To think about calling an ambulance?

For the past 3 nights I have woken up with chest pain that won't go away with antacids. I have tried Rennie tablets and gaviscon liquid. The pain just won't stop.
It has woken me again tonight and I have been awake for over an hour and had 1/3 bottle of gaviscon. Today the pain lasted most of the day with varying levels of pain from mild to stabbing.
My dh and 3 children are asleep (in australia) and I don't know what to do.

My husband had similar for three nights in a row. He didn't tell me this until after he ended up in hospital. At 2am 111 sent an ambulance out. ECG, blood pressure and all tests were normal, but the paramedic wasn't happy and they took my husband in for blood tests.
Blood tests which showed he'd had a heart attack.
On that third night if he had just ignored the pain and tried to sleep it off again (like he had done the previous two nights) I would have woken up next to a corpse.
He spent a week in hospital, had a stent fitted and is now fine.

Heart attacks aren't always this huge dramatic scene that you see on the TV and in film. My husband could have got up and done the school run as usual. He was in pain, but he could function just fine.

Every time I see one of these posts I am saddened by the ignorance that surrounds the reality of what it's like to have a life threatening health event.

HappyBumbleBee · 27/01/2019 19:26

Hope they get to the bottom of it OP.
Thank goodness you are in the hospital, definitely the right place x

cushioncuddle · 27/01/2019 20:18

I can't believe people were giving medical advice with what appears like no medical training or knowledge of the OP.

This is MN at its most dangerous !!

Thank goodness you're in the right place and I hope you feel better soon OP.

ragged · 27/01/2019 20:21

thanks for update. let us know how it gets resolved.

Rhynswynd · 27/01/2019 20:25

Hi all. You have all been brilliant.
I had an x-ray and blood tests. Everything looks normal but Dr thinks I may have a narrowing of vessels to the heart so have to organise a stress test.
Pain is till up and taking Endone for it. I will be going home I a while.
I'm really tired.

Take care of yourself, OP. You absolutely did the right thing in going to hospital.

lickencivers · 27/01/2019 20:28

I'd be interested in what your troponin levels are OP?

Glad the GTN is working. Have you had any aspirin / clopidogrel?

Who ever said that a heart attack can make your heart fill up and burst perhaps should have a look at the anatomy and physiology of the heart. A heart attack is actually a myocardial infarction and is a blockage of one of the arteries in the heart muscle itself causing either partial or full thickness ischemic tissue (no oxygenated blood gets to the heart tissue it self) means it doesn't pump effectively. It doesn't fill up and burst.

Tartsamazeballs · 27/01/2019 20:36

Sounds a lot like my grans heart attack- three days of feeling like there was something wrong but not knowing what, a sense of impending doom.

She had lots of jaw pain and shoulder pain. She never had the dramatic chest clutch and collapse heart attack. Eventually went to her GP who called an ambulance.

My dad had 24 hour of intermittent chest pain, eventually phoned an ambulance and they took him. Triage couldn't find anything so sent him back to the waiting room. The walk dislodged the clot in his heart and it blocked the blood vessel and bam. Down he went like a sack of shite. Would have died if he didn't have the heart attack in the A&E waiting room.

Women's heart attacks are very different to men's. These symptoms are a medical emergency, even if it turns out to be nothing you made the right call.

Polkapjs · 27/01/2019 20:50

You did right going in. Hope you get sorted soon

Fairylea · 27/01/2019 20:52

So glad you got it investigated. Hope you are able to rest at home soon.

Rhynswynd · 27/01/2019 21:36

I was told my troponin levels were negative. I also had some aspirin in the ambulance.
I had paracetamol and Endone to manage the pain.
I am ready to go home in a while. Still have pain though.
Thank you everyone for your messages.

Ooh you got Oxycodone, are you feeling high as a kite yet?!

Happy to hear you're ok Smile

Bluemascara4 · 27/01/2019 21:43

Phew! Glad you're ok Op.

How's the pain now?

Littlebird88 · 27/01/2019 21:44

I have sphincter of oddi dysfunction. GTN spay helps that.

SimplySteve · 27/01/2019 21:48

I feel your pain @Littlebird88 . Chronic biliary colic and SoD...

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 27/01/2019 21:49

I've got a hiatus hernia and have pain like you describe op I have to take a double dose of omeprazole to contain it.

Littlebird88 · 27/01/2019 21:53

simply steve it's awful. I wouldn't with it on anyone

YeOldeTrout · 29/01/2019 07:56

So no treatment, no diagnosis? Ah, how aggravating.
What will stress test determine, how long do you have to wait to get that?
Is it like Angina?

trinity0097 · 29/01/2019 08:09

Did they check your gallbladder? If you go back to a medical person ask for a murphys’ test. It’s simple, can’t see how it would cost anything!

cindersrella · 29/01/2019 08:09

Do you suffer with anxiety? Not sure if you have been asked this so if so I apologise

AllTheJingleLadies · 29/01/2019 08:20

Glad you went to the hospital. It sounds like my experience of gallstones, and it took several emergency visits to hospital for anyone to realise this, so please make sure this is considered and ruled out. See if you are jaundiced (the whites of your eyes will yellow around the edges) and if you have had dark wee / light poo this is an indication. Also itchy skin. While I was waiting for the gall bladder removal eating a low fat diet reduced attacks. When I had the pain it was so bad it took my breath away.

Good luck, whatever it is

NOTthepinkranger · 29/01/2019 13:49

The murphys test won’t cost anything the actual appointment will though.

OP what work up did they do? Hope you’re feeling better

Rhynswynd · 29/01/2019 20:51

I went back to hospital to do the stress test. I had no pain and managed it well enough. The specialist says the pain was more than likely pericarditis which is an inflammation from infection (?). I am pain free now but if it starts again to take ibuprofen. If I can't manage the pain to see gp.

Fingers crossed for no more pain.
Thanks for the good wishes and stories everyone. It is good to see other people's experiences so I can ask the right questions and watch for certain things. Grin

I work in a cardiology department. Please call an ambulance/paramedics. Chest pain is really serious and they can quickly do an ECG to help determine if the pain is coming from your heart. It's essential to get this checked out quickly, people who have heart attacks and then don't cove into the hospital until a few days later usually have much worse outcomes. The dizziness is really worrying as well to be honest. You need a professional to assess you immediately.

YeOldeTrout · 29/01/2019 21:57

Friend has that periocardio thing. She had loads of emergency hospital visits. I got impression it's something they can only diagnose after process of elimination. She has recovered well. So have hope!
