Parcels stinking of smoke

I've just had some packages delivered from Amazon (delivery guy was a bloke in his own car). As soon as I got the packages inside I noticed a really strong smell of cigarette smoke, he had clearly been smoking in his vehicle while doing his rounds. Would I be unreasonable to complain about this? Or would you just shrug it off? I've had to put the packages in the garage as they were stinking out the house, but the items themselves don't seem to have been tainted.

Tell Amazon. Not sure they can do anything but this would piss me off too.

Fraggleface · 22/01/2019 14:51

I saw a delivery guy light up a fag as he got into his car, which was full or parcels, the other day and thought I’m glad none of them are coming to me. (And I say that as an ex / social smoker).
Definitely complain.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 22/01/2019 14:51

I would complain.

Sometimes it's due to the packaging they use, some black bags absolutely stink.

Fightingfit2019 · 22/01/2019 14:53

Our delivery lady is like this and will actually hand you your parcel with a cigerette in her hand!

Magenta82 · 22/01/2019 14:54

I've had that, it is especially annoying when I've ordered clothes and they turn up stinking.
However the delivery drivers are under a huge pressure to meet unreasonable targets and don't have time for breaks, I can see why they so smoke in the car.

Bigonesmallone3 · 22/01/2019 14:58

I had an ice cream delivery last night (very ill and pregnant) and the carrier bag absolutely stunk of cigarettes I was actually surprised how much smell a carrier bag could hold!

Bloody disgusting, especially around food!
I hate to think what his car smells like!

queenofkale · 22/01/2019 15:02

I was thinking about starting an almost identical thread.
No your YANBU. It's disgusting. Complain for sure.

I had a deliveroo delivered today - answered the door with newborn DD in sling and the driver had a lit cigarette in his hand and blew smoke into my face. The bag stunk of smoke too.

AnnieOH1 · 22/01/2019 15:03

I have complained before about this exact thing and thankfully it was sorted (and it is still the same delivery guy).

Bluelonerose · 22/01/2019 15:05

Where do you get an ice cream delivery from? Shock

DebbieFiderer · 22/01/2019 15:08

Good to know I'm not the only one to be annoyed by this! I'll contact Amazon to let them know

I think if it's considered a work vehicle then it must be no smoking, regardless if you have passengers or not. Most companies have policies around this and it may also be law, but again I'm not entirely sure.....

AdobeWanKenobi · 22/01/2019 15:09

Plastic mailer bags smell like cigarette smoke. Obviously not applicable in these cases but worth mentioning.

Frazzledmum123 · 22/01/2019 15:10

Not the same I know but I have a safe place listed with Amazon to leave parcels if we aren't in. Once they left it with my next door neighbour who smokes A LOT and it was bed sheets for our new born. I complained and they sent a new one the next day no problem. Like I said, not the same I know but I think they'd replace yours too.

Bigonesmallone3 · 22/01/2019 15:10

@Bluelonerose
😂 there is an app called 'snappy shopper' you can order anything, even a chocolate bar.. pay a small delivery fee and they bring in within an hour!
Dangerous

I don't know if it's a national thing

Neverender · 22/01/2019 15:12

He is part of the gig economy, not earning much, won't have a proper contract or employment rights, will be using his own car. I just couldn't do that to someone - they'll probably get rid of him.

MargiaStevens · 22/01/2019 15:15

I’ve had the same thing today - maybe we’ve all had the same driver!

OrdinaryGirl · 22/01/2019 15:24

I think we have the same driver! Good old Dave. 😄

Anquin · 22/01/2019 15:45

It’s not actually legal to smoke in your delivery vehicle while you’re working...

BeanTownNancy · 22/01/2019 15:47

@Bigonesmallone3

Sad times, no snappy shopper available in my area (I am also pregnant).
But it turns out I can get ice cream delivered within 30 minutes by an adorable robot, who is almost certainly a non-smoker.
I will store this in my memory banks for when I am shortly stuck at home unable to drive with a newborn and a toddler post-c-section! Then I can get wine delivered along with the ice cream... GrinWine

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 22/01/2019 15:52

I hate the smell of smoke but I wouldn't report someone for smoking because they might lose their much needed job. Smoking might be the only thing that keeps them sane, for some it is chocolate, for others it is alcohol.

Just throw the packaging away and let it go. Open it outside if it bothers you that much. Smoke doesn't actually bother me, it makes me feel sick but at least the packaging can be binned, the constant burning of garden and more often builder's waste it much worse as it never stops. Try not being able to open your windows on nice days.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 22/01/2019 15:52

Anquin

Not legal? Please tell us the legislation it's banned by.

thedancingbear · 22/01/2019 15:57

It's definitely illegal Veni. Can't be arsed to look up the legislation but it's part of the broader smoking in workplaces ban.

It's not ideal but I couldn't get worked up about this personally. He's got a shit job for shit money, and I don't think I could do something that would make his lot even worse.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 22/01/2019 16:09

I think you're allowed to smoke at work if you are the only person there. Otherwise it would be illegal for anyone working from home to smoke in their own house.

As the op stated the guy was in his own car it's likely he's self employed, no-one else uses the car for work and is therefore not covered.

Happy to be corrected with a pointer to the legislation though.

It could be argued that it's only him that uses the van.

Asta19 · 22/01/2019 17:41

Yes I believe it's not illegal if you are the sole person and it's your own vehicle. A company can state that all their company vehicles are non smoking. But they can't direct a single delivery person in a private vehicle not to smoke. I think it's fair enough to complain if the actual items smell of smoke but surely the packaging is just being thrown out anyway?
