Someone just tried to call me..

I called them back and they said 'hi it's so and so, sorry I tried to call my friend Kisstory' - I asked them for their surname and didn't recognise it. They hung up. They must have tried to call someone with the same name as me.

Question is where on earth did they get my number from? They knew my name but were looking for someone with the same name as me...

I'm really careful with where I list my number. I've text them and asked them but no response...

Weird!

Depends on what your real name is really. If it's sth like Sarah then surely a pure coincidence that they misdialed and got someone else with the same name

Nicebudget · 25/01/2019 14:12

Kisstory is a radio station

HTH

Mulberry72 · 25/01/2019 14:13

Budget, it’s also the IP’s username!

HTH.

Maybe someone you know has had their phone stolen, or a suspicious/jealous partner is doing some checking?

Nicebudget · 25/01/2019 14:19

Yes I know

Just saying it makes no sense in the story as kitkatsky said!

Seaweed42 · 25/01/2019 14:33

I would stop contacting them. I'd never ring an unknown number back.
If someone doesn't leave a message then don't call them back. If it's someone you know or something important they will leave a message or call back.
It could be someone from years ago or a course or college or hair dresser, restaurant, whatever, you were in, someone has all the 'Susans' together and just hit the wrong one.

foxinthemist · 25/01/2019 14:41

Is there a reason why this is bothering you?

Someone calls - says they are looking for someone with the same name as you. You ask them to clarify their surname - they hang up.

At the point where they realised the person they are looking for is not you - inspite of you having the same name.

Surely you just shrug and forget about it?

Topseyt · 25/01/2019 14:47

Just block the number and forget about it. There really is no need to contact them and then fret over it.

There's a high chance it was a spam call, however careful you normally are when listing your number.

Repeatedly trying to call them back to solve the mystery is probably not the best course of action.

Topseyt · 25/01/2019 14:49

By continuing to text them you may also have just confirmed your number to a complete stranger.

JaneJeffer · 25/01/2019 14:52

Probably just a coincidence but now they're probably telling everyone how they rang a wrong number and then the person started texting them!

DollyWilde · 25/01/2019 14:52

It might be a massive coincidence. I was in an Apple shop the other day waiting for DH to finish faffing about with apple watches shopping and an assistant came over to me and said ‘are you Dolly*, here for our appointment’ - I wasn’t the person she was looking for, we just happened to have the same time.

*not Dolly for the hard of understanding posters, but a pretty normal mid/late 80s girls name that I don’t particularly fancy sharing online Grin

SaturdayNext · 25/01/2019 14:59

Maybe someone you know who has your number entirely legitimately, but also knows someone else with a similar name?

SaturdayNext · 25/01/2019 15:00

Or maybe someone who knew you but was completely thrown when you said you didn't recognise their name?

ShadyLady53 · 25/01/2019 15:05

Have you linked any social media with your full name to your mobile (Facebook, Twitter)? I've heard stuff recently of people being tracked down and called via someone searching them on Facebook because FB had their mobile number.

I've been having some unwanted attention from a male acquaintance so googled myself to see what came up...there was a very annoying page that gave my contact details from a gym pass offer I'd taken up via Groupon - won't be going back to that gym again! Google your name and see what comes up.

Best wrong number story I know

I worked with a women - call her W
In a previous job she worked with K
K was joining our company

Sunday evening W gets a phone call at home - Strathclyde Police looking for K
She tells them she doesn't know his number but she can tell them which number he will be at next day and gives them the office number
K gets a call on Monday as he starts his first day in our office - police have found his car.

Prior to this W and K hadn't seen each other for 8 years.

Hedgehoginthefog · 25/01/2019 15:07

Obviously someone who you gave your number to once, they saved it under your name and picked the wrong one to call. Might be someone whose number you never had, or someone you have deleted from your contacts.

PigletJohn · 25/01/2019 15:07

you can check phone no's on tellows.co.uk

If they are a repeat scammer they will already be listed.

you can also put in a comment about strange callers.

If you are on BT you can block them on "call protect" free (I expect other phone co.s have something similar).

I once had a call from some scammer, I forget what it was about, and when I harangued them, they said "Is that Mr Piglet of 24 Oldburton Street?" (not my address) and pretended they'd made an innocent mistake.

babysharkah · 25/01/2019 16:04

Why on earth did you text them?

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 25/01/2019 16:43

I've text them and asked them but no response...

Weird!

Yep, texting a wrong number because you require further explanation is definitely weird!

What on earth did your text say? Unless you have a unique name it’s not impossible that they tried to call someone with the same first name and misdialled.

michaeladams · 26/01/2019 05:41

I never answer calls if I'm not familiar with the numbers. It's better to ignore those calls, or look them up on Google or sites like whycall.me and just block them immediately if you find any reports filed under those numbers.

PigletJohn · 26/01/2019 09:54

often scammers send a fake number, so you may call or text a non-existent or innocent person whose number has been used.

Doyoumind · 26/01/2019 10:00

Are you sure they didn't go through to your voicemail when they rang and hear your name then?

KisstoryMisstory · 26/01/2019 12:11

It's my friend's daughter who inherited her old iPhone when she got a new one. She tried to call her friend who had the same fairly unusual band but got me instead. Had a lovely chat with her yesterday so I'm glad I texted as weird as some think that was! I just wanted to know where they got my number from...

@KisstoryMisstory do you ever buy anything online where you fill in a contact number?

Anywhere you type your number it can get sold on and on and on.
