To think pouring water on your icy car is just selfish?

Just fell on my face outside a neighbour who must have done this early morning.

So a stream of ice running across the pavement to the road which I didn't see

I fell hard. Am OK but if I were elderly or more fragile I could have bad injuries.

At least salt the pavement after!

I don’t think it’s selfish. I don’t do it.

I don’t get why you just don’t watch where you’re going. Someone could have spilt a drink, a radiator leak...anything.

I pour a jug of hottish water over the windscreen. (We have a large drive with gravel so it doesn’t create dangerous icy bits for anyone else).

I’ve done it forever and never had a cracked windscreen.

I had a neighbour water his plant pots (those hung from above the door) when it was -4 one day. I was chuckling to my DH, that's gonna freeze everything. He created an ice-rink on his drive for his ds to skull himself less than an hour later. How can you be so thick?

CammieKennaway · 24/01/2019 17:58

I agree - pouring water on your windscreen is selfish and also asking for trouble if the temperature is a little too hot, meaning you get a nice sudden crack and need it replacing.
I simply use a frostguard but an opened up bin liner does the job just as well so long as it's properly secured and Halfords sell a brilliant large black spatula style sturdy ice scraper for £1 that quickly gets rid of any ice and is easy to hold even if you have mobility problems.
A quick way to get rid of ice and inside misting is to make sure that even though your heating is on in your car, you put your windows down slightly as it allows the air to circulate.

kennycat · 24/01/2019 18:02

I hadn’t actually thought of the ice on the pavement thing but I thought you weren’t meant to do it because it could make the windscreen crack!! I’ve heard we done it. Just use a scraper and some de-icer if I’ve got any.

avril2114 · 24/01/2019 18:03

Hot water on a icy windy could crack it!!

@CarolDanvers - AGREE FULLY. WELL SAID
@ShatnersWig - stop crapping on people unless you're perfect

How can you NOT realise this? Really?

Oh shut up. It’s that kind of response that makes people nervous to post on here and makes us look like nasty twats. They joined the conversation and now know something they hadn’t considered before and will change what they do and you turn on them like that? Totally unnecessary.

thornyhousewife · 24/01/2019 18:05

I use water to de ice my car. It's better for the environment than de icer.

Sorry you slipped on ice when it was icy. Do try and be more careful.

JacquesHammer · 24/01/2019 18:10

You do know being patronising just makes you look a bit stupid?

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 24/01/2019 18:11

There are an awful lot of people on here who don't seem to understand the concept of lukewarm water, as opposed to boiling hot that could crack cold glass.
I've been pouring tepid water on my windscreen every frosty morning for more years than many on this thread have even been alive, and never had a crack yet.

Queensdale · 24/01/2019 18:15

I use warm water and never cracked a wind screen, but with where my car is no one is going to be walking near it. If it was parked near a pavement or where people walked I would get the scrapper out!

sallyfox · 24/01/2019 18:16

pour boiling water on the ice on the footpath and make sure all the water you pour drains inside the gutter immediately, if you don't have salt/grit

woodhill · 24/01/2019 18:17

I have a Ford and use heaters but still use water method too. Tepid water but on my drive

MummasTheWord · 24/01/2019 18:17

Wow I would never have thought of this knock on consequence and in the morning rush your neighbour might be the same, maybe mention it and I am sure they will be mortified and adapt their method rather than hurt someone.

OJZJ · 24/01/2019 18:18

Glitterkitten not boiling water, warm water...but the kettle is a convenient pouring device and much better than scooping it up with your hands and running through the kitchen with dripping water or lobbing a bucket at it Grin... .
. As Kazzyhoward says if done properly very little runs onto the road anyway and the bit that does usually runs into the gutter and down as drain possibly melting other ice as it goes....
It's also a lot more environmentally friendly than cans of chemical deicer as well....or even plastic scrapers for that matter Grin
Another plus is it warms the windscreen/windows so it doesn't mist up inside and your not running your engine for ages getting it to heat up and demist the windows (another environmental plus point) so it's warm water all the way in this house and yes I am elderly (46Grin) and infirm....

OJZJ · 24/01/2019 18:20

Ps in contrast I was silently enraged at the street full of empty cars sat with engines running whilst they warmed up etc this morning as I was creating an ice rink for the rest of you with my warm water

mrbreezeet1 · 24/01/2019 18:22

It's said You can crack your windshield pouring hot water on it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 18:25

Please don't do this on the road either - cyclists and ice don't mix.

TornFromTheInside · 24/01/2019 18:32

I'm gonna throw a spanner in the works and mention that when you drive home and park on snow, that helps black ice to form too!

Holidayshopping · 24/01/2019 18:35

It's said You can crack your windshield pouring hot water on it.

Really? I’ve not heard anyone say that before.

singleascheeseslice · 24/01/2019 18:36

I wanna watch these posters scrape their car and be off in "no time"... Takes me ages... can't feel my hands... have to take breaks cos it's not even breaking the surface... have DOMs in my puny biceps all day.

I used water after reading the advice on both threads on here recently (The one about running the engine in the morning and upsetting neighbors and the one about de-icer being dangerous for cats) and was amazed how fast it worked, then I really was off in "no time". I do have my own drive but now I'm rethinking this as well. Fgs MN!

Stupomax · 24/01/2019 18:39

You do know being patronising just makes you look a bit stupid?

Indeed.
