To ask how many hours you work?

I have just started my own business and currently have enough clients to give me around 15 hours of work a week. DH works full time and come home at 7pm every evening. I do everything around the house, everything for our 3 children, but now don't know how many hours I should be working? I am gradually getting more and more clients but not sure how many hours would be the optimum when combining work with my other responsibilities?

Probably about 45 - 50 hours

blueskiesandforests · 19/01/2019 19:30

17 hours a week at college (term time only), plus assignments and learning for exams almost weekly, and technically 20 hours at work (year 'round) but it's shifts so there have been weeks when I've done 60 hours, but also weeks when I've done nothing, and still been paid the same - it has to balance out over the entire year.

Also have 3 children, 1 primary, 2 secondary.

Also do most things around the house, not everything and kids also pull their weight.

DH does 40 hours technically but is in an odd situation which means its 35 hours in the office and 5 hours he has to find to log from home without a project to work on...

So IMO I do more. He earns more, typically (I took almost 10 years out with the kids, though I always taught a few hours of evening classes and only had a year or so of no income at all when DH used to work away a lot).

37 hours plus assignments and study is far too much in many ways, especially as it sometimes works out as a lot more work hours - my free time is often when the kids aren't free and I'm a terrible procrastinator with my study, which is my own fault...

I hope when I qualify both DH and I will do 30-35 hours.

Work to live not live to work, although we both enjoy our jobs.

How much is enough and how much is too much is a how long is a piece of string question, but I don't think either parent should do much over 45 hours p/w regularly with kids personally, being a workaholic is self indulgent on the part of either parent unless it's essential to put a roof over their heads and food on the table.

Smoggle · 19/01/2019 19:47

KatharinaRosalie · 19/01/2019 19:49

Full time, with quite a bit of work travel (mostly in Europe, sometimes long distance). DC 3 and 5. DH does his fair share at home though. Oh an evening job too but that's just a few hours per week.

Drogosnextwife · 19/01/2019 19:51

50 hours a week, no breaks.

Drogosnextwife · 19/01/2019 19:54

I also do all the childcare for our kids and 98% of the housework.

cinemalover · 19/01/2019 19:55

Just got a new job whilst studying: mine is 23hrs one week and 35hrs the second.

I'm going to end up studying all day on my days off too as I'm starting uni in September.

Sleep is my favourite part of life atm.Grin

MirandaWest · 19/01/2019 19:57

I work 37.5 hours a week and some more at weekends sometimes. I work from home which means I’m around generally more. DH also works 37.5 hours but has an hour long lunch (mine is 30 min) and he has a 30 min commute.

SuziQ10 · 19/01/2019 19:58

20h a week. And look after my dc the rest of the time.
DH works full time.

tinytreefrog · 19/01/2019 19:59

Me: 37.5 usually Monday to Friday (Occasional weekend).
DP 45 Monday to Friday, but far longer commute than me, so out of the house much longer, meaning I do most of the running around after teen and tween DC.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/01/2019 20:00

I do 24 in 3 evening or night shifts, DP works approx 39.
Get a cleaner and expand if you can.

Dobbyhasnomaster · 19/01/2019 20:02

Contracted to 37.5, usually ends up 45-50 depending on how busy we are

BigChocFrenzy · 19/01/2019 20:07

35 hours
That counts as full time in Germany

  • I work for a big tech firm in Germany

Great flexibility about which hours I choose on any day
No unpaid overtime or presenteeism at all

I commute 8 km by bicycle along safe easy bike lanes

TheHobbitMum · 19/01/2019 20:08

I work upto 50hrs a week. And DH works 37.5

TrashPanda · 19/01/2019 20:08

I do 56 hours a fortnight, including every other Saturday. 3 kids 9, 3 and 1, young ones in nursery for school hours. I do all school and nursery runs. DP is out of the house 11 hours a day M-F.

Crimson72 · 19/01/2019 20:08

Around 45-50 hours a week but I don’t have DC

Crimson72 · 19/01/2019 20:09

Oh, and all housework and cooking on top of that! I’m tired...

museumum · 19/01/2019 20:15

I do about 30. I do morning school runs and pick up at 5pm most days take Friday afternoons off (school here finishes at midday Fridays).

Buddytheelf85 · 19/01/2019 20:20

Around 45, plus commute.

pinkmagic1 · 19/01/2019 20:21

31 per week, have two teenagers and I do 98% of the house work. DH works 50 plus per week.

Sarahandduck18 · 19/01/2019 20:31

35 on a good week 50+ on a bad one

TrackerBar · 19/01/2019 20:33

21 hours a week, but I’m considering getting a second job as I can’t do any more hours where I am. It’s just me and the two ds’s aged 12 and 13.

n0ne · 19/01/2019 20:34

I work 32 hours, DH the same. It's too much - even with a cleaner 3 hours once a week the house is a shit-tip, we end up getting takeaway at least once a week, and we never get round to admin or DIY, let alone taking the kids (5 and 1.5) to after-school activities. I hate it.
