In asking for what to wear to a wedding help?

Darnsquirrels · 26/01/2019 18:19

It's in April. I'm planning on losing lots of weight (ha) so will be a size 10.

I'm very short with a massive butt and thick thighs.

Usually like to dress more on the trendy/unusual side but haven't been to a wedding in years and never a spring wedding. Plus I've not been to the UK in a while and don't know what's in/out fashion wise. I wouldn't wear something just because it's 'in' or discount something classic just feel old and grumpy and want to look good in front of people I haven't seen in years!

Thinking of things along this line, are they awful? A lot of stuff out here now is satin and sheer and no matter how much weight I lose there will still be lumps.

You definitely don't seem to be picking clothes (or fabrics) which flatter your shape/height. I think you should try separates rather than drowning yourself in dresses that you are too short for and won't fit your top half.

None of the dresses are particularly wedding suitable. The first two are more like beach dresses and the second two are work/office dresses.

Darnsquirrels · 26/01/2019 18:46

Hmm I really am not thinking smart enough am I? Confused

I like the 2nd one of those examples.

Argh Mumsnet won't let me put more than 6 images. I just found a coupe of nice ones but will have to wait to post!

You could just post the links

SinglePringle · 26/01/2019 18:50

I think Chi Chi is quite a long way from your style, OP.

Look at Essential Antwerp (I LOVE them!), Maje, Me and Em and Sandro. High end UK High street (around £300 for a dress).

Slightly more quirky than lace wedding guess dresses (Kate Middleton they are not!).

Also, Arkey and Other Stories for more High Street prices.

And can’t goneringbwith Vivienne Westwood.

Also, look at The OUTNET for discounted designer (Net A Porter outlet site).

Apologies for auto correct madness.

You may feel differently when the weight is off, so do not rush into anything.

kitkatsky · 26/01/2019 18:53

Are 50s dresses still fashionable? They cover a multitude of lower body sins

Christ, for that money I wouldn't buy any of them!!!

The Nea dress is OK. The second colourful one is vile. The third one looks like a shapeless curtain.

The second comment you made (with the pink dress) looks like a bridesmaid dress which might not be best...

Not a fan sorry. And especially not for how expensive they are!

Crazyfrog007 · 26/01/2019 18:57

The nordstrom dress is lovely though.

Sexnotgender · 26/01/2019 18:58

Any of these closer to the mark?

I don't like it, but the Donna Morgan dress seems a lot more appropriate.

I am personally not a fan of dresses or skirt above the knee in formal wear, even Kate Middleton doesn't look that great in them (and the woman has amazing legs let's be honest).

As long as you wear a slip underneath if needed, it's fine for a church wedding.

People focus a bit too much on the no white/no ivory/ no cream rule (as they should) BUT also should remember that you do not distract attention from the bride (no Liz Hurley flashing leopard print underwear), and you dress respectfully.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 26/01/2019 19:09

When I am really stuck, I stick to department stores like Selfridges or Liberty. It's quicker than exploring one brand after another.

garethsouthgatesmrs · 26/01/2019 19:09

i love this for a pear shape

uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_13.21/6428760208

and in spring i would wear a smart ivory/cream jacket with it.

so far i dont think any of the ones youve posted are dressy enough and I wouldnt wear an above the knee dress to a wedding especially with heavier thighs. Far more flatterig to be a-line and below the knee

DisappearingGirl · 26/01/2019 19:19

I can't believe I'm advising on fashion as I'm not very trendy, but if you're a bit alternative I really like Blue Banana dresses. A lot of them are quite 50s style so quite flattering. Some are a bit teenage / goth but there's a few that might be good for a wedding, e.g. this one
www.bluebanana.com/en/product/1027003/109/h-r-rhiannon-blue-dress

pantyclaws · 26/01/2019 19:23

I would look at Self Portrait and Needle and Thread dresses on that budget. Lots of different and slightly quirky styles but still very wedding

AnotherPidgey · 26/01/2019 19:28

A spring wedding is a gamble on weather, anything from sleety snow to 20+oC so you need something that can be layered easily.

Colours are normally light or bright.

A longer skirt is flattering and lengthening to short pear shapes. If your style is more quirky that gives you flexibilty to contrast the top half with the bottom half.

Metheven · 26/01/2019 19:51

I would definitely agree with the posters who suggest a 50s style dress. The large skirt is very flattering if you are bottom heavy. Pretty Kitty is a good website. If you wear it with a petticoat the volume makes it look lovely.

Darnsquirrels · 26/01/2019 20:01

@Kennehora Because if I stay on track with the weight I've lost so far I'll be a size 10. I've been losing 3 pounds a week for a while. I've taken in to account that it will probably slow down towards the end but that's still putting me at a 10.

Weight loss isn't a weird guessing game, I'm counting my calories in and my exercise and I'm losing what's projected.

I'm not so sure about 50's dresses. They let a little quirky/Elmo for me. Grin

A little quirky/EMO!

I really would wait until March to buy a dress, you would have a much better idea of your body shape and size then but still plenty of time before the wedding.

3 months to go from a size 16 to a size 10 is not very long at all - that doesn't give you much margin to ton up either.

SinglePringle · 26/01/2019 20:37

Meant to add Needle and Thread earlier. Wedding lace without being ‘prom’ or Kate Middleton. Interesting colour combinations and quite reasonable for the detail / work.
