Norovirus - I’m next aren’t I

DD age 3 has been up puking, all of her dinner by looks of it. 2 forceful pukes and loads of animated chat in between and she’s now sleeping. Myself, DH and DM all looked after her and did the initial wave of clean up. She puked on me and I’ve been scrubbing carpets, washing clothes and cuddling DD. Now bfing DD 4 months. We’ve not had a puking bug since DD1 was under a year. Is there any chance that the rest of us won’t catch it? How can I protect the baby? AIBU to feel a total sense of doom?!!

When I had noro - I was 21 and home
for Christmas- my DM thought I was drying and called an ambulance (she wasn’t being irresponsible- I was literally unconscious - apparently can happen when you vomit incredibly forcefully).

I was projectile vomiting and falling unconscious every time I vomited. It was horrendous. Then the shits started. I don’t remember too much tbh- and am rather glad. It went on at that level for 4 days. Our family friend is a nurse and brought rehydration stuff, mouth swabs, gave my mum a rehydration plan etc etc

Aftwr a week of this and a few days rest, was Christmas Day and the very sight of food knocked me off my feet and Christmas was ruined.

I’ve since had Campylobacter at christmas, and dysentery. Noro was the worst, by a long stretch.

Sorry- that was to say no- most likely not noro but it’s still nasty Confused hope you feel better soon and baby is okay.

If you’re breastfeeding baby is likely to have some protection due to antibodies in your breast milk- and you may recover faster than you would otherwise too (as long as you stay hydrated!)

Good luck!

Ugh. Puking or shitting every 10 mins and afraid to leave the bathroom. Feels like most of it is out so hopefully not last much longer. Thanks for your kindness everyone, I sent DH away to try to prevent him getting it so it’s a bit lonely shivering in the bathroom Sad

Oh no, only just caught up on this. Hopefully by now you're over the worst and being looked after!

Merename · 27/01/2019 16:32

Thank you. Looks like DH is about to start with it so not as much looking after as I’d have hoped! Was more intense than I expected given DDs symptoms, she didn’t have a temp but I had all the chills and aches along with d&v. If we can keep baby from getting it thats the main thing.

It isn't always a given that you will catch the norovirus because you've been in contact with it. Some people, myself included, are naturally immune. Why? I don't really understand tbh,it's something to do with the chemicals in your gut (I think!). I've been in very close contact with it 6 times over the last 10 years,i.e. I was lving with the person who had it,was looking after them and clearing up after them Envy (not envy!). And not once did I go down ith it. I consider myself very lucky.

CheeseAndOnonIceCream · 27/01/2019 17:02

Oh sorry OP,just seen your last post saying you have it. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

OneStepSideways · 27/01/2019 17:08

Hope you feel better soon! It really is awful. I've had it twice in the last year (caught from nursery and work!) Last time I felt like I was dying. But then the nausea and shakes just stopped and the D stopped a few hours later. It can leave as fast as it starts.

Are you breastfeeding the baby? They get some immunity from your milk. If baby gets it just keep giving milk/water and monitor for signs of dehydration (dry nappies, sunken eyes) but hopefully she'll be fine.

This too shall pass Flowers

Merename · 27/01/2019 17:47

Thank you both. Yes breastfeeding so hoping that she’s getting enough antibodies to prevent it. She’s so wee and we’re in such close contact all the time. My older one has avoided in the past when I was feeding her so fingers crossed. There’s worse things though, in a few days we’ll be forgetting all about it.

Aaaargh you poor things...we have had this quite often since having kids BUT every time we have had it the child I have been breastfeeding hasn’t got it so hopefully your baby will be fine

Merename · 28/01/2019 20:52

Thank you @HenSolo. I wasn’t prepared for the disease carrying capacity of kids!! But baby is still fine thankfully. I still haven’t stopped with symptoms though, it’s been really rough.
