Norovirus - I’m next aren’t I

DD age 3 has been up puking, all of her dinner by looks of it. 2 forceful pukes and loads of animated chat in between and she’s now sleeping. Myself, DH and DM all looked after her and did the initial wave of clean up. She puked on me and I’ve been scrubbing carpets, washing clothes and cuddling DD. Now bfing DD 4 months. We’ve not had a puking bug since DD1 was under a year. Is there any chance that the rest of us won’t catch it? How can I protect the baby? AIBU to feel a total sense of doom?!!

I understand the sense of doom, and I only have one piece of advice. SB probiotics.

Child sick back later

BreakfastAtLitanies · 24/01/2019 02:03

It's not necessarily noro!! Just send someone else in to clean it next time Grin

Merename · 24/01/2019 02:06

Your kid is sick too? Oh dear. DD has been taking optibac probiotics recently after having had antibiotics for an ear infection a few wks back. Do you mean to help recover or prevent? I have been on a probiotic too for a few wks after antibiotics as well. Babe now fed and down, DD downstairs with DM but feel like I can’t sleep as should be with her...

This is what I wanted to hear Breakfast...is there a way to tell between random kid sick and noro?

OP posts:
Merename · 24/01/2019 02:14

I should add she just started nursery this week...boak

OP posts:
lborgia · 24/01/2019 02:42

Sorry, not sure what that was...

Anyway, pre-emptive probiotics, something like this - www.chemistdirect.co.uk/optibac-probiotics-saccharomyces-boulardii/prd-mn

There may be loads of other brands, I'm in Oz and for some reason am finding it difficult to find a UK brand.

So this, plus a multi strain probiotic. My son's gastroenterologist recommended the high- quality multi strain version in the morning and midday, and then the sb in the evening.

That might be overload because we were really sick, but I took a similar combo when on a big trek. Everyone else (14 people) got d and v, I didn't.

Anyway, up to you obviously, but that's my fix!

lborgia · 24/01/2019 02:46

Oh, and try as hard as you can to ignore the guilt... you will fight everything off far better with sleep.

Eek, one more thing, if you get sick, and keep bfding, you can dehydrate terribly quickly. Make sure you have even a mini box of formula available - I ended up on a drip for similar and way from my first son for 8 hours.

Merename · 24/01/2019 14:12

Thanks so much @Iborgia, I didn’t have energy to reply but your words brought me comfort in the night. DD wasn’t sick again but I slept poorly and was up with baby. No sign of anyone else with it yet but I don’t feel great after lunch, hard to tell if that’s fatigue or what.

Will keep on with the probiotics for us all, that’s helpful to know. The brand you posted is the one we have, except for babies and kids. I’ve been taking a multi one but I’ll check for SB.

Hopefully it’s just one of these things kids do. Have just hired a carpet cleaner as the room stinks 😷

lborgia · 25/01/2019 00:23

Oh I remember so vividly, it's awful. My kids are much bigger now, and aft leeway toy can keep them quarantined more easily.. hope you're not the one who will be getting round with the carpet cleaner?!

Merename · 25/01/2019 09:08

Yes DH was at work so I had to, bedroom was horrible. Have made it though night with no pukes so been nearly 36hrs since exposed now, feel a bit safer! And baby slept unusually well so I have caught up on sleep too. Flowers to all those who have these bugs this winter Smile

thaegumathteth · 25/01/2019 09:16

If it’s any comfort. Dd puked EVERYWHERE last week: dh and I both cleaned up and sat with her etc. She was really ill, puking non stop and high temp etc. I was CONVINCED we’d all get it but hoped ds would avoid it as we’d kept them apart at the time of the puking.

Fingers crossed (x100000000) none of us have caught it. I am AMAZED.

Use bleach to clean, wash hands allllll the time and put toilet lid down when flushing. I don’t think there’s much else you can do.

Merename · 25/01/2019 14:36

Thanks @theagumathteth, it is a comfort to know it’s possible. I still feel a little queasy and tired, I don’t know if it’s possible to have a touch of the virus but fighting it off. Whatever, I’m so grateful not to be sick. This has made me realise I’ve become quite anxious about vomiting - barely ever puked in my life until I had kids and it’s now at least once a year!!

easyandy101 · 25/01/2019 15:10

I had noro (and puked all over the wall in the bedroom) and my partner didn't get it.

WaxMyrtle · 25/01/2019 17:58

Both my D.C. had Noro virus last month one after the other. They were really ill.

One of them was sick all over me. I had to clean diarrhoea out of the carpet because the other was so ill they didn’t make it to the bathroom.

I cleaned out copious numbers of sick bowls. Washed sheets and stripped off soiled PJs.

I fully expected to get it.

Not a sausage. Neither DH or I got it.

Merename · 26/01/2019 05:43

Still no pukes and over 48hrs now. Yayyyy!!! Thanks all Smile

Goposie · 26/01/2019 05:45

I often avoid getting sick after my children. I think my immunity has built up!

Merename · 26/01/2019 21:11

So been feeling rough for 3 or 4 hrs and now started with the squits. Nearly 72hrs later. at least just got baby down so hopefully got several hours to get the worst of it over before she needs me. There’s not much I can do to minimise the risk to her is there? I’m sleeping in a separate room and DH with her, hand washing etc. Is a puking bug serious for a 4 month old?

I can reccomend the following: anyone with norovirus, clean after poo/vommit using disposable gloves. Discard into bin. Whatever you do dont let your hands come into contact with the vommit/poop. Not as easy as you think with little ones.

Wash infected clothes at 60c

I had norovirus this week. No ones caught it yet 😬

Queenofselfdoubt · 26/01/2019 21:26

This big is horrible for babies. Risk of dehydration. Best of luck 💖

Queenofselfdoubt · 26/01/2019 21:26

*bug

Prometheus · 26/01/2019 21:30

Why does everyone label any run of the mill vomiting bug as norovirus???? There are hundreds, maybe thousands of bugs that cause vomiting. Not very many of them are as contagious or severe as noro. Your kid has just picked up a 24 hour vomiting bug from school. Happens all the time.

Merename · 26/01/2019 21:47

Alright Prometheus, maybe it happens all the time but it’s still grim and unpleasant when it’s you. I thought norovirus was the name for most 24 hr puking bugs in winter, but maybe it’s not, don’t really care right now...

OP posts:
brownmoose · 26/01/2019 21:57

Noro is a particularly aggressive strain OP, it would be mostly unrelenting vomiting and you would 'know'

Sounds like a tummy bug, but I hope your little one gets better soon!

As a side, my son had noro, ended up in hospital and anti emetics and no one else caught it, there is deffo hope ☺️

babyinthacorner · 26/01/2019 22:09

We’ve had a sick bug going round school recently. Half of our staff team was off sick at one point. Advice from my pharmacist friend was to wash hands as often as possible and follow up with anti-bac gel afterwards.
I’m sure I read somewhere that it was airborne though... Anyway, it sucks. Hope you’re better soon, OP.

donajimena · 26/01/2019 22:14

Its not airborne unless someone is puking droplets near you. Its spread through contact either with vomit or faeces. You can also transmit it through preparing food with unclean hands and pick it up from surfaces.
