Is this mean for 2 year olds birthday?

My DD turns 2 at the end of Feb, I'm a single mum and her dad isn't involved so get no maintenance or any help of him. We are moving house on the 9th of Feb so finances are very tight atm.

I was going to get her a slide because she likes slides and other than that I was just going to wrap up stuff she needs rather than stuff she will like such as some new shoes and clothes and a cute cutlery set just so she has stuff to open.

Is that mean? She got loads for Christmas, some stuff she hasn't even opened yet and is still in boxes and I know she won't know what a birthday even is but I feel really mean about it.

So AIBU to just get her one thing she will like and the rest stuff she needs?

I reckon you could just give her the wrapping paper and be down with it! That’s the most exciting part! Xx

If you didn't buy anything for your 2 yr old you would not be mean. Your child has no concept whatsoever of a birthday. Do not put any financial strain on yourself. If anyone else is buying for her and they ask what to get, suggest practical gifts such as clothes to save you having to buy any. If she got lots at Christmas then she doesn't need anything. You'll have plenty of years ahead when she's asking for things so enjoy these years where you really don't even have to buy a present at all.

YA absolutely NBU. you are doing a fab job x

TheBlob · 22/01/2019 12:48

You could get a teddy bear reasonably cheaply, I know mine me would have loved that the most.Grin

Iownabigvase · 22/01/2019 12:49

Ah she wont care! Really 😊 and getting stuff she needs is a great idea because you'll have to buy it at some point anyway so it's a win win. But I'm thinking, if she's still got some Christmas stuff she hasn't opened yet then just give her that?

100% fine - my DD is 4 and part of her birthday gift this year was a new toothbrush and some new toothpaste. She loved it. Most of the rest of her gifts from us were dinosaurs. She had more balloons than gifts.

Toooldtocareanymore · 22/01/2019 12:53

at 2 I don't even think you need to wrap up anything else the slide will be such a wow!! and a cake with a candle what else does any little girl want..

snowball28 · 22/01/2019 12:56

I made mine a cake at 2 and I think wrapped up a cuddly toy, sticker book and some play doh. I was also broke and thought f it he didn’t know what a birthday was so I just did a small celebration just is two and we went for an ice cream at the park

Apple103 · 22/01/2019 13:01

Mean by whose standards op?
Try not to live to others expectations.
We are very comfortable financially but when my ds turned 2 we got him one toy. He gets other stuff all year round so it's not like he missed one opportunity to be treated. As your dd got a load from Christmas surely thats enough?

Theunreasonableone · 22/01/2019 13:03

Not mean at all OP. Martin Lewis suggests wrapping an old cardboard box filled with blown up balloons for toddlers - they absolutely love it. I hope she has a brilliant birthday.

viques · 22/01/2019 13:03

Buy lots of birthday candles. If I remember rightly that was the thing my dd enjoyed most about being 2. Having candles on a cake (any cake, or even a sandwich) singing the song, spit blowing the candles out. Repeat.

RomanyRoots · 22/01/2019 13:05

OP, this is fine. I know it's not the point, but some people can only afford one of those things and the kids don't miss out.
I think the slide would be great and in time for her new home.
I doubt she'll understand much anyway. maybe you could add something special for her new room, rather than or in addition to the cutlery set.

We moved house the day after DC1 turned 2. So we were all packed up, didn't do many pressies and I think we took him to a local pet shop random but it was his fave thing at that age and to the inlaws for a small cake.
