To open the dishwasher once it’s started?

Allfednonedead · 26/01/2019 13:07

If I’ve just pressed ‘start’ and it has 3 hours to run, and then I find another mug, is it ok to open the dishwasher and put it in?
I think it’s designed for this to happen, DH thinks I’m a vandal.
AIBU?

I don’t see the problem.

PilarTernera · 26/01/2019 13:09

YANBU I do that sometimes.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 26/01/2019 13:09

I do but if the cycle is too close the the end of the wash cycle I find it doesn't always come out clean.

Doje · 26/01/2019 13:10

I always do this. Every time.

It's fine. They're designed for you to be able to do it. If not, the door would have been designed to lock once the cycle had started.

FullOfJellyBeans · 26/01/2019 13:10

I do this all the time, if you do it at the wrong moment you might get wet but it's never damaged my dish washer.

Readysteadygoat · 26/01/2019 13:10

My DH does this. I've asked him not to. Surely it's not designed to be interrupted?

Ifangyow · 26/01/2019 13:11

Yes, I do it all the time.
I load up, set it going and then find an item that's been hiding.
I only open the door slightly initially until the machine has stopped, then fully open it to place the offended item in it.
Opening it fully straightaway gives you a lovely unexpected shower.

FadedRed · 26/01/2019 13:11

Your DW takes three hours?

Cauliflowersqueeze · 26/01/2019 13:11

Course. I do it all the time. When you open the door the cycle stops. Then shut the door and either it restarts itself or you press Start and it will.

WoogleCone · 26/01/2019 13:13

I do it all the time. They automatically pause the cycle when the door opens and resume when it closes again.
Obviously if it's near the end you might not get a great clean but shortly after beginning will sort that rogue mug!

BiteyShark · 26/01/2019 13:14

Yes if I have just started it.

nicoala1 · 26/01/2019 13:17

Three hours for a cycle??

Sorry now I couldn't cope with that. But it may be some eco friendly thing (how much electricity is used though).

There must be a shorter cycle than that. Sorry for butting in.

Anyway I open d/w mid cycle myself for stray bits. But the cycle I use is one hour and that includes 15 mins drying. Then I turn it off, and the residual heat finishes the job.

Am I helping to save the planet?

Returnofthesmileybar · 26/01/2019 13:20

3 hours?? WTF, are you washing the neighbours dishes too? That's insane! misses point of thread

Anyway, open away it's fine again 3 hours it madness

Allfednonedead · 26/01/2019 13:20

Thank you! Consensus seems to be this is fine.

The 3 hour cycle is indeed the eco-setting and it can be speeded up for an hour, for those feeling impatient on my behalf.

From what I read, good energy ratings are being achieved by lower water temperatures combined with longer run times - at least in washing machines, which typically take longer to do a load than older models, and I imagine it applies to dishwashers too.

Undies1990 · 26/01/2019 13:21

3 hours??? Wow - is there a shorter, more economical cycle?

Yes, open the door to add stuff - I do that all the time without any problems (sometime I get a free steam facial at the same time, mind you!)

agedknees · 26/01/2019 13:21

Depends on the dishwasher. My new one locks. We found this out because my dh did what you are suggesting. He broke my new dishy.

Had to have a new locking mechanism put in.

Don’t do it. Wash the mug by hand!

Tensixtysix · 26/01/2019 13:23

My dishwasher is over 10 years old and we've always done this. Several times in a cycle. You just get a nice 'spa' facial when you open on the hot cycle wash Grin

Triskaidekaphilia · 26/01/2019 13:25

Same; I do it and DH doesn't like it/won't do it. I usually only do it in the first 20 mins or so.

Longdistance · 26/01/2019 13:25

YANBU.

That’s how they are designed to work, and tumble dryers are the same. Shame all washing machines don’t have this facility with the flap that opens, there’s always something that is missed.

BeanTownNancy · 26/01/2019 13:28

Every bloody time I finish cleaning the kitchen, put the dishwasher on and then walk into the living room to relax only to discover my husband has left about 3 coffee mugs in there, so am constantly opening the dishwasher to aggressively shove mugs in there while cursing.

NoParticularPattern · 26/01/2019 13:29

I do this all the time. I’ve never yet caused the end of days or the second coming. Pretty sure it’s safe (just don’t open the door with wild abandon otherwise you might get sloshed in the face by an exuberant sprayer arm mid swirly flourish)

DonCorleoneTheThird · 26/01/2019 13:32

read your manual, but of course you can open it.

What's wrong with 3 hours? I put mine on economy setting - 3h30 actually! after diner, no one notices if it's 1 or 3 hours at night anyway.

For faster program, there's a standard or even an "intelligent" program that goes quickly, but cost a lot more to run. We only use it at the weekend if we need to run spare loads during the day.

dollyknocker · 26/01/2019 13:32

I do it, but I always apologise to the dishwasher for disturbing it while it's doing its thing. (Yes, I know.)

ineedaholidaynow · 26/01/2019 13:34

For those saying 3 hours, our eco setting on our dishwasher takes even longer! I assumed all white goods are like this now.
