To ask how many hours you work?

I have just started my own business and currently have enough clients to give me around 15 hours of work a week. DH works full time and come home at 7pm every evening. I do everything around the house, everything for our 3 children, but now don't know how many hours I should be working? I am gradually getting more and more clients but not sure how many hours would be the optimum when combining work with my other responsibilities?

Will be doing 30 a week after I return to work after mat leave. Dp can do anything up to 60 hours a week self employed

SadieSue29 · 19/01/2019 20:39

I work 37 hour officially but it's more like 45 in the office then a few hours every night once my son is in bed. My OH works away Monday to Friday and does 12 hour days whilst he's away. No cleaner, but house is generally tidy and clean.

Social worker and engineer.

mistermagpie · 19/01/2019 21:01

I work 24, DH works 33. We have children aged 1 and three and if we worked anymore the nursery fees would cripple us.

Littlecaf · 19/01/2019 21:12

25 hrs a week for me & 45 for DP. 2 DCs in preschool/nursery and an expensive commute means I break even each month after bills. We have a cleaner every other week. I’ll go back to full time when they are both at school.

BitchQueen90 · 19/01/2019 21:14

I work 20 hours. I'm a single parent so everything at home - housework, cooking, childcare is done by me. DS is school age.

I work 20 hours over 4 days including some evenings and weekends, DH average 40-45 over 4 days, but I have a DC with severe anxiety who I am currently home educating as well, plus he has lots of appointments so my time at home is not all my own. I do all housework, cooking etc.

Asdf12345 · 19/01/2019 21:39

My main job has a Rota that works out at 47.5 hours a week, but we very rarely get out on time, take work home, go in days off, and then there are occasional bits of other work.

The better half in theory works 35 a week from home but once you include the travelling when working away (two days a fortnight) I reckon it must be closer to 50.

starabara · 19/01/2019 21:40

Avg 60-70 hours a week for me, Husband does 20 a week outside the home.

We live on a small holding though, have livestock and a young DC who has just started primary school.

EnolaAlone · 19/01/2019 21:42

I work 27 hours Mon-Fri to fit in between the school run. DH works around 65 hours a week and his job tends to be all pervasive so I don't feel I could comfortably work more hours at the moment.

itbemay · 19/01/2019 21:45

35 in one job
6 in another
7.5 at university
Plus 2 teenagers

I'm knackered!!

Findingdotty · 19/01/2019 21:46

Surely it depends on what you need to earn? I work between 25-42 hrs a week and DH works 30 hrs a week (would work more if employers let him). 3DC and life is crazy. I wouldn't work more than I needed to so I would base my decision on this.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/01/2019 21:49

I do about 28 hours, dh does about 45, I tend to do all the housework. We share the cooking.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/01/2019 21:51

I should say, I also do voluntary work on top.

BackforGood · 19/01/2019 21:52

There is no 'should' about it
Depends what you earn - and then, how much that contributes to what your household budget needs (or wants?)
Depends how much you enjoy what you do
Depends how much flexibility you have around the time of day you have to do your work
Depends how 'constant' your work is - or if you have to take the work when it is there, as there will be lean times.
Depends your ambition - how much you prefer to be working, rather than not
Depends on the long term security of your dh's job, and, indeed, how much he enjoys what he does
Depens a bit on the age of your dc too

I, personally prefer working at my paid employment to doing stuff like housework, gardening, decorating, etc, so, if I could earn enough to make it worthwhile, I'd pay for someone else to do those things whilst spending my time doing my paid work.

PerfectlyPetty · 19/01/2019 21:54

32 hours over 4 days. Dh does 40 hours over 4 days.

We have the weekend off together and different weekdays so we’re only both in work for 3 days a week.

I’ve done the very occasional 60 hour week (out of choice, paid overtime) and it’s miserable. I don’t know how people do it constantly,

Longdistance · 19/01/2019 22:03

35 hours a week, term time only.

I do the majority of childcare. If there is an inset day for me and dds arent in school, dh will take the day off/work from home.

Dh cooks about once a week, I do dds and mine laundry (as dh does rugby), he runs the hoover around, and dds do washing up.

There no should really.

datingloon · 19/01/2019 22:06

28-35 involves evenings till around midnight, pub work and I'm single parent to 4, but I love my job and it means him home for that but after school and gives me a bit of a life and adult company

SittHakim · 19/01/2019 22:15

I do 50 hours a week plus commute, plus occasionally being called in for emergencies, but DH works very part-time from home and picks up all the domestic slack, which means it all works out OK with primary-age DD. If you're going to continue doing everything with the house and three kids, and you want a bit of free time as well, I'd have thought about 20 hours a week was the maximum you could fit in.

Rodenhide · 19/01/2019 22:18

I'll do anywhere between 45 and 60 (rare) hours a week. DP currently home with DC. Once they're in nursery, he'll probably go back to his own 40 hours.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 19/01/2019 22:18

Pre my DD about 50 hours a week (sometimes lots more). I’m on maternity leave now but when I go back I’m going to be reduce my hours or at the very least work from home 1-2 days a week

speakout · 19/01/2019 22:30

For me it's about balance.

I work around 20 hours a week, youngest is at University, home most weekends, older at home and working, so don't need much looking after. My business ( I work from home) is booming and I could earn three times as much if I worked a 60 hour week but I earn more than I need in 20 hours, I like to have leisure time, go to the gym, walk in the woods, photography etc.
It is about life quality as much as profit.
