Put loo brushes in the dishwasher on their own, on hot setting, followed by a hot wash on empty??!!!

Another adding their voice to the chorus of “gross!”

Stick it in bleach for a little while if you must, but it’s only going to go back into the pooey bog again in any case.

artisanscotcheggs · 22/01/2019 09:33

You need to use cold water for bleach, not boiling. The heat kills the enzymes.

Also putting them in your dishwasher is an absolutely revolting idea.

artisanscotcheggs · 22/01/2019 09:34

@FlipF THE POO KNIFE! 💩

FuckingYuleLog · 22/01/2019 09:35

Can’t get my head around someone being so concerned about their toilet brush being clean that they’re willing to eat off plates with shit crumbs on....

PhilomenaButterfly · 22/01/2019 09:35

@planespotting I'd hope that a dishwasher would kill E coli.

Pinkbells · 22/01/2019 09:36

Dear god not please don't!
I use these, they don't 'hold on to' gunk and I soak the whole things in bleach in bucket just for them every week:

artisanscotcheggs · 22/01/2019 09:37

@FuckingYuleLog shitcrumbs is going to be my new favourite swear.

Tinyteatime · 22/01/2019 09:38

Oh my god! I think this might be the most grossed out I’ve ever been. A loo brush un the dishwasher Shock. The loo brush doesn’t need to be cleaned does it? I just shove some bleach in the bottom of the holder every once in a while and it gets rinsed off in the flush occasionally.

Pinkbells · 22/01/2019 09:38

When we moved into this house the only thing the sellers had left was the loo brush in the upstairs loo. I have changed the loo and fittings but am still using that loo brush.
Someone else's loo brush!!! Yuck!!!

FuckingYuleLog · 22/01/2019 09:40

This thread has put me off eating or drinking anything in anyone else’s house ever in case they do this.

Notso · 22/01/2019 09:41

Glad others have said about not using bleach in boiling water. It's easier for it to harm your lungs and pointless as the boiling water destroys the enzymes.

We don't have toilet brushes, I mostly use very hot water to clean the toilets resorting to bleach if the hot water hasn't done the job needed or someone has a D&V bug.

Jens303 · 22/01/2019 09:42

I use those duck things that has a pad on the end that goes away when you flush the toilet

VanGoghsDog · 22/01/2019 09:43

How do you get 'very hot water' into your toilet, out of interest?

00Sassy · 22/01/2019 09:47

PP suggestion of an overnight soak is the answer imo if you’re not cleaning them regularly.
I’m a cleaner in a hospital and what we do is start by flushing the toilet, put plenty of cleaning solution in the toilet and scrub it round the pan and under the waterline with the brush as usual, then submerge the brush part in the loo water while we clean the rest of the room.
When everywhere else is clean we come back to the toilet, clean that outside and seat, then a final scrub inside the pot and rinse under the flush to finish. This seems to keep the brushes clean.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 22/01/2019 09:47

A new one is 75p in Asda.

Princess1066 · 22/01/2019 09:48

Please tell me this thread is a wind up - firstly loo brushes - yuk - vile vile vile unsanitary things and secondly - in the dishwasher - WT actual F Shock

ILoveChristmasLights · 22/01/2019 09:48

LaurieFairyCakes
Please tell me you’re joking? I’ve had you down as ‘one of the normal ones’ for years now. Am I going to have to move you on my spreadsheet?

ILoveChristmasLights · 22/01/2019 09:51

Bandit I don’t think it’s about the cost, I think it’s the Plastic Bandwagon on a slow roll past.

Have you ever watched ‘Kath and Kim’? 😉

Notso · 22/01/2019 09:53

How do you get 'very hot water' into your toilet, out of interest?

A jug upstairs or a bowl downstairs. I tend to use water from the kettle downstairs but just from the tap upstairs.

VanGoghsDog · 22/01/2019 09:59

Oh, OK, so it's not "very hot" then, just tap hot.

ilovekale · 22/01/2019 10:00

Ewwww

Just buy a new one? They are like £3

Racecardriver · 22/01/2019 10:01

Sorry but that I completely disgusting. Reduce you plastic waste in ways that won’t make you sick.

KiteMarked · 22/01/2019 10:02

This is really, really unnecessary OP. Please reconsider.

Aeroflotgirl · 22/01/2019 10:03

Noooooo way, loo brushes are so cheap, get one from a discount store.

mumsastudent · 22/01/2019 10:03

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enterococcus_faecalis#Survival_and_virulence_factors apparently can resist strong chemicals & quite high temperatures - don't be daft - it disgusting - what I do is buy cheapest new toilet brush (under £1) fairly frequently - alternatively fill jug (pound shop) which you only use for bathroom - fill with hot/boiling water place loo brush in toilet flush & pour hot water on it - put toilet cleaner in bowl first. If I need to clear toilet said jug is filled with v hot water & pour in. double yuck for suggesting this!!!
