Head down, a** up?

Dh and I have been having a conversation with dd about studying for exams. She has not been applying herself so I was saying she needs to put down the phone and get working hard if she wants to see results. I used the phrase “head down, a** up” meaning get working hard and forget all distractions. I’ve heard it many times in my 40 years and that’s what it’s always meant.

When dd left the room dh said “you need to stop saying that”. I asked why and he informs me they’re the lyrics to a song with sexual meaning. I looked it up and it is.

I feel weird now as dd is 18 and probably knows this song and though I’m pretty sure she knows that’s not what I’m talking about it’s just left me feeling bothered.

AIBU to think this was actually a phrase that means exactly what I think long before it became a song with another meaning?

I have heard "keep your head down" but "head down, ass up" that's the way we like to fuck! Is definitely a sexual meaning Grin

PurpleDaisies · 25/01/2019 01:11

Head down - revision.

Head down, arse up - sex.

PurpleRobe · 25/01/2019 01:12

I've only ever heard of it in a sexual context. Usually in songs

RavenLG · 25/01/2019 01:12

It would only ever mean doggy style to me.

CandleConcerto · 25/01/2019 01:12

Head, no?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 25/01/2019 01:12

It’s sexual; it’s never been a normal phrase. YABU.

NameChangerAmI · 25/01/2019 01:12

I've never heard the expression or the song, but I can think of no other context for the meaning of that saying, than a sexual one.

moita · 25/01/2019 01:13

I've never head the 'arse up' bit HmmShock I hope you haven't been saying that to colleagues etc Grin

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 25/01/2019 01:13

I can’t see it as anything other than sexual. Why else would your arse be up?

notangelinajolie · 25/01/2019 01:15

Head down. Yes.
Arse up. Definitely not.

Fightingfit2019 · 25/01/2019 01:15

.... that’s the way I like to f**k

As soon as I read the title I said this in my head.

I’m 38, so almost the same age as you, how could you not sing that in your head when you said it??

Thisisthelaststraw · 25/01/2019 01:15

Oh my god! I was sure loads would come back saying “yeah, you’re right, I’ve always thought that’s what it meant”.

I’m feel awful. Poor dd!

I’ll have to mention it tomorrow in a jokey way and NEVER say it again.

SHIT!! Angry

I never heard it before but you may earn kudos when DD tells her peers tomorrow Blush
They'll all be dashing round to your house to do revision Grin

SneakyGremlins · 25/01/2019 01:18

I was thinking this was a sexual version of heads down thumbs up...

Fightingfit2019 · 25/01/2019 01:19

Sorry but how does ‘head down, arse up’ have any meaning to working? I get the head down for working, but arse up?

Someone explain it to me please!

Thisisthelaststraw · 25/01/2019 01:22

I’ve never even heard the song. She knew it but it must be relatively new as I’ve said it before over the years and he’s never said anything to me.

And now one of you has made me realise I have definitely said it in work too.

I’m sooooo embarrassed Blush

I wouldn’t mind but I’m not a prude or anything. I just never made the connection because it’s something I’ve heard for years and it ONLY ever meant what I thought.

In my desperate search on google to find MY meaning I did find, among the hundreds of bloody song lyric pages, a quote from a book called “on thin ice” (I think about Everest) in which the writer says the phrase in the context which I would use it.

Anyway, safe to say I will never, ever say it again!

First line should read “dh knew it...”

Oh dear OP Shock

I'm 37 and that song was doing the rounds when I was your DD's age.

She may never have heard the song but she's probably already told all her mates what you suggested to help her study Grin

Monty27 · 25/01/2019 01:31

Calm down OP. Maybe the lyricist of the song took it from there too. They aren't always original words in songs, it gets them to sound intelligent.
So, here's your strategy; find out the origin of the phrase and explain it to DH and DD, with a sideward glance and a flick of the hair because you are mortally wounded at their assumption.
gets googling

Thisisthelaststraw · 25/01/2019 01:31

I’m sure I’m the laughing stock of snapchat or watsapp or whatever Blush

Ah feck it, Ye live and learn. Dh thinks it’s hilarious!

I’ve found the reference I mentioned about the book but I can’t link. Going to see if I can post a picture..
