posted and contributing too so I have to just ignore it> I don't use the acronyms myself

Raspberry88 · 28/01/2019 20:49

I always assumed it was said tongue in cheek, and I quite like it

Yes, that's how it reads to me...

AuntieStella · 29/01/2019 06:57

I don't think Mallorie really gets the MN lingo.

It's used by the people who would loathe the types of slogan she quotes.

And as MN is an unrepresentative and disproportionately well educated demographic group, you can knock off IQ points as suggested and still have people who are much more intelligent than the peak of the bell curve.

(And of course it's the specific MN sense, not twee gushing, raspberry is nearer the mark)

My thanks again to the poster who pointed out (in an earlier incarnation of this perennial thread) that my previous use of idiolect was incorrect, and that the better term here is sociolect. But who agrees that it's a really important linguistic feature marking a sense of belonging

Miane · 29/01/2019 07:11

I mentally deduct 10 IQ points from anyone who uses it.

Mallorie I suspect you posted the above to make yourself look superior.

I’m not sure that’s really worked out for you.

flowery · 29/01/2019 07:19

“Ddog” is shorter/quicker than writing “the dog”.

AtiaoftheJulii · 29/01/2019 07:21

Mumsnetter's

We're also quite particular about apostrophes being used correctly Grin

If you don't want to write DSD, just don't. I've been using those acronyms for about twenty years now, they're deeply ingrained, so I'll just carry on if that's ok with you.

calpop · 29/01/2019 07:25

God its just an oldbinternet convention, get over it. Having said that, AF for period is a bit silly All better than the truly vom-inducing hubby, bubs, hun, little man and "Hello fellow mummys" though.

Also preferable by far to the people in RL who put "full time mummy" on their profiles

Also, you have come across as a mansplaining arse OP (suppose you dont approve of that either), I'd suggest a namchange and anothet crack at it.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 29/01/2019 07:29

It's nice to refer to loved ones as 'dear' or 'darling'. Isn't it?
What's wrong with being nice??? Confused

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 29/01/2019 07:31

I always think of it as a bit sarky darling h has been a pita today, kind of thing.
But I agree that if you don't like it here, you are free to leave.

Prisonbreak · 29/01/2019 07:35

I agree. I find it weird and makes my skin crawl. Would never say it out loud so would never use it text form.

CalmDownPacino · 29/01/2019 07:37

I don't like it either. Particularly when people at a D to things that already have an acronym. It's meant to be shorthand so why add an extra letter to MIL, dog, etc. Pointless!

TaintforTheLikesOfWe · 29/01/2019 07:39

Anyone else guilty of using DH, DD etc. accidently when emailing someone outside of MN? Grin

TaintforTheLikesOfWe · 29/01/2019 07:40

Luckily my DH has the initials DH so it didn't look too weird when I did it on email to the physiotherapist Grin

Strugglingtodomybest · 29/01/2019 07:43

I also read it as being tongue in cheek, but I joined when mumsnet was a much funnier place.

If you have come to that conclusion then MN really has changed.
