It's snowing here. Already the roads are jammed. I got home to find DD(18) in agony with an earache and a raging sore throat. She had some Lemsip (1000mg Paracetamol) at 3.30 and it has done nothing to reduce the pain. I say I'll go and get some Nurofen and some lozenges (this was about 6.30).
"Oh no," says DP "you've been ill - I'LL go"
40 minutes later he goes out of the door - after fannying with his phone and checking the weather.
40 minutes!! I could have been there and back (almost) in that time.
Poor DD is in agony.

Ear ache can be horrifically painful Sad

HellonHeels · 22/01/2019 20:10

A soluble codeine medication would be one.to go for. She'll get a dose.of paracetamol and.codeine that should take the edge.off. Solpadeine?

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 20:15

All suggestions noted, thank you.

' I would take her to A&E if it weren't snowing'

You can be pretty sure it's not actually an A&E case if the snow is enough to put you off going.

QueenieInFrance · 22/01/2019 20:18

I second (or third) decongestant for the earache.
And yes tonsillitis and earache are awful.

YANBU to think he could have hurried up. I would have had a go at him or gone myself tbh.

labazsisgoingmad · 22/01/2019 20:18

hope she feels better real soon and gets some respite from the pain hope you feel better too

kateandme · 22/01/2019 20:19

yellow box.cavonia throat spray is magic op.
and tirozets help.

QueenieInFrance · 22/01/2019 20:19

Btw can I ask how bad he is when he has man flu? Does he need support, drinks taken to this etc...?
Because if he does he is even more unreasonable!!!

kateandme · 22/01/2019 20:23

does she allow you to comfort her too op.i know she "18" but when I had this it really helped when my mum came and just sat and stoked my head close to the pain.it was so soothing and calming

ChrisjenAvasarala · 22/01/2019 20:26

When my son had awful earache, I tried massage and it helped massively. It might not work for her, but worth a wee try.

This is the advice I followed:

Gentle massage can help with ear pain that radiates from the jaw or teeth, or that causes a tension headache.

People can massage the tender area, as well as any surrounding muscles. For example, if the area behind the ear hurts, try massaging the muscles of the jaw and neck.

Massage may also help with the pain of an ear infection.

Using a downward motion, apply pressure beginning just behind the ears and down the neck.
Continuing to apply pressure downward, work forward to the front of the ears.

if it's that thing where you can't swallow your own saliva - urgh!! so horrible. only codeine worked on the pain and also Chloraseptic throat spray.

I would have been raging with DP as well.

hope she feels better asaply!!!

IAmWonderWoman · 22/01/2019 20:28

equal Quincy throat

Or a quinsy. Any sore throat can cause ear pain.

Cranky17 · 22/01/2019 20:33

YOu need to get her to stop crying, I used to get chronic tonsillitis and crying really makes it so much worse as it makes the congestion worse

45andahalf · 22/01/2019 20:48

Earache with tonsillitis is one of the more painful things I’ve ever experienced, even including childbirth. OP, I believe paracetamol has a cumulative painkilling effect, so she should continue to take it alongside the ibuprofen (obv being careful not to exceed the stated dosage in 24 hours).

delboysskinandblister · 22/01/2019 20:53

I had a raging sore throat for 10 days and couldn't swallow but avoided going to the GP because they have had a poster up about the cost of each type of treatment (a prec-cursor for when they start charging NHS patients methinks) and a poster for the time frame of each Winter cold/flu ailment.

The most effective and by fast the easiest and cheapest was gargling with warm salty water. Do not use tap water. Only from the kettle and allow to cool for 20mins.

Do this AFTER brushing your teeth and the back of your tongue after every meal and drink that isn't plain water. Cut out all sugar and dairy. Her throat will thank her for it.

Just eat things like cucumber (if she needs to eat anything to line her stomach) which is naturally anti imflammatory and very cooling and soothing.

At least she could get some relief from the pain whlst she's waiting for her Dad to return from Glaxo laboratories Wink

Livpool · 22/01/2019 20:59

Solpedeine(sp?) Max is good - it has paracetamol and codeine (strongest you can have without a prescription) and you can get a dissolving one. Just be careful if you have already taken paracetamol. You can also take ibuprofen - so you can have full cover.

Hope your daughter feels better soon

HellonHeels · 22/01/2019 21:07

How's she doing now OP? Hope your DP is back and she's had some pain relief X

Workfear · 22/01/2019 21:12

Isn't there a trick about putting a hot cloth inside a mug and putting that against the ear? Keep seeing it on FB and it's supposed to work well on earache.

Give her the paracetamol and nurofen together. You can take both. But if you get anything stronger wait 2 hours before taking it, like solphadeine. It's too strong to take with regular paracetamol too.

Whyareyouallabunchof · 22/01/2019 21:18

Flowers for your dd
Wine for you
and a kick up the arse for your dh

JennyHolzersGhost · 22/01/2019 21:20

I’m guessing you were posting for comments about your H, not medical advice.

My comment re your H: is your frustration with him part of a wider pattern of his behaviour which is thoughtless or uncaring ? Or does he just have a bit of a blind spot when it comes to medical needs or some other aspect ? We can advise and commiserate with you about your relationship but only if you elaborate a bit more.

Hope your daughter is feeling better soon. Perhaps you could crush some painkillers if she can’t swallow solids ?

Stilllearning01 · 22/01/2019 21:39

you can mix paracetamol (lemsip) and nurofen. If it's really bad you may want to call 111 again and see if the out of hours GP will see her. When i had a quincy he sent me on to A&E. if you have a quincy you can mostly not open you mouth wide enough to get a spoonful of food in. (or for the GP to check the state of your tonsils)

supersop60 · 22/01/2019 23:33

Thank you all. Everything has calmed down a bit (loadsadrugs)and she's asleep. Docs in the morning.
itsmehooray - it wasn't the snow, it was that the roads were blocked. I can drive in snow but I can't drive over abandoned cars, which is why we tried something else.
jennyholzers - he frequently says he's going to do something or go somewhere, and then doesn't. That's fine if it only affects him. Too often he'll offer to pick up DD or DS (when I have arranged to), thinking he's helping, and then leaves the house at the time they're expecting to be picked up. Then I get a text - "Where are you?"
I'm just going to have to say, no, I'll do it, and tell him why.
Unless anyone has any other suggestions.
