If you have a vocation or job you love...

What is it?

I’m a lone parent to one DC who is growing up and I don’t have much else in my life. I’ve spent the last decade working very hard in low paid jobs that fit around school/activities. I’d love a job that the more I do the more I reap, be it financially or emotionally.

I finally have the opportunity to study but I’m lost as to what to do or how to go about it.

If you have a vocation or a job you could give your life to, what is it?

I’m a social worker and love it. Very rewarding, stimulating and I work with amazing people. A field there will never be difficulties in getting a job, and you can train relatively quickly.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 20/01/2019 20:04

I'm going through this too. It's driving me mad. I finally have the opportunity to retrain or something but am paralysed because I don't want to do the wrong thing. There's no obvious path for me to take.

IGiorni · 20/01/2019 20:04

I work in childcare, in a very deprived area. It’s challenging and the pay is crap but I love it.

Littleloaf · 20/01/2019 20:06

Secondary school teacher. It has a lot of challenges and can be very tiring, but every day is a pleasure.

Youmadorwhat · 20/01/2019 20:07

Primary school teacher and I love it!!🙌❤️

StickItUpYaJumpa · 20/01/2019 20:10

I am planning on retraining as... something. No idea what. 😂

I'd love to do something involving writing.

@ChurroLover - Well done for making the first step! I truly hope you find what best suits you, your skills and your lifestyle.
I love my job! I have over 20 years work experience but only started in my recent job just over 3 years ago. I work as a Project Manager. Flexible, rewarding and I utilize all of my skills, can develop ones I never had... and work on those which required. Would highly recommend to anyone who has thick skin (not kidding!), great at communicating and excellent at time management.

@Merename
I thought training took years...?

CodLiverOil556 · 20/01/2019 20:34

I work in Bereavement and genuinely don't see my job as a job. It's my vocation. It's rewarding and satisfying to help people at their most vulnerable.

Merename · 20/01/2019 20:34

@Imustbemad00 - postgrad takes two years and some areas do fast track courses that can be more like 18 months including placements. Undergrad is 3-4 yrs tho.

Kirstiesmith1234 · 20/01/2019 20:36

I'm an Occupational therapist. It's the best job in the world and ever so rewarding!

Chasingrainbows10 · 20/01/2019 20:40

I am also a social worker and I love it too. I work with offenders so not typical social work, and it’s not for everyone but it brings me lots of happiness and achievement!

TinyTimsCrutch · 20/01/2019 20:42

I'm a postie and love it. It keeps me fit, the hours work around school and the moneys not bad for an unskilled jib.

stevie69 · 20/01/2019 20:43

I'm a chartered accountant. I loved it then. I love it now Smile

NickMarlow · 20/01/2019 20:51

I'm a Children's Minister working for a church. Trained as a primary teacher and so glad I'm doing this instead, it's incredibly rewarding and a really varied role. But never going to earn very much, and obviously not a good option unless you're a Christian!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/01/2019 21:05

Paediatric nurse. Love it!

ErickBroch · 20/01/2019 21:36

I work for a charity - my degree did help but it isn't the only way in!

namechanger2019 · 20/01/2019 21:52

I am an astronomer and I love it so much. Has been my dream since I was about 7. I would have preferred astronaut but I get motion sickness Grin.

Fluffymullet · 20/01/2019 21:59

What you find rewarding will be personal to you so it's worth thinking about what motivates you - is it doing a thorough job, teaching people skills eye, working with people/ animals? What would be your dream job and why?

Fluffymullet · 20/01/2019 22:02

I work as an allied health professional in the NHS. I love my job and I would say my colleagues do, although the job is physically/eomtionally and mentally tough.

I would suggest occupational therapist, physiotherapist, speech and language therapist, play therapist, art therapist all great jobs and very rewarding

Nicketynac · 20/01/2019 22:19

If you are thinking about an AHP within the NHS, pharmacists get paid more than most (all?) of them. Takes four years at uni then a year of paid training and professional exams.
Pharmacy technicians get paid quite well too and if you get an NHS training post then you get paid while you are at college too. Competition for jobs can be fierce though.

RadioGagga · 21/01/2019 19:16

IGiorni

Would love to hear more about your role?

spiffing · 21/01/2019 19:32

I'm a specialist nurse in organ donation. I support potential donor families and coordinate the whole organ donation process. It's a very hard but incredible job, seeing lives transformed make it so very worthwhile.

Minnie881 · 21/01/2019 19:36

I work in the environment dealing with protected species and water pollution. Absolutely love my job Smile

Craft1905 · 21/01/2019 21:19

I am an astronomer and I love it so much.

My parents thought I was going to be an astronomer. Because the teacher wrote in my school report that I was "just taking up space".
