Just a daft one really,

Anybody else that just cannot stand carpets? The first job I did in my new home was get rid!

I have wooden and tiled floors with underfloor heating. I do miss very thick carpets though. With dc and lots of animals though, it’s not practical.

greendale17 · 22/01/2019 12:38

I hate tiled floors with a passion. Wooden floors not practical either

Stinkytoe · 22/01/2019 12:38

My DH can’t stand carpets but he has sensory issues, has to wear slippers at all times indoors

Oysterbabe · 22/01/2019 12:39

I don't mind them in bedrooms but no where else really. We also have them on our stairs and landing which I can live with. Bathrooms, kitchen and hall are tiled. Lounge is wood. If we had pets I'd get rid of the carpets entirely as they would never be clean enough.
On balance YANBU.

buzzzzzzz · 22/01/2019 12:40

Yup hate them and currently in a house that is full of them except the kitchen and bathroom.

For me it’s more about being easier to clean and de fur. When you have pets Lino, tiles or wood are much easier to keep presentable.

Don’t get me wrong we run the vax carpet cleaner over them every six weeks or so, so they aren’t dirty, I just like being able to run around with a brush and a mop for 5 minutes a day and then see sparkly floor, as opposed to having to hoover twice a day with the giant Henry, especially now I’m about to pop, the Henry is the only one that works properly, didn’t find the battery powered vacuums any good for pet hair, and it’s heavy carting it up and down stairs

A hard floor is just easier to spot clean and keep looking fresh.

We are only heated by the fireplace and so we wear slippers indoors - would be perfectly happy with just a couple of rugs I could beat outside when necessary.

RiverTam · 22/01/2019 12:41

Carpets are soft and warm underfoot, but that is obviously personal preference.

However, I do wish more people would consider their surroundings when they get rid of soft furnishings like carpets and curtains because these ABSORB SOUND!!!!!

So if you are in a flat be aware that your neighbours may well hate you - and no, never wearing shoes doesn't help that much. My aunt's upstairs neighbours got rid of their carpets and even though they never wear shoes the noise they make is still very audible, whereas before you couldn't hear a thing.

Oceanbliss · 22/01/2019 12:41

Yanbu I hate carpets too. I love polished timber floors with throw rugs that can be washed.

Bluntness100 · 22/01/2019 12:42

I like carpets in bedrooms, proper quality wool ones. Downstairs I'm all floorboards so have a huge rug, it really does make a difference, carpet is warmer under foot and softens the appearance of the room.

Original floor boards, where as being beautiful are cold and hard on the feet.

newnameforthis7 · 22/01/2019 12:44

I like carpets. (Not in the bathroom or kitchen obvs!)

I prefer them to laminate. I had it once, and it was very high maintenance. Also it's cold to walk on, and you have to put rugs on it anyway. May as well have had carpets!

A house full of laminate on the floor always looks like a private let house to me.

Loungewearfan · 22/01/2019 12:46

I agree RiverTam, they shouldn’t be allowed in flats. Lots of leases prevent them I think.

JeezOhGeeWhizz · 22/01/2019 12:47

YANBU.
Carpets harbor pubes and skin particles.
And poo and pee that is trampled in from other places.
Nice.

RiverTam · 22/01/2019 12:50

Lounge yes, but it's not much use if the leaseholder doesn't enforce it!

First thing I always do is carpet when move lol each to their own I say but my dogs hate hard and I find it too noisy and cold
Lino in kitchens and bathrooms though
Carpets regularly cleaned

TheBlob · 22/01/2019 12:52

Love carpets, just wish my cats would stop puking on them!

Thehop · 22/01/2019 12:53

I love carpet! Only place we don’t have it is toilets and kitchen

veggiepigsinpastryblankets · 22/01/2019 12:55

YANBU unless you live in a flat, and especially if you are my upstairs neighbour considering getting rid of hers. No one wants to hear what you're watching on telly or the sound of you getting up for a 2am wee.

WTAF are you on about? Confused

Frouby · 22/01/2019 13:16

Carpets on stairs and in bedrooms. Hard flooring downstairs. All take shoes off at front door.

My carpets are still filthy when I clean them, usually every 6 to 8 weeks. But I still prefer carpets. I had sanded down, polished floorboards at my old house and it was bloody freezing AND more dusty.

I like to think that carpets catch the dust and keep it safe for me until I vacuum.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 22/01/2019 13:20

YANBU at all!

I hate the damn thing, it's the first thing that we got rid off when we moved.

They are ugly as hell, unhygienic and I don't understand why people are making their life more complicated that it needs. The number of posts about people having spill something on a carpet and wasting hours trying to make the stain and smell disappear.

Most lease forbid you to remove them in flats, which is fair enough because of the noise. In a house, yuk.

Just look at the amount of dust that flies around when you remove them, why would you want to be breathing that?

Ahhhmebowels · 22/01/2019 13:20

YANBU. I hate carpets. I have a dog and carpets are harder to keep clean. Wooden floors with nice rugs all the way.

newnameforthis7 · 22/01/2019 13:27

@Frouby

This exactly. ^ No carpets in a house at all makes it very cold and dank and unwelcoming. It's noisy too! As I said, it makes me laugh when people have laminate or just floorboards, and they throw rugs all over them! May as well have carpets!

I really dislike going to someone's house when they have no carpets at all. Horrible. Sad

I know ONE woman who has laminate throughout, and she still insists people remove their shoes before coming into the house.

Weirdo! Confused

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/01/2019 13:44

To people saying that bathroom carpets are disgusting, surely having the loo carpeted helps to cushion embarrassing splashing sounds? Grin

DonCorleoneTheThird · 22/01/2019 13:47

badlydrawnperson · 22/01/2019 13:49

I also hate carpets. Dirty nasty things

This place is hilarious at times.
