To think pouring water on your icy car is just selfish?

Just fell on my face outside a neighbour who must have done this early morning.

So a stream of ice running across the pavement to the road which I didn't see

I fell hard. Am OK but if I were elderly or more fragile I could have bad injuries.

At least salt the pavement after!

Who the hell uses boiling hot water to de-ice their car??? You probably wouldn't shatter the windscreen but if you have the tiniest crack you could cause big problems as Hot water freezes faster than cold water.
Warm salt water is fine, but we use a cheap alcohol solution from Amazon, works so fast.

rmdbsmummy · 24/01/2019 20:14

Pure stupidity it's the quickest way to crack your screen for a start 😑

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/01/2019 20:19

Is ANYBODY reading other people's posts?

NO ONE IS POURING BOILING WATER ON THEIR WINDSCREENS!!

And MightyMoose please don't reference the USA as paragons of virtue on this one - leaving a car running unnecessarily for however long is contributing to global warming. But wait, according to Trump that's fake news!

userlotsanumbers · 24/01/2019 20:26

Everyone has seen that viral video from 'The Manc' on FB, yes? The one where you defrost a windscreen using a freezer bag filled with warm water - putting it into contact with the windscreen defrosts it, and with no water running over the pavement. Looks a neat trick, I want to try it. Anyone had a go? It looks like it works.

cherish123 · 24/01/2019 20:29

Stupid, as well. Her windscreen could crack, if it is hot water. It could freeze, if the water is cold.

MissConductUS · 24/01/2019 20:39

Hot water freezes faster than cold water.

Say what?

leaving a car running unnecessarily for however long is contributing to global warming.

Do you have a carbon neutral way of heating the water you use to deice your car?

Dreamscomingtrue · 24/01/2019 20:44

“Hot water can in fact freeze faster than cold water for a wide range of experimental conditions. This phenomenon is extremely counterintuitive, and surprising even to most scientists, but it is in fact real. ... The phenomenon that hot water may freeze faster than cold is often called the Mpemba effect”

The water used to defrost a windscreen is “NOT HOT” so NOT Heated. It’s LUKEWARM from a tap!!!

luckylavender · 24/01/2019 20:49

@ShatnersWig - I read a lot of AIBU & I haven't read it before. I use de-icer but hadn't thought of the water = ice equation. Really no need for that tone.

ItsMEhooray · 24/01/2019 20:53

I wonder if the people claiming windscreens will crack if water touches it actually own a car.

TornFromTheInside · 24/01/2019 20:54

They are explaining that very hot water on a frozen windscreen is a bad idea - because the glass can suffer from thermal shock

Glostergull · 24/01/2019 20:59

you dont need to spray water or anything on windows. or scrape it off. just put a few sheets of newspaper on your windscreen tucked under the wipers and overlap some so they wrap around the doors which you then close on them. or use a blanket. in the morning, despite a hard front. your windscreen will be clear.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/01/2019 21:01

They are explaining that very hot water on a frozen windscreen is a bad idea
And there is no need to explain that, because a) we know, and b) NO ONE IS USING VERY HOT WATER!

Do you have a carbon neutral way of heating the water you use to deice your car?
I use water from the tap that is already WARM (not HOT) from rinsing the breakfast things. That OK with you?

Holidayshopping · 24/01/2019 21:02

NO ONE IS POURING BOILING WATER ON THEIR WINDSCREENS!!

I know-this repetition of something that the OP wasn’t actually talking about is just getting stupid now!

Cancel the cheque.

Cherrysherbet · 24/01/2019 21:04

I use tepid water to device my van. I can’t reach the windscreen to scrape it. I don’t let it run over pavements though. It’s s safe thing to do as long as you use your noodle!!!

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/01/2019 21:05

just put a few sheets of newspaper on your windscreen tucked under the wipers and overlap some so they wrap around the doors which you then close on them. or use a blanket.

By the time you've farted around doing that, it'd take less time to just stand and breathe on it in the morning. And the slightest puff of wind and you'll be picking scraps of the Daily Mail out of your neighbours' gardens for days. And imagine the thread about that!

manicmij · 24/01/2019 21:13

Who on earth uses water to clean frost from a windscreen. Stupid doesn't come close. If there is front on the windows it means the temperature is or has very recently been below freezing. Water, low temp = ice. No one heard of de-icer or a scraper. I am losing faith in humanity!

Solo · 24/01/2019 21:33

This happened to me when Dd was tiny and in my arms. I fell, twisted around so she didn't get hurt but, I absolutely smacked my hip into the pavement. People are stupid sometimes.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 24/01/2019 21:33

Hope all the de-icers being used are non-aerosols. Shock

woodhill · 24/01/2019 21:34

Me, it's quick and effective

LoveBeingAMum555 · 24/01/2019 21:58

Slightly off topic but my newish car is a nightmare to clear because the demister is hopeless whereas DS1s 14 year old model is brilliant, has a proper fan that actually works. Find myself muttering about fancy climate control and cars not being made like they used to be.

Off to investigate car covers that go right over your wing mirrors. Genius.

Mylittlepea · 24/01/2019 22:01

FFS is it me or are we over egging the pudding here? Use a scraper on your car windows. It’s January and occasionally there’s gonna be a frost on some mornings. Yes it was an ice rink on the paths where I live today but I scraped my windows, gave my DD a lift to the school bus stop as it was so slippy and then carefully drove to work. Then I got on with my day. End of story.

Just put warm water in a hole free plastic bag,.., then brush accrues screen! Same result and no mess!

onegiftedgal · 24/01/2019 22:14

YABU. There are actually some sensible people who use tepid water from the tap on their icy cars and don't just flay it around everywhere. Better than using de icer with all of those chemicals surely?
It's winter, you know that if you are walking anywhere that it could be slippy so just walk carefully with winter footwear like sensible people do.
The ones that can find a complaint with how people de ice their cars are more than likely the ones who moan that its too warm when the temperature hits 20 degrees.
Always looking for a grumble in life.
