. . . to put my foot down about the curtains?

Not really an AIBU but I need votes 😄 Our new bedroom has two 'windows' - one is a set of double doors (like patio doors) with a Juliet balcony and the other window is the same width but only half the drop (there's a radiator below it, which is annoyingly off-centre).

DH says we should buy one long set of curtains and one short set of curtains.

I say we should buy two full-length sets of curtains so that the room is symmetrical.

I don't often have very strong feelings about soft furnishings but the thought of one short set of curtains beside a long set fills me with horror! Symmetry, surely . . . ?!

Definitely two long -I hate short curtains on any window - I think they look wrong

tanstaafl · 19/01/2019 21:41

Long? short? Symmetry?
what is this nonsense?

I think you two need to pull yourselves together.

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/01/2019 21:42

Two long sets of the lack of symmetry would drive me mad and it will hide the off-centre radiator. As they are on the same wall make sure that you don't pick curtains that have patterns that mean if the top of the curtains have a different part of the pattern on being unmatched is not an issue. I hope that made sense!!

We have this, I never knew it had a fancy name like a Juliette balcony!! It's called the stupid fucking elderado balcony in our house, I absolutely hate it! It hasn't been open since 2008. Maybe if I start calling it the Juliette balcony I'll warm to it Hmm

Anyway, we had this argument when we moved in, I was you, dh was your dh, my dh won in our house, I think aesthetically I agree with you but practically I think your dh is right

SharpLily · 19/01/2019 21:45

I hate seeing short curtains in any situation - I didn't think people used them anymore! Definitely both long and if you really need to be able to block out light without closing the curtains then add a blind, but please don't ever use short curtains.

CastlesAndGiants · 19/01/2019 21:47

I have similar. Full length curtains and a blind. It looks good.

Fusioluxe · 19/01/2019 21:50

Two long sets
Radiators won’t always be on

Fusioluxe · 19/01/2019 21:51

Short curtains are like a room’s tacky mini skirt.

RedPandaFluff · 19/01/2019 21:57

@tanstaafl and @Fusioluxe 😁

@RedPandaFluff on the same wall, they HAVE to be the same length! Can you make the curtain pole long enough so the curtains aren’t touching the radiator?

Soontobe60 · 19/01/2019 21:59

We have 2 windows on the same wall with a radiator between them. One is narrower than the other, and slightly lower. The radiator was offset so slightly under 1 window but not the other. It drove me mad! We had a new radiator fitted and I made sure the plumber had it centred before he plumbed it in. I now have wide wooden Venetian blinds and floor length curtains on the windows. Disguises the narrowness of one window, and when they are closed the heights don't show either. Result! I can now sleep well .

I’d get shutters on the small window and long curtains on the doors.

FoxyBoxter · 19/01/2019 23:25

Short curtains are like a room’s tacky mini skirt.

Grin^^ Thank you for explaining why it is I dislike short curtains so much - I've never been able to put it into words but this sums it up so perfectly!!! 🤣

Defo long curtains - sod the radiator.

RedPandaFluff · 20/01/2019 08:49

Two long sets and a blind it is!

Now, patterned or plain carpet on the stairs . . . ? Kidding 😁

Oh man!! If heat isn’t even an issue then clearly it’s two long sets. Obviously.
Send your dh over to me if he refuses to back down Grin
