to wish shops would cover up cake and bread

I was dying for a scone yesterday and my local grocers had some lovely floury looking ones on display. Sadly they weren't covered over and with the amount of people coughing and sneezing all over the place at the moment, I wasn't minded to buy one.

AIBU to wish shops would put some kind of plastic cover over cakes and breads and not leave them exposed for everyone to hack and sneeze around?

YANBU. Some people have no qualms about sneezing and coughing around them or letting their kids handle stuff and put it back. OK if it's vegetables or fruit that you will be cooking or washing, but for cake, bread or salads it's really off putting.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 16:31

YANBU hygiene aside it all gets stale if it isn’t properly covered.

Bigonesmallone3 · 23/01/2019 16:33

Yanbu, I wouldn't purchase one!

ALongHardWinter · 23/01/2019 16:52

Urgh I hate this too. A couple of years ago,I pointed out to a member of staff in a supermarket that a fly was crawling on the cinnamon swirls. She thanked me for telling her, then draped some plastic over them! I was Envy (not envy).

Burpsandfustles · 23/01/2019 16:56

Yep it's awful!

There must be some way to proctor them.
Even in waitrose in summer, a gazillion flies all over the pastries. I was told it was because customers wanted them exposed... I said.. Have those customers seen them covered in all these flies.. Seen mr Jones sneeze all over the them? Seen Johnny pick his nose then touch one!!

Hillarious · 23/01/2019 16:57

YABU to want to have a shop-bought scone. So easy to make and taste so much better.

finks100 · 23/01/2019 16:58

This annoys me too. There is a very lovely, trendy service station on the M5, it has beautiful looking cakes. I have never had one because they sit out all day, cover them!!!!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 23/01/2019 16:58

Right there with you OP - I never buy bread or cake, no matter how delicious looking - if it's 'nude'.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 23/01/2019 16:59

YANBU someone sneezed right next to the cheese twist I wanted in sainsburys today Sad twas heartbreaking to leave that little snot covered pastry

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/01/2019 17:01

I hate open bakery sections where you grab and bag your own. I see so many manky gits shoppers pick up loaf after loaf, give them a good squeeze (and occasional snif) before discarding them. Yuk!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 23/01/2019 17:01

Hillarious are you my MIL?! Some people don't like baking, not want to bake, can't be bothered , haven't got time - still like to eat cake though!

AGHHHH · 23/01/2019 17:05

Yanbu. Hate this.

viques · 23/01/2019 17:09

So agree I sometimes walk through borough market in London, there are some lovely stalls, but the market is an old Victorian building where generations of London pigeons have roosted on the iron girders. And they still do.......

TisConfusion · 23/01/2019 17:14

YANBU. Theres a newish coffee/cake place near me and the cakes look amazing...but they are all just out on the counter uncovered. Puts me right off.

whatsthepointthen · 23/01/2019 17:17

Makes me laugh the way people rave about
lidls bakery. Ive witnessed two really disgusting things in there so who knows what happens that I haven't witnessed!

One was a child dropping a doughnut and a man telling her to pick it up before anyone notices. The other time
was summer I went in and seen the most biggest black fly resting on one of the doughnuts. I dont touch the bakery aisle.

Nicebudget · 23/01/2019 17:18

Omg I know!!!!!
Why is this acceptable? It's awful.

SpringForEver · 23/01/2019 17:20

Lidl is bad for this, nothing is covered and the bakery is near the door so everyone passes it, people bunch up there as there is no space, so sleeves, sneezing, children, hems of coats and flies abound. But they provide tongs to pick it up, I can't see the point in the tongs given the germs that are already on it.

I don't buy anything that is uncovered. Neither do I buy from outdoor markets where it all sits on tables, uncovered.

cherriesandoranges · 23/01/2019 17:21

Yeah I agree with you that's quite gross. Also I'd appreciate if they'd just cover them up completely then I would forget about them and stop buying them - and be a stone lighter! Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/01/2019 17:23

I’ve also seen child wander over to a mountain of uncovered bagels, sneeze loudly and get hussled away by mum/nanny.

A toddler was face down in a large box of mushrooms, chomping away at the dirty mushrooms before his mum pulled him away by his hood.

I also saw a child lick the nozzle of the ‘grind your own’ peanut butter machine in Wholefoods. Beyond grim.

Fiddie · 23/01/2019 17:25

It's vile, I would not ever buy one.

CheshireChat · 23/01/2019 17:27

I hate this as well and don't understand why the hell it's the norm over here. Best system I've seen was in a Carrefour where you knocked the pastry into a little middle channel that was covered as well so you only had contact with what you bought.

SunnySomer · 23/01/2019 17:28

I’ve told s local cafe owner that I’ll never buy his cake until he covers it. It’s really grim - I’m not sure how they pass hygiene checks by the fsa?

MyAuntyBadger · 23/01/2019 17:34

Yanbu, it's gross. I stayed in a hotel on Saturday night before an early Sunday flight, it was a buffet breakfast. I'd had bacon, egg etc. and gone back for another cup of tea when I saw a man sneeze all over the uncovered food. He didn't make any attempt to cover his face, just a big, wet sneeze over everything. Never again.

Angelil · 23/01/2019 17:35

I'd like them to be covered over...to help those of us calorie-counting! #ugh #january #monthofausterityanddiets

southnownorth · 23/01/2019 17:38

I wish Lidl would cover their stuff up.

I try to get there early or take one right from the back, but I still keep thinking about what the items have been subjected to.
