It's snowing here. Already the roads are jammed. I got home to find DD(18) in agony with an earache and a raging sore throat. She had some Lemsip (1000mg Paracetamol) at 3.30 and it has done nothing to reduce the pain. I say I'll go and get some Nurofen and some lozenges (this was about 6.30).
"Oh no," says DP "you've been ill - I'LL go"
40 minutes later he goes out of the door - after fannying with his phone and checking the weather.
40 minutes!! I could have been there and back (almost) in that time.
Poor DD is in agony.

I am sure she will live. She 18 not 8.

daughterofanarchy · 22/01/2019 19:31

Not to derail but Diffilam throat spray and strefen lozenges may help her.

KM99 · 22/01/2019 19:33

He's BU taking that long. But you are both BU not having a basic stock of medicine in the house.

BottleOfJameson · 22/01/2019 19:34

Not the end of the world but frustrating yes. Is it tonsilitis? It can be awful. I had it so bad one time I couldn't swallow my own saliva - kept spitting it out. I ended up moving on to codeine and aneasthetic throat sweets.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/01/2019 19:35

A child is for life Apollo they don’t suddenly turn 18 and you stop caring for them, more so when they are in ill health.

YANBU - hopefully he will be back soon and get her some comfort pain relief.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 22/01/2019 19:37

Really KM Hmm did you even read the OP, she has given her DD paracetamols t hasn’t helped!

Haribeau · 22/01/2019 19:39

Earache and sore throat could equal Quincy throat. If that’s the case only penicillin will help.

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 19:42

We do have a stock of medicine, but DD can't swallow anything, so he's gone to get liquid or chewables.
Yes, she's 18 not 8, but she's never ill. Always been strong and healthy, so it's a shock to see her so miserable. I would take her to A&E if it weren't snowing and the roads weren't blocked.
I've rung 111, who said to do everything that we've already done, and they'll send a message to our doctor to warn them we'll call in the morning.
I'm just so frustrated with DP who doesn't have a sense of urgency, or desire to help his daughter.

If he was fannying around for 40 minutes and she was in such pain, why did you not just go anyway?

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 19:43

haribeau - quinsy is horrible - I hope it's not that.

Ahhhhh mumsnet! Where you should throw your children out and cut all emotional ties as soon as the clock strikes midnight on their 18th birthday, and anything bad that ever happens could have been prevented with proper forward planning and organisation.

Hope she feels better soon Flowers

ApolloandDaphne · 22/01/2019 19:56

Yes i know a child is yours for life. My DDs are 21 and 26 now. I think I am
Just a bit of a robust person who would be saying chin up DD it isn't terminal!

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 19:56

adaline - I wish I had, if I'd known how long it was going to take. After 20 minutes I was saying Are you going then? she's really in pain! and finally - Please Go! at which he rolled his eyes and spent 5 mins putting his boots on.
He has form for this. Had I not been ill myself for a week, I wouldn't have accepted his offer.
Thank you spuriouser.

Saying something isn't terminal doesn't stop the pain.

Dafspunk · 22/01/2019 19:59

You’d take her to A&E with an earache and a sore throat? Jesus wept, your husband’s probably taking so long because he’s out trying to find a grip for you.

greenelephantscarf · 22/01/2019 19:59

for an earache I would recommend a decongestant nose spray (in the nose) to relieve the pressure.

pinkhorse · 22/01/2019 20:01

A&E for an earache? Wow!

MrsJayy · 22/01/2019 20:02

Urgh is he normally such a faffer ? I am married to a faffer it does me in, hopefully your dd is better soon I like tyrozets for a sore throat.

Coolaschmoola · 22/01/2019 20:03

A&E?!

Dear God. Gargle with hot salt water, heat pad on ear. GP in the morning.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 22/01/2019 20:03

Dafspunk Hmm

Actually in some cases A&E would be appropriate. These are the red flag symptoms:

  • a severe sore throat that quickly gets worse
  • swelling inside the mouth and throat
  • difficulty speaking
  • difficulty swallowing
  • difficulty breathing
  • difficulty opening your mouth

HellonHeels · 22/01/2019 20:04

I don't think I'd find much comfort in someone saying 'chin up it's not terminal'. Why would you want to be so dismissive when you could be kind?

OP get her to try gargling with warm salty water. Wrapped up hot water bottle on the side that's got earache (put it on her neck or.see if she can get some relief from lying with her neck on it)

Tartsamazeballs · 22/01/2019 20:05

If it's a quinsy I really feel for her. My husband had one last year, two trips to the doctor, and three times in A&E before it was finally diagnosed as quinsy rather than tonsilitis, poor bugger was in hospital for 2 nights and had three weeks off work total. It was insane.

So yes @Dafspunk, sometimes you go to A&E with a sore throat Hmm

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 20:06

I have a grip, thank you.
She is in agony, weeping with pain.
I called 111 like any sensible person would.
This is unusual for her.

HellonHeels · 22/01/2019 20:06

I also agree with the PP who suggested a decongestant. Try a hot shower, the steam may help clear it.

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 20:07

She has a hot water bottle.
