. . . to put my foot down about the curtains?

RedPandaFluff · 19/01/2019 20:58

Not really an AIBU but I need votes 😄 Our new bedroom has two 'windows' - one is a set of double doors (like patio doors) with a Juliet balcony and the other window is the same width but only half the drop (there's a radiator below it, which is annoyingly off-centre).

DH says we should buy one long set of curtains and one short set of curtains.

I say we should buy two full-length sets of curtains so that the room is symmetrical.

I don't often have very strong feelings about soft furnishings but the thought of one short set of curtains beside a long set fills me with horror! Symmetry, surely . . . ?!

But you'll have to tuck the curtains behind the radiator or otherwise waste all the heat?
What about a blind for the shorter window?

HotChoc10 · 19/01/2019 21:00

Your Idea sounds much better. Even if there was just the one smaller window I like the look of floor length curtains more anyway!

anothermansmother · 19/01/2019 21:00

Definitely two full length sets. You can always shorten on set later which you won't need to because your right but can't lengthen a short set, which would look really odd

RedHelenB · 19/01/2019 21:01

I agree with dh. I've curtains in one window and a blind in another in my bedroom.

CantWaitToRetire · 19/01/2019 21:01

I agree it will affect symmetry to have one long and one short set, but if you have two long then the window set will cover the radiator and the heat will not circulate in the room.

MatildaTheCat · 19/01/2019 21:01

Can you mover the radiator? I would definitely want two long sets.

brizzledrizzle · 19/01/2019 21:01

One long and one short, it will look fine and you won't be sending all the heat out of the window. We have a Juliet balcony and have long and short.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 19/01/2019 21:02

I agree with your dh

dellacucina · 19/01/2019 21:03

Another vote for two sets of long curtains and moving the radiator

Hassled · 19/01/2019 21:03

Well on the one hand you're right - symmetry rules and all - but what about that radiator? You can't have the curtains dropping over the radiator. I really don't know - but I suspect unless this bothers you enough to warrant moving the radiator, which is what I'd do but is probably quite mad, then your DH is right.

BirdieInTheHand · 19/01/2019 21:03

Long curtains on both, but also a blind on the window so that you don't have to actually close the curtains and cover the radiator

Trumponerous · 19/01/2019 21:05

What Birdie suggests.

Moondancer73 · 19/01/2019 21:05

I'd go for long on both. I have long that cover my radiator. To be honest when the curtains are pulled the heating isn't really on - I only put it on once I get up anyway so that's not an issue and I usually only pull them at bedtime - my oh is too lazy to even think about it if he goes upstairs

Shoppingwithmother · 19/01/2019 21:05

One long one short

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 19/01/2019 21:06

I was going to say two long sets, but then read pp comment re. tucking the long ones behind/around the radiator. Could you have two-layered sets? A pair of 'proper' floorlength curtains on both windows, and different lengths of interior curtains? Then the window with the radiator could have shorter interior curtains that don't cover the radiator and you could just leave the exterior curtains open to match the door curtains.

Does that make sense??!! Confused

(Can you tell my mum is an interior designer?!Grin)

InSightMars · 19/01/2019 21:08

When they’re open you’re going to see window over radiator framed by curtain, the radiator doesn’t need a curtain, it’ll look weird. Long/short or a coordinating blind on team DH.

3boysandabump · 19/01/2019 21:09

I would have 2 long sets and tuck them behind the radiator when they're closed. I tuck my bedroom curtains behind my radiator everyday because we'd just bought them then moved hide and didn't want to shell out for new curtains.

RedPandaFluff · 19/01/2019 21:13

It's a really warm room so we're not worried about losing heat when we close the curtains.

Does that help swing more people to my way of thinking? 😄

@AnotherRoadsideAttraction I would love to see the pained look on DH's face if I suggested two pairs of curtains on each window! I'm off to Pinterest to see how that could look, thank you.

If the radiator is off-centre as well, definitely both long! Always symmetry for me, don't have any heating in my bedroom though so wouldn't worry about losing the heat.

Sitranced · 19/01/2019 21:27

Long curtains on the door and a blind on the window. Long curtains would loose all the heat from the radiator. Better to not match at all rather than same curtains at different lengths.

Pinkprincess1978 · 19/01/2019 21:28

I'm with your DH. Our living room has a Juliet balcony and then a short double window. We have our sofa under the shorter window so other long curtains are not practical but even if they were I wouldn't have gone for two long sets.

Justgivemesomepeace · 19/01/2019 21:30

2 long sets with a blind on one window. They will always be symmetrical and you wont have the heating on half the year anyway. I couldnt put up with wonky curtains when the radiator wasnt on.

QuiltingFlower · 19/01/2019 21:30

Long curtains at the door and Roman blind in same fabric on the short window,

Maelstrop · 19/01/2019 21:32

If the windows aren’t on the same wall, which they probably aren’t, we have two in the bedroom also, then different lengths makes no odds. Team DH, one short, one long.

RedPandaFluff · 19/01/2019 21:36

They are on the same wall, @Maelstrop - I agree, different walls and different length curtains wouldn't look quite so wonky.

I think two long sets of curtains plus a blind on the short window is the way forward. Going to put this to DH now . . . thanks for the opinions everyone!
