to find The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005 film) horribly disappointing?

Whole family is feeling tired and under the weather so we have ditched swimming this afternoon in favour of duvets on the sofa and a film.

Staggeringly bad special effects, awful green screen and weird lighting. No sparkly magic snow. It just looks and feels wrong!

I quite liked Lucy but the other actors were pretty poor.

Nothing will ever beat the BBC version for me.

SerenDippitty · 19/01/2019 15:06

YANBU. Didn’t like it. Prince Caspian even worse, voyage of the Dawn Treader not bad.

I watched the bbc series as a child. It was awesome! This looks like it's been made by film students. DCS are enjoying it though and they are quiet which is good!

Agreed, the BBC TV version, despite the bad superimposed effects, is the best version. I have it on DVD, specifically to show at school instead of the newer film.

Ooh I need to buy that! Did you order it online?

Is that Big Suze from Peep Show at the end?

Ohh I can’t stand the bbc series, the Lucy in that one is really simpering

UrsulaPandress · 19/01/2019 15:28

I prefer the book. Nothing competes with my imagination

RedForShort · 19/01/2019 15:37

13 years of progress in technology have probably made it look naffer.

The TV series was amazing though - there were some fantastic children's adaption back in my day I tell you.

confusedandemployed · 19/01/2019 15:38

The original BBC animated film with Sheila Hancock as the White Queen. Best version hands down, with beautiful music.

JacquesHammer · 19/01/2019 15:38

The BBC version was excellent bar Lucy.

The film wasn’t great but I really loved Lucy.

If only the obvious were possible Grin

Strokethefurrywall · 19/01/2019 16:30

I love the film version, I barely remember the BBC adaptation.

The kids went through a phase of watching it repeatedly and it was probably the first non-animation movie they sat through (other than Home Alone!)

My favorite scene was the fight charge. I know it's CGI, but I thought it was good!

Babdoc · 19/01/2019 16:40

The film version was rather too Disneyfied for my liking, although Aslan was quite well done.
But as a PP said, you can’t beat the book. I read it when I was seven, and was in floods of tears at the death of Aslan, long before I knew it was a Christian crucifixion allegory.
I’d heartily recommend the other books in the series, with the original illustrations, particularly the Magician’s Nephew, and the Silver Chair, both fabulous.

Confused is spot on. This is the most incredible version made. Sadly hard to find and never ever shown on TV though:

CloserIAm2Fine · 19/01/2019 17:22

I love the BBC version and that is the only Aslan for me! His voice is perfect and the puppet is brilliant considering it was 30 years ago. And the White Witch was scary as a child. The animation within live action just made it seem more magical imo, and was probably the best option considering visual effects at the time!

GooodMythicalMorning · 19/01/2019 17:27

bbc version for me. was so disappointed with the newer ones.

LittleScottieDog · 19/01/2019 18:00

I can't remember where I got the DVD from, it was some years ago now. I'm sure you can buy it online though.

Witchend · 19/01/2019 18:26

BBC version was truer to the book, but... oh dear! The beaver costumes (I saw a monster film a few years later that I suspected they'd recycled those costumes with very few changes) and Aslan was almost pantomime.
The Lucy was just not right. I saw an interview with her where she said she didn't like Lucy as she was silly and (may have been bad direction) that was how she played her.

I liked the newer version. Not quite as true to the book, but on the whole the changes were well thought out. Would have liked to see more after Aslan returned, but generally well done.

Pity it went off after that, both Prince Caspian and Voyage really missed the mark in both a s a film and the spirit of the book.

Silver Chair was the best BBC one imo. Tom Baker as Puddleglum was excellent.

AnotherPidgey · 19/01/2019 18:27

I've bought the BBC versions from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to The Silver Chair on DVD in the last year. DS who was then 7 as I was when they came out, absolutely loved them. The graphics have aged well in an antiquated way; in a slick CGI world, they are very distinctive and have character.

Disney did little for me. Too much WW2 at the start, felt rushed, good battle. As for Prince Caspian, I think someone left the books at home when the screenplay and scripts were written. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was better. A bit rearranged, but kept to the spirit of the text better.

AnotherPidgey · 19/01/2019 18:29

The amimated one reminds me of soggy lunchtimes in the school hall in the mid-80s. It was Narnia or Looney Tunes.

The joy of the TV/ video trolley Grin

SerenDippitty · 19/01/2019 18:33

As for Prince Caspian, I think someone left the books at home when the screenplay and scripts were written.

Agreed - Caspian’s ridiculous accent (which was dropped for Voyage) and the thing with Susan, yuck.

Babdoc · 19/01/2019 18:48

I’m sure there was a black and white version of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on tv back in the 1960’s when I was a kid. I remember that Jadis the White Witch was chillingly evil, much more alluring and almost erotic in a way that was really appropriate to a personification of the devil and showed how sin can be horribly tempting. The film version was just one dimensional and repellent, as a standard villain.

DippyAvocado · 19/01/2019 19:02

I quite like the film, although the animated version is my favourite DC turned their noses up at that though. All the child actors gave good performances I thought. Caspian was rubbish.

notsurewhatshappening · 19/01/2019 19:57

I never knew an animated one existed!

I'd also love to get hold of The Borrowers which was shown on bbc on Sundays at teatime in the 90s. Very fond memories of watching it at my granny's house.
