To ask for meal ideas using 2 hob rings as my cooker just broke!

As above my cooker broke, the bottom oven, top oven with grill and 2 hob rings no longer work. The cooker is only 2 years old and has been repaired 3 times under warranty already. It is no longer under warranty by 10 days. I don't have a microwave or slower cooker so meals will need to be cooked on the 2 working hob rings. Apart from pasta and sauce my mind has gone blank. I will need to save for a new one or a repair so will need to manage on the 2 hob rings for quite a while. I don't want to buy a microwave or slower cooker if I can get away with it as that money could go towards a repair replacement.

Chill
Spag Bol
Sausage casserole
Soups
Stews and mash

tealandteal · 27/01/2019 12:38

Google "one pot recipes"
Macaroni cheese
Spaghetti and meatballs
Curry
Various casseroles/stews with or without dumplings
Steamed fish with veg and rice

OkToday · 27/01/2019 12:41

Stew is a good idea thanks. 3 hours of an electric hob how much do you think that would cost? Shouldn't be any more than cooking s normal dinner really I don't think.

Omlette, stir fry, tacos, fajitas, soup, spaghetti Bolognese, chilli, custard, rice pudding, jelly

Pyotrkrolik · 27/01/2019 12:46

Soups
Lots of Indian and Chinese meals are cooked on the hob. Lentil daal is a v easy one as well as Chicken Masala.
Macaroni cheese (with tuna, sweet corn and peas added is popular if you have DC)

OkToday · 27/01/2019 12:47

Great ideas thank you and yes I have 3 dc they aren't fussy thank goodness.

Surely everything? Do you really use 4 hobs when you cook each time?

Just do veg in microwave for example or wait till a saucepan if free then do veg after?

I've never used more than 2 hobs.

This is a great recipe from Hello Fresh and doesn't take too long :)

You can have a look though their recipes too. They have lots of good ones that are just one or two pots.

Boil a gamon joint. Pan fry chicken breasts then make a cooked dinner. i have done pork in like gravy and onions on hob before.

etsiketsi · 27/01/2019 12:54

I do a lot on our stove top. As well as the usual stews, pasta, chilli etc, I do stifado, jambalaya, stuffed flatbreads, poached fish, chicken and veg rice. I also do a dish we call Chicken Stuff as I made it up (flour and seasoning dusted chicken browned in pan then removed), soften finely chopped onion, celery and rasher of bacon, add diced garlic and dried mushrooms that have been soaked. Add chicken back in with tarragon and parsley and add chicken stock (and a slug of wine if you like), add frozen spinach and kale and towards the end of cooking thrown in a good handful of peas. You can adapt it with any veg you’ve got in really but it needs the dried mushrooms for flavour.)

When we were left with just the hob for a while recently we often had steak or salmon shallow fries with some potatoes or rice, and microwave peas!
Also second things like spag bol and chilli.
Stir fry
Look at Chinese and Indian recipes which are often hob only
If you don't mind using premade sauces then there are lots of things to go with diced chicken, curry, Chinese sauces, Spanish chicken etc.

ilovemylurcher · 27/01/2019 12:56

You can always double up with saucepans- eg add peas at the end of cooking potatoes etc.

userschmoozer · 27/01/2019 12:58

You can cook one thing in the water in a pan, and another in a steamer on top.
Do you have a pressure cooker?

Glitterblue · 27/01/2019 13:04

I do most of our meals on the hob:

Chilli
Spaghetti bolognese
Macaroni cheese
Chicken casserole
Mince with mashed potatoes and veg (I often make the mince in advance so I can use the biggest ring later for the potatoes, then heat it up whilst I mash them)
Jambalaya
Curry
Slimming world warm chilli chicken salad - very nice and also quick

Slothcuddles · 27/01/2019 13:04

Stir fry

SometimesMaybe · 27/01/2019 13:04

Appreciate you don’t want to buy a microwave so you can save for a replacement but you can often pick up a slow cooker for about £20. That uses very little electricity.
On the hob -
Pasta
Stir fry
Mince and tatties
Omelette
Spag Bol/chilli
Stew
Soup
Salmon (other fish) in a frying pan

Slothcuddles · 27/01/2019 13:05

Any Chinese dish, most are stir fried, rice, noodles

BiscuitDrama · 27/01/2019 13:06

Sausages and mash. Veg cooks while you’re mashing.
Risotto.

OkToday · 27/01/2019 13:09

I have quite limited kitchen equipment, I don't have steamer inserts or a frying pan but they are cheap so could pick them up in a couple of weeks. And I thought I said but maybe not I don't have a microwave unfortunately.

I lived for years with a one hob electric ring when i rented.

I became the queen of one pot dinners.

EmUntitled · 27/01/2019 13:11

I know you didn't want to buy a microwave or slow cooker. Could you borrow one or get one cheap second hand? Check out places like freecycle, "I need a whisk" groups or ask friends. You would be surprised how many people have a slow cooker, pressure cooker or halogen oven which is never used etc.

Get a mesh steamer basket so you can cook potatoes/rice/pasta in the bottom and then steam veggies above.

In the mean time pasta is the most obvious meal choice. Cook the pasta on one ring, make a sauce with the other.

Sausages in one pan, mash in another.
Paella, risotto, fried rice all can be done in one pan.
One pot dishes, casserole, stew.

isitthehormones · 27/01/2019 13:11

Some great suggestions - I don’t really have any to add unfortunately, but will say if you can pick up a cheap slow cooker you’d have a lot more options, they are great.
