Head down, a** up?

Dh and I have been having a conversation with dd about studying for exams. She has not been applying herself so I was saying she needs to put down the phone and get working hard if she wants to see results. I used the phrase “head down, a** up” meaning get working hard and forget all distractions. I’ve heard it many times in my 40 years and that’s what it’s always meant.

When dd left the room dh said “you need to stop saying that”. I asked why and he informs me they’re the lyrics to a song with sexual meaning. I looked it up and it is.

I feel weird now as dd is 18 and probably knows this song and though I’m pretty sure she knows that’s not what I’m talking about it’s just left me feeling bothered.

AIBU to think this was actually a phrase that means exactly what I think long before it became a song with another meaning?

Head down - crack on

Fine. But I can’t see how ‘head down, arse up’ could possibly have any other meaning than a sexual one!

Don’t worry OP, it’s a rite of passage. I cringe every time my mum calls the cupboard under her stairs a ‘glory hole’ Confused

Frankenterfer · 25/01/2019 07:28

Head down, bum up = work hard / concentrate. I'm not British.

SluggishSnail · 25/01/2019 07:56

I cringe every time my mum calls the cupboard under her stairs a ‘glory hole’

That's hilarious!

Unhomme · 25/01/2019 08:04

I've heard 'head down, bum up' as a phrase for working hard.

'Face down, arse up is the sexual position...

Bluewidow · 25/01/2019 08:09

Goodness your overacting aren’t you. She’s 18 so sure she’s heard sexual references before and she’s surely as you say old enough to know what you were actually referring too. I don’t think will interpret that as forget revision and go have sex.

Sproutsandall · 25/01/2019 08:18

My granny used to call the cupboard under the stairs a glory hole too. It’s a perfectly cromulent expression. Grin

Well, when I saw your thread I presumed you had a sexual problem, so therein lies your answer.

Weetabixandshreddies · 25/01/2019 08:43

When I did maternity rotation as a student midwives often used that expression to describe a baby in cephalic presentation ie not breech but in the "right" position for birth.

whiteworld · 25/01/2019 08:45

Head down - revision.
Head down, arse up - sex.

This.

I've never heard the phrase 'head down/arse up' (UK).

Belindabelle · 25/01/2019 08:47

I am almost 50 and have been hearing this phrase my whole life.

“Heid doon erse up” to quote my Scottish granny.

Wishiwasincornwall · 25/01/2019 08:48

I'm another one with a Nan having a glory hole. Grin

"getting your head down" to me means to work hard but confusingly it also means going to sleep.

Belindabelle · 25/01/2019 08:48

Pretty certain she was talking about hard work and not anal.

MsCupcake · 25/01/2019 08:51

Yup, heard this as a youngster in a very rural area where everyone worked ‘on the land’... “Heads down, arses up, the gaffers coming”

Mind you now you have all pointed out the alternative meaning, even that sounds a bit suspect 😆

MawkishTwaddle · 25/01/2019 08:59

We had a glory hole, too.

Innocent times.

Notreallyhappy · 25/01/2019 09:00

That phrase always meant to work hard get on with it, until the job was done...
My oh still say it..head down arse up and chuck on until your nose bleeds....

Drogosnextwife · 25/01/2019 09:22

😂 OP I hope you haven't been saying that yo too many people.

UrsulaPandress · 25/01/2019 09:35

And back passages.

Pemba · 25/01/2019 09:41

Never heard that expression in over 50 years of living in the UK. Head down, to mean working/studying hard, yes. Also 'get your head down' to mean try to get some sleep.

But once you bring arses into it, sorry but sexual connotations start popping into my mind, even though I've never heard of the song pps were quoting. Maybe I have a filthy mind.

As for the expression 'glory hole', stop laughing at your elderly relatives people! I first heard of it long ago as an expression for a cupboard or tiny tucked away room, maybe where junk was stored. I think the sexual meaning is a very modern hijacking of the term. And eww!

lastqueenofscotland · 25/01/2019 09:48

I think your thinking of “chin up eyes down”
Head down arse up is defo shagging

SpiritedLondon · 25/01/2019 09:52

A glory hole IS a cupboard or tiny tucked away room - generally in a sex shop or other establishment of “adult entertainment “ conveniently adapted with holes at appropriate height for men to insert their penises for their neighbours delight!!!!!!!

On another note.... my DM (mid 70s) when irritated by something will say “ It’s a load of dogs bollocks” despite the fact we have repeatedly told her the meaning of that expression. It’s an endearing quirk surely? Grin

Unfinishedkitchen · 25/01/2019 09:54

Cringing for everyone involved. As soon as I saw the title I filled in the blanks...’that’s the way I like to fuck’.

Elfinablender · 25/01/2019 09:54

I've heard 'head down, ass up' meaning to concentrate on the task in hand.

7Days · 25/01/2019 09:59

Head down arse up means work hard in Ireland, especially in the bog. It's the only way to foot turf
