To worry I might die here on the toilet?

It happens to me now and again.

I suffer from IBS that strikes in the middle of the night.

Wake up in agony and then have to spend an hour or two in the bathroom.

I think tonight's attack is thanks to a large amount of sweetcorn. Combined with the fact I've eaten crap the last few days.

Trying all the deep breathing etc. It's just so painful and scary. Thankfully my bath is is front of the loo so I can lean forward and rest my arms/head on it.

I can recommend peppermint capsules they do help somewhat. I also take ancephillous (strong probiotic) tablets.

It’s utterly miserable and I fear an attack every time I walk out my front door. The amount of times I’ve driven home racing hoping I make it...it’s awful.

Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

springydaff · 23/01/2019 02:54

Gosh that's interesting Venison!

So sorry op, you poor poor thing. I remember this, hours on the toilet, nearly passing out with the pain.

In my case it was wheat was the cause of the ibs. On a whim I cut out wheat, felt fluey for a week, then born again! I think the theory is that the wheat grain has been so mucked about (gm) that whole swathes of us can't stomach it - literally. I'm not bad with spelt flour, which is an old wheat grain I think.

I hope you get to the bottom root of it soon xxx

Tattybear16 · 23/01/2019 03:17

Yes, to the stripping. I thought that it was just me who did this. The pain is unbelievable, I sometimes turn the tap on so that i can focus on something else. I know it’s a waste of water, but the pain overrides everything else and I need to refocus.

ImPreCis · 23/01/2019 03:30

Springydaff I have just been to see a gastroenterologist, and I mentioned that I am sure that a LCHF diet helps to control my IBS. I expected him to say that was ridiculous, but he confirmed that wheat is known to be a trigger for many people, and that cutting gluten out of ones diet may control IBS for those with an intolerance.
Meanwhile, I hope you are feeling better OP and are tucked up with a HWB. It is a dreadful condition, quite widespread and little understood. Have you tried the FODMAP (?) diet, a friend of mine had a lot of success using it to calm down a very prolonged IBS attack.

kateandme · 23/01/2019 03:34

oh you poor thing.hours later my fingers are crossed that your off the loo and snuggled up.
so many people on here struggling with it.it makes the world seem so dark doesn't it!the fear when you have it.the fear of when it will next come.eeek.
really found some breathing techniqus helped.and the 5 senses relaxer.imagine your favourite place.what do you see.so on the beach.
see.the sea.the waves.the green on the cliffs.the kids running about.your dog.your family sitting close by.
hear.the waves.the gulls.the jet ski.the wind.the howling laughter of others.
smells.bbq.the wet sea and sand.the flowers.the suntan lotion.
touch.the towels.the water.the sand beneath ur feet and the warmth of the heat coming through to your back and limbs.
taste.warm sea air.holiday food.sea mist.etc
really helps if you do this.keep breathing and calming down some.

kateandme · 23/01/2019 03:35

I also am of the bollocks to the diet helping category.it has nothing that kick it off in my diet.no amount of changes or cutting out would help.there is no food that starts it.so no amount of diet changes or plans will help.it has a very evil life of its own.
stress is its fuel I do know that.

jessstan2 · 23/01/2019 05:10

KrispyKremes, it is horrible, isn't it? I'm so sorry for you. You won't die on the toilet but it does feel like that sometimes, for anyone who doesn't know what IBS is like. You also wonder how so much can come out when you've eaten so little.

I hope you're feeling a bit better now.x

Bless you Flowers.

Asta19 · 23/01/2019 05:51

@Venison
Thanks for posting that. I’ve had IBS for years but lately it’s been utterly horrendous. To the point where many times I don’t make it to the loo Blush I looked up what you said and I’ve had that intermittent left side tummy pain for a good while now. I’d actually been meaning to go to the doctors about it. Along with all the other listed symptoms.

OP, hope you’re feeling better now and managed to get some sleep.

OrcinusOrca · 23/01/2019 06:22

So sorry to everyone who suffers, I've had a better couple of weeks thankfully but was up a few times a week in the night in the run up to Christmas. It's so shattering to go through. Diet doesn't seem to help mine much but lactose does trigger it so I watch out with that a bit.

As much as I'm often in loads of pain I try to get a hot water bottle ASAP because it helps with the pain more than anything else I've found. I've also stopped going back to bed after the first visit to the loo because when I get 15 mins peace but then need to leap up again, it's even worse. Instead I go and nap on the sofa and I think that calms me more as I feel less pressured somehow...

Onescaredmuma · 23/01/2019 06:40

I've been there OP. I hope you're feeling better Flowers

KrispyKremes · 23/01/2019 07:02

Thanks so much everyone.

