Unfortunately I cannot tell which was the nicest compliment I ever got because I could not stay anonymous but I would like to hear yours.

"Going to bed with (ex -p) was like going shopping at Tescos , going to bed with you is like going shopping at Harrods" ...preen...reader i believed her 😀

I was once sitting next to an elderly chap on a plane and we spent a long time talking. He became very emotional and told me I reminded him very much of his daughter who’d died as a young child. He said “It’s been wonderful meeting you - if my girl had lived, she would have been just like you - lovely.” He bought me a bottle of perfume and said he wanted to treat me to something nice as he wished he could do these things for his daughter. Such a sweet, gentle man. Sad

Been with dh for 35 years, and at the weekend he gave me a hug and said ‘You’re still a lovely woman to be married to’.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 23/01/2019 23:01

First time my Mum looked after my DS for a weekend when he was about 2. I called while we were away to check in and speak to DS. My Mum sounded so giddy at how much she was enjoying lookig after him, how much fun there were having and was a wonderful, happy and confident boy he was. She said "I truely believe that behind a child like that is brilliant parents. He's an absolute credit to you". My Mum is not one for dishing out compliments easily so it meant so much.

A couple of weeks ago I overheard that same DS, now aged 10, singing a made up song to himself in his room. The words I heard and will stay with me were: "My parent are really cool"...blah blah blah! That was the best compliment ever and he doesn't even know I heard it!

MrsWillGardner · 23/01/2019 23:02

My closest friend told me she was proud of me. I will always remember her saying that to me.

FlippingEggs · 23/01/2019 23:02

Awww, some lovely things here.

From the opposite sex: a guy told me I was knuckle bitingly pretty.

I am a bit of a lump so that was nice to hear.

Peepingsnowdrops · 23/01/2019 23:04

Two stick out
: a parent told me I changed their child's life beyond recognition (I used to be a primary teacher) and my very stiff upper lip father in law told me I was the best mother he could ever ask for his grandchildren

FloppyRagdoll · 23/01/2019 23:06

After a funeral I had conducted, the widow said 'You put him away braw'.

TillyMint81 · 23/01/2019 23:06

I had a haemorrhage after I had my second child. During the mad rush of medical staff trying to check for retained placenta this angel of a man calmly appeared, took hold of my arm and slid a needle into the vein in the crook of my arm. He then uttered the words 'oo, you've got lovely veins'
Slightly woozy from blood loss I turned to my partner and said, in an accusing tone, 'you've never said that to me' GrinBlush

He was the calm in the storm and chatted to us both for a bit longer before vanishing into the night. -or probably just moving on the next patient-

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 23/01/2019 23:06

Aw! Lovely thread.

I was once told "do you know, you're actually very pretty". slightly marred by the tone of surprise.

BeaLola · 23/01/2019 23:07

My son about 6 months after we adopted him telling me that I was his “real Mummy as he loved me so much it made me REAL “ like the skin horse in the Velveteen Rabbit story.

My lovely Dsd telling me the other week at a funeral they I had never let him down

ScienceIsTruth · 23/01/2019 23:11

Wow, some of these have brought a lump to my throat. You're very lucky.
Must be wonderful to have someone say something lovely, just because (ie, for no gain).

Itsnotalwaysfair · 23/01/2019 23:17

Thank you for making life worth living.
From DH

It sounds a bit intense but he meant it in a I enjoy being with you way apparently.

scaryteacher · 23/01/2019 23:18

Two really, 'will you marry me?' from dh still ranks as one of the best compliments ever. Ds calls me 'formidable' in both the English and French meanings of the word.

Thesmallthings · 23/01/2019 23:18

That I smelt like strawberry's and happiness- said randomly by my df in bed one night.

Sparklesocks · 23/01/2019 23:21

Someone at work once said I had a ‘calming presence’, which has stayed with me as I often feel flappy/out of control/blue arsed fly, so it’s nice they felt differently!

disneyspendingmoney · 23/01/2019 23:23

Thank you for understanding with a hug
.
Said to me by a homeless elderly man who was on the verge of serious self harm. I spent an hour or so listening to him a real actual shoulder to cry on and encouraged him to seek help and go to the crisis team.

Whenever I see him now he smiles at me and waves hello a bit happier than when we first met.

ninalovesdragons · 23/01/2019 23:23

My friend said another friend had said when seeing me care for a dying animal (that was not mine but had been abandoned) "if I was a pet I'd want Nina to be my mummy"

Sounds silly but that meant a lot when I was sat crying over the poorly animal in his last moments wondering if I was crazy

Decemberly · 23/01/2019 23:24

Someone once described me when I was 18 as having “a casual elegance”. I’d always thought of myself as tall and awkward, so that was lovely to hear.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 23/01/2019 23:25

Twice - once in my 20s, once in my 30s, (by two different people) I was told I looked like Diana Rigg.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 23:28

I can’t think of anything specific. When strangers go out of their way to compliment your sartorial choices that is always quite nice.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 23:29

Oh wait. I was once told by a friend that her mother fantasied about making plaster casts of my forearms. It is one of the most ridiculous compliments I’ve ever received. That was a good one.

yearinyearout · 23/01/2019 23:33

We went on a group holiday for two weeks with some friends and several of their family plus other friends we had never met. On the day we were leaving several of the new people we’d met complimented me on how lovely my kids were and what a pleasure it had been to spend the holiday with them. I was proud as punch.

Flairhead · 23/01/2019 23:40

A bit outing if anyone I've told about this IRL reads this but what the hell. I was having a bad day at work one day last year and was feeling a bit down. Then I bumped into a guy I only knew a little bit and said hi as I was passing. He stopped me and asked if I'd dyed my hair purple (it had been purple for a while but I'd refreshed it a couple of days before). I said yes, he replied "it's fucking awesome. I love it". Totally cheered me up and I was happy for the rest of the day!

MamaBear2181 · 23/01/2019 23:47

Aw, I love this thread!
My youngest son once said to me when he was about 6, “Mum did you know you’re as cuddly as a teddy bear and pretty as a flower?” And my eldest daughter told me when she was 5 ish that she didn’t like being apart from me at nighttime so could we share a room and get bunk beds please? They very much melted me.

And it’s not so much the verbalisation of this one that makes it so special to me, but the meaning of it. It might sound odd but my OH always takes in a deep breath of my scent when he comes home, apparently no one else smells like I do and it makes him feel warm and relaxed 😂
