to think ‘turn off your f’ing fog light!’.

I am fed up with being dazzled by people who think that the slightest bit of fog means you should put your fog lights on, even if you can see the lights of a car 20 cars ahead.

And don’t get me started on people who sit on their brake at traffic lights...

And relax...

Round here it’s the fuckwits that don’t fully defrost their windscreen so they’re peering out of a tiny hole in the ice ..

Whisky2014 · 25/01/2019 10:16

My car doesnt have front fog lights. Only the rear fog light is a legal requirement. And its a 2015 car so not a rust bucket!

aintnothinbutagstring · 25/01/2019 10:26

I drive an automatic, I don't use handbrake or parking brake except when I've stopped and parked. Too much fannying around in stop start traffic.

almondfinger · 25/01/2019 13:06

6 lights on the front. It may have been a Nissan Juke. Lights all over the place on those.

Have starting using my auto handbrake more after this thread more due to the shunting potential of the car behind if it hit me. I wasnt aware this will help with preventing me go into the car in front. Makes perfect sense.

Tried looking for the adjust option on the lights yesterday, couldnt find it. Did watch a little video about how my lights adjust to bends, hills, etc. I'm aware BMW drivers are not the most liked on the road but I love my car and it's fancy lights Grin.

I also paid attention to the traffic this morning and it seems pretty much everyone around here sits on the brake in stopped traffic, automatic or manual.

Racecardriver · 25/01/2019 13:09

Can we extend this to anyone who uses anything more than side lights in daylight. If it is light enough to see the road without headlights you don’t need them because you are already visible by virtue of being on the road idiot.

Whisky2014 · 25/01/2019 13:14

Headlights are not dazzling and are ok to use during the day...
In Canada It's law to have them on all the.time because it Increases visibility to other cars and pedestrians.

Craft1905 · 25/01/2019 13:18

YANBU. At all. Anyone who has their fog lights on when visibility is more than a hundred yards (also known as ‘pretty dense fog’) should lose their license.

Anyone who can't spell licence should lose their licence.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/01/2019 15:03

“Anyone who can't spell licence should lose their licence.”

Both spellings are correct but autocorrect on my phone has a mind of its own.

Craft1905 · 25/01/2019 16:57

“Anyone who can't spell licence should lose their licence.”

Both spellings are correct

No they are not. In the UK it's licence.

knittingdad · 25/01/2019 17:16

I've never found brake lights or indicators dazzling on other cars so I never considered that my use of them at lights might cause problems for others. I will have to rethink what I do.

I am surprised at the very bright "normal" lights on newer cars as I'd assumed that there would have been a standard to ensure that dipped lights wouldn't dazzle other road users, but if there is it isn't effective.

R3b3kah · 25/01/2019 17:20

I’m guilty of having my foot on the break, only because I have a zafira so the handbreak can be a little difficult to put back down and due to a painful cyst I don’t bother unless I’m sat in traffic... I can’t wait to get a new car - I’m dreaming of the day Grin

Onecutefox · 25/01/2019 17:20

Anyone who can't spell licence should lose their licence.
That's a bit extreme. I bet you're perfect in everything.

EggysMom · 25/01/2019 17:25

On Tuesday it was really foggy here, cue the fog lights (quite appropriate).

On Wednesday it was no longer foggy. But most people had forgotten to switch off their fog lights from the day before ...

It seems it's far easier to see the weather and switch something on, than to notice the absence of weather and think to switch something off. Despite the warning light on the dash, to which I also think people are oblivious.

ZogTheOrangeDragon · 25/01/2019 17:34

I’ve never been dazzled by brake lights being on. Are there extra bright brake lights like the blinding headlights that you can now get?

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2019 17:40

While 'license' as a noun is tolerable as it's the correct US spelling, would it be wrong to wish for the handbrakes of those who can't spell handbrake to break? (in the safe engaged position, obv). I rarely read motoring journalism but once came across a piece in a newspaper which used 'breaks' throughout ... yup, it was the Grauniad. Grin

TheCrowFromBelow · 25/01/2019 18:03

I have new car and the front fog lights just come on automatically when I turn a corner.
They came on yesterday as well when it was wasn’t foggy.
it isn’t me, it’s my car!

MiddleClassPerm · 25/01/2019 18:09

I have to say I do put my fog lights on when it's not foggy but only when a car is right up my arse. It seems to work as everytime I've done it the car has backed off Smile

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 25/01/2019 18:15

I disagree.
Side lights are bugger all use. You will see the car before you see the pin prick of light from Sidelights.
Properly adjusted dipped headlights make a car visible and should always be used if it is raining.

QuestionableMouse · 25/01/2019 18:26

I have automatic lights so if anyone is blinded by a big green Zafira Tourer I'm sorry.

ImSooooooCold · 25/01/2019 22:31

I tend to put my back fog light on if someone is driving up my a**s because they usually back away ....

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/01/2019 22:47

@Craft1905

No they are not. In the UK it's licence.

Of course, you are assuming I am in the UK. Either way, please do accept my most sincere apologies for inadvertently allowing my US- phone to autocorrect to the US spelling a word which formed part of my response to a post which was completely unrelated to grammar or spelling, international or otherwise

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/01/2019 22:51

I'm pretty damn sure that car designers would ensure that headlights work perfectly well on dark country roads. Maybe its time to accept that you really need to wear glasses whilst driving...maybe.

Depends on the car. I used to have a little sporty thing and I swear the person who designed it never drove one at all, and certainly not in the dark . The headlights were fecking useless - I'd have been better off sticking a tealight in each socket than plugging in a bulb. That's not an excuse to drive with full beams on (I didn't!) but some cars just really ARE that badly designed.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2019 23:49

The rather sad thing about car headlights is that there is a technical solution which would allow brighter lights yet without dazzling oncoming cars.

Newsflash. Not everyone is in the UK

Try reading some statistics before calling other people idiots.

Or using some common sense. It’s often perfectly possible to see the road without your head lights on at night, going by your reasoning we could just turn them off. 🙄