(Of course) I did survive the night. Was up for about 2 hours but when it gets really bad I have to put the phone down to focus on my breathing and managing the pain.

Mines definitely food related. And I'm sure sweetcorn was the culprit. Though it didn't help it was on a pizza so the sweetcorn (and the woman put a LOT on it - Asda build your own pizza thing) wad accompanied by a pizza base and lots of "cheese" perfect storm I think.

Generally I eat very healthily and I don't even need to consider that I can get IBS. But we had a bad yesterday and after a CAMHS appointment stopped in a new area by ASDA to get something lazy for dinner. So combine emotion with travelling and trigger food and I'm not surprised.

I also do the stripping off. Then when it's not winter (thank you open window) I sometimes need to run a towel until the cold tap and lay that on my neck/back to cool down.

JonSlow · 23/01/2019 07:33

I thought I was unique in stripping off - thank you for opening my eyes!

zod1ac19 · 23/01/2019 07:51

KrispyKreme if you think sweetcorn was a trigger have you tried a low fibre diet?

After colonoscopy and gastroscopy, my GI consultant suggested a low fibre diet and gave me the hospital diet sheets. My IBS is not fixed but is under a lot better control now.

If you google nhs low fibre diet you’ll find a hospital diet sheet. You just need to try it for s few weeks. If it doesn’t work then forget it.

On my diet sweetcorn is a big no-no, I find it guarantees an attack.

Pk37 · 23/01/2019 08:40

You poor thing .
Mine seems to have calmed down a bit now but I remember having to sit on the toilet for an hour or so , swaying and trying to to fall off as I was so tired but in so much pain .
Mebeverine is the only thing that helped

Pk37 · 23/01/2019 08:40

not to fall off

Soubriquet · 23/01/2019 08:44

Oh my god..all this sounds terrifyingly familiar.

Every now and then, I have what me and my dh call a clear out.

My stomach kills me, I end up having to place a wrapped up towel against it to help. I strip naked as I end up sweating and I just keep going and going until I feel empty.

When I finish, I usually end up having to lay on the bathroom floor for a moment as I feel like absolute crap.

I have never once thought it could be IBS...but now I will have to have a look into it

Auldspinster · 23/01/2019 08:58

Weirdly i get chills and am freezing cold during an ibs flare up.

elisexo · 23/01/2019 09:54

I have had the same experience but for me it happens around once every 2-3 years so too far apart to know what the trigger is. I get really hot and sweaty and then really cold and shivery, my hearing goes funny and I feel really dizzy and unless I lower my head I end up fainting and coming round to the thud of my head on the ground and then the cool feeling of the bathroom floor. There is also this "sense of doom" which is so horrific where you feel like the episode will never end. It is really strange.

KrispyKremes · 23/01/2019 10:16

I'm so sorry so many of you suffer the same. It's the worst. I think it being so painful and it being the night makes it so much worse and turns it into a panic attack too. I'm always hot while it's happening and then freezing and shivery afterwards.

Still cold today (but it is cold so hard to tell) gingery eating a banana and some peppermint and hoping there's not another round. (Never normally is, don't think I've anything left to give anyway.)

I used to be a lot more careful with what I ate, but I started Slimming World a year ago and have been fine. No attacks at all, and barely any pain in the daytime which sometimes I'd get if stressed/nervous.

I've been off the wagon for a week though, and the sweetcorn (which I eat plenty of on SW) was the straw that broke the camels back after days of terrible eating.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/01/2019 10:32

I feel for you OP

I have the IBS but IBS D. I have been where you are, literally for hours too, and it hurts and you sweat and all sorts, as you must know .
Hopefully not much longer now Flowers

BusySnipingOnCallOfDuty · 23/01/2019 10:37

Have any of you got a toddler's toilet stool to prop your feet up on? It helps put you in the correct squatting position. I sighed terribly with my bowels, movements are either frequent and explosive, or missing for days then excruciatingly painful. So the stool is amazing, really helps make sure you're empty. Saves on some of the straining as well. I'm sorry so many of you are struggling. X

PerfectPeony · 23/01/2019 10:39

Haven’t read the whole thread but have you tried the FODmap diet?

I also gave up dairy, which was hard but it has changed my life!

romany4 · 23/01/2019 10:41

I have IBS and you have all my sympathy.
I've done the sitting on the toilet in the middle of the night, in pain, cold and feeling very alone!
It's horrible. Especially if you don't know what you ate to cause it

Littlechocola · 23/01/2019 10:42

I’m another who strips off during an episode!

It’s awful.

Jens303 · 23/01/2019 10:44

it's an odd thing to say & I have no experience personally but there are some yoga moves that can help relieve digestive problems & nothing to loose by taking a look at them?
