to think ‘turn off your f’ing fog light!’.

I am fed up with being dazzled by people who think that the slightest bit of fog means you should put your fog lights on, even if you can see the lights of a car 20 cars ahead.

And don’t get me started on people who sit on their brake at traffic lights...

And relax...

Where do I vote about the public flogging for cars on full beams?

borntobequiet · 24/01/2019 10:42

And your full beams, please. Why do you have them both on at the same time anyway?

AdobeWanKenobi · 24/01/2019 10:46

Depending on the car stop start can be disabled. I disable it on mine, drives me nuts.

To this I shall also add, people who think DRL's = Side lights. Yes, they might be at the front but at the back you're in darkness. If in doubt put some bloody lights on.

smurfmonkey · 24/01/2019 10:49

This. Irritates the hell out of me and shows complete ignorance to driving conditions and other road users.

CantWaitToRetire · 24/01/2019 10:49

Seeing as we're having a whinge Grin I'm going to extend it a bit and mention pedestrians. I have a personal hate for pedestrians who dress completely in black - black boots/shoes, black trousers, black coat with the hood up - which makes them almost invisible in the dark - and then they suddenly dart across the road without looking for traffic.

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 24/01/2019 10:53

Ooh thanks, I shall have a look Petulia - although Mercedes seem to be too cool for paper manuals nowadays and instead I find everything I need to know about how to change things on my car from YouTube.

Would be good if I could stop getting irate when people unintentionally flash me - I never use full beam even driving down the dark country roads where I live as I’m sure I was told that it full beam attracts wildlife and unintentionally hitting Bambi or Thumper is really the last thing I need....

juneau · 24/01/2019 10:53

People who 'sit on the their brakes at traffic lights' are probably driving automatics. If you're in a manual you put it in neutral and you can take your foot off the brake, in an automatic you foot is either on the accelerator or the brake and at traffic lights it's the latter!

Sparklingbrook · 24/01/2019 10:57

The HIghway Code needs rewriting for automatic drivers!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2019 11:03

People are always flashing me as if to say 'turn your headlights off', I flash back to say 'you thought that was bad, check them out in their full glory'. I suffer more and more from night blindness so I am aware of how difficult it must be coming towards me on a small country road.

Flashing your lights to prove to a random motorist that your overbright beams aren't your fault is an extremely dickish thing to do.Hmm you're aware they're problematic, why the heck make it worse?Confused. Have you checked they're at the correct angle for your normal loading?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2019 11:09

Oh - I'd somehow missed 'We have them adjusted to point more at the road, may need to recheck that. '. Right. Yes, do that and whatever the outcome don't use your flash to reprimand people who genuinely think you're on full beam.

Flashing people at night to say 'thank you' is another bloody irritating thing to do.

The Highway Code states: 110 - Flashing headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users.

Catsize · 25/01/2019 07:19

When I've driven an automatic, I've put it into 'P' at lights and things. Is that wrong? 🤔

Surfskatefamily · 25/01/2019 07:24

Then bloody LED headlights now too! Hate driving in the dark

missbattenburg · 25/01/2019 07:34

People who don't use fog lights when it's thick fog.

People who do use them when there is little or no fog.

Xenon lights.

People who don't use lights when the visibility is poor.

People who leave full beams in for too long or don't switch them off at all.

People behind me with full beams on.

They all give me angry feelings.

Dothehappydance · 25/01/2019 07:39

Auto driver too, so I need to sit on the brake. I will at times put it into neutral but then it takes longer to pull away.

I always turn my engine off at the level crossing though.

Part of my commute is dark country roads, those led lights are horrible.

But my mantra is 'See and be seen'.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 25/01/2019 07:46

The other evening I passed a car with 6 different lights on on the front of it
Nissan Juke?

Thecabbageassasin · 25/01/2019 07:51

Don’t mind the brake lights, it’s the ones that leave their indicators/ hazards lights on whilst waiting for the lights, or other movement when stationary. Half the time they’re bloody well sat in a right or left turning lane anyway. totally unnecessary and very inconsiderate of the person waiting behind you.

Whatthefunk · 25/01/2019 07:51

People who have their headlights set too high, drive me crazy! If you're behind me, and the back of my head is illuminated, then they need adjusting Angry

Slamadramafamalam · 25/01/2019 08:16

@Onecutefox I don't know when you took your driving test but now learners are instructed to apply handbrake at traffic lights in order to [if the car behind hits you] avoid getting shunted into the car in front.

borntobequiet · 25/01/2019 08:24

Today on way to work I encountered:
A large commercial vehicle with both fog lights and beams on (very light mist at the time)
A cyclist dressed entirely in dark colours with only a reflector on the back of the bike
Two cars who forgot they had beams on, one oncoming, one behind me
One car with offside headlight aligned to dazzle oncoming motorists
One dickhead who overtook me in a 30 zone going through a village
In same village a woman walking her dog off the lead, said dog felt it more fun to amble along in the gutter rather than on the verge

I of course drove perfectly and showed consideration for all other road users.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/01/2019 08:47

I've yet to be dazzled by fog lights but regularly (almost don't) see cars without lights on. Medium to heavy fog yesterday... Yes it's a town and yes visibility was OK if you were close but driving involves anticipating so put your freaking lights on to make it easy to see you. Grr.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/01/2019 08:51

now learners are instructed to apply handbrake at traffic lights in order to [if the car behind hits you] avoid getting shunted into the car in front

This was also the case when I took my test in 1987.

However I seem to remember (from a defensive driving course), the advice if you are the last car in a queue to apply handbrake and footbrake, until there are a couple of cars behind you, then take your foot off. This is to increase your visibility as stationary traffic.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2019 08:56

I drive an auto with stop/start so keep my foot on the brake at the lights.

Arkengarthdale · 25/01/2019 09:15

I put my auto into neutral and put the electronic handbrake on at lights so as not to dazzle the person behind with brake lights. And yy to poster who mentioned leaving indicators flashing while waiting in a queue for lights to change - you're dazzling me !

Also so many people don't put their lights on in poor visibility during the day. Why drive a fog coloured car in fog with no lights? Do they not struggle to see similar idiots coming the other way with no lights and realise how hard it is to see them?

And yes, the number of people who seem to rely on their running lights without realising that there are no lights at the rear of the car. Witnessed a near miss the other day when a faster vehicle came up behind a car with no lights in very poor visibility. Bet his trousers needing changing after that!!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2019 09:21

Autos clearly need 'automatic' handbrakes - my manual car has this, you just press the foot brake firmly when stationary and it engages the 'handbrake', so you can take your foot off it. It disengages automatically when you move off.

I don't know when you took your driving test but now learners are instructed to apply handbrake at traffic lights in order to [if the car behind hits you] avoid getting shunted into the car in front.

I remember being told this.... about 30 years ago. It's not new advice.Confused

propertywoe · 25/01/2019 09:34

When I drove an automatic it was putting it into P that would get beeps and hand gestures because the delay in pulling away. I had never even given brake lights and Automatics a thought until I drove one.
