Notmorewashing · 19/01/2019 12:19

Is it possible with 2k max deposit and under 200£ a month payments ?
To take 3 kids in.

Definitely possible to get something within that budget.

We have a small SUV for around £200pm and paid no deposit.

prettypossums · 19/01/2019 12:26

Why not just buy a second hand car for £2k?

todayiwin · 19/01/2019 12:35

@elvis86 can you possibly say what that deal is? Which car and with who? Thank you - my next step is to lease

@prettypossums because a 2k car would need taxing, servicing, MOT, breakdown cover etc it wouldn't be just 2k, leasing personally gives me peace of mind and a brand new car every 2-3years. Who wants to own a car? They just decrease in value and end up robbing you monthly!

prettypossums · 19/01/2019 12:44

A brand new car every 2-3 years... no wonder the future is going to hell in a handcart

Notmorewashing · 19/01/2019 13:14

Cannot afford a second hand car because inevitably things go wrong eg cam belt.

In your shoes £2k deposit and hp agreement. Then the car will be yours outright. I buy a one to two year old car every 9 or 10 years. Last one in 2011 cost £13,500. Worth about £3k for p ex. now and no obligation to spend on minor scratches Therefore my cars cost about £1k pa capital and no more than £750 pa tax, ins and maint. Therefore over ten years £6500 cheaper than what you are proposing. Reliable mid range mpv.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 19/01/2019 13:24

Love my car

But its getting old and i might look at leasing until the car i really want is a bit cheaper

Ive no advice...just gonna lurk Grin

user139328237 · 19/01/2019 13:43

Leasing only really adds up financially if your milage is so low that an unreliable car wouldn't be the end of the world as most leases only allow about 8000 miles which works out as about 20 miles a day.

adaline · 19/01/2019 13:48

Leasing is a mugs game.

My car is sixteen years old and hasn't cost me anywhere near £200 a month in maintenance and I drive 250 miles a week in it.

If you can afford 2k and £200 going forward, why not spend the 2k on a car and save £200 a month towards costs?

Sweetpotatoaddict · 19/01/2019 13:49

Bought a large car in 2008 for £6000 1.5 yrs old with 18000 on the clock. It’s still going strong 11 years later. It’s cost buttons over the years, no lease will ever be as cheap as that. Environmentally it’s a much better bet too. Although I need folk to spend on leases so we can buy them 2nd hand.

Craft1905 · 19/01/2019 13:53

Leasing is a mugs game.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. It's like anything, it can be good or bad depending on the person's individual circumstances and their requirements. The right lease deal, in the right circumstances, can be much cheaper than buying outright or getting a loan to buy outright.

But it's not for everybody.

Yearinyearout · 19/01/2019 13:54

It depends on your mileage. I pay just under £200 a month for a small car (£500 deposit) but I don’t do many miles, my limit is 6k per year. That includes a service plan.

adaline · 19/01/2019 13:54

How is paying £200+ a month for at least 2-3 years ever going to be cheaper than just spending £1500 outright and scrapping the car when it eventually dies?

Notmorewashing · 19/01/2019 13:56

I can’t save £200 for repairs as it’s unreliable atleast with lease car + maintenance everything is covered.

Lots of second hand cars go bang soon after purchase.

OP posts:
elvis86 · 19/01/2019 13:56

Maybe I've been unlucky, but having bought 3 second-hand cars with personal loans (costing circa £200 a month), and having needed to replace each one shortly after the loan was paid off anyway, I'm happy paying £200 a month indefinitely for a brand new car. It's easier for me to have predictable (if slightly higher) motoring costs, and no risk of an unexpected repair bill.

Horses for courses - what suits some people won't suit others.

Chembe · 19/01/2019 13:57

I pay £168 currently for a corsa 8k miles per year (includes service and maintenance). This is just finishing and we are going now for a seat Arona £216 a month 8k miles including service and maintenance. No deposit on either. They are each 3 year contracts.

elvis86 · 19/01/2019 14:00

Sorry OP - we have a Peugeot 2008. Went into it knowing roughly the kind of thing we wanted, but didn't set our hearts on any particular model and were able to find a deal that way.

adaline · 19/01/2019 14:02

You need to do your research and go to a good, reputable local garage. DP got his old car second hand and it lasted nine years before repairing it wasn't worth the costs.

Mine is sixteen years old and I've only had to pay for new tyres and a brake pad in that time.

You also need to consider that 8,000 miles a year is really not much. I do that in six months just commuting to/from work and the shops!

Craft1905 · 19/01/2019 14:11

How is paying £200+ a month for at least 2-3 years ever going to be cheaper than just spending £1500 outright and scrapping the car when it eventually dies?

Because a £1500 car might die a couple of months after you've bought it. Then you've paid £750/month for 2 months motoring, which, if my maths is right, is higher than £200/month. Even if it doesn't die, it might need expensive repairs. Plus you need to tax a £1500 car when you buy it. A lease car comes taxed. Plus insurance is often higher on older cars, with less safety features.

Or you might be getting the car with a car allowance from your employer, who may insist the car is new or under a year old. There's no end of reasons why a lease car might be the best option for some people. And might be hopeless for others.

KittyMcTitty · 19/01/2019 14:14

Suzuki vitara £600 deposit and £211 a month which includes the servicing for 3 years - it’s a hp - so will have no equity at the end. We are on 8000 miles a year so more deposit more miles!
Has sat nav and a camera and we bloody love it. Will take a new one after.

KittyMcTitty · 19/01/2019 14:15

Plus a lease car looks nice and is a pleasure to drive! Cars can be enjoyed as well as practical!!

Notmorewashing · 19/01/2019 14:16

Which websites are people using? I’ve been recommended the nationwide vehicle contracts one

Here come the anti leasing brigade Hmm different things work for different people, get over it!

We got a Skoda Yeti for £192 a month with no deposit, but this was a good deal because that model was being discontinued.

You should get something that suits you for your budget OP, check out HUKD and search “car lease” as they usually post links to good deals.

19lottie82 · 19/01/2019 14:18

PS we used yes lease
